my fiancé spent about 15 years of his life playing live, touring + playing festivals, often overseas from the US where language barriers can arise, so I showed him this video. He said that tech issues can be incredibly embarrassing/ frustrating for the musician, but abusing a staff member in front of an audience is NEVER the right move. He said for artists of this caliber, most issues are worked out before a show + many productions even have gestures, or words they can say really quick in between verses or songs so the sound crew knows what they need. Fiancé wondered if MGK missed his own sound check lol or maybe a string broke or something (which true musicians could play through or quickly grab another guitar). MGK just looks like an asshole diva.

I've played in gigging bands for the past decade, and there's almost always SOME sort of issue. Lots of bands don't have the luxury of affording their own techs, so we have to handle everything onstage ourselves as the song is playing lol. I've had guitars cutting out, cable issues on boards, monitor problems, you name it. If he can't improvise when shit goes sideways, maybe MGK isn't cut out for live performing.

From what I’ve seen from different angles of the video, he asked the crew guy for a new guitar since the one he performed with was out of tune and the crew member either refused or just didn’t hear him, then they tried cutting him off early during that song, which to him is a very personal and emotional song since it’s both for his wife and for his unborn child which he lost to a miscarriage, so I can understand the frustration but I feel there are better ways to handle it

I Worked his show a week after, everything seemed fine and he was extra nice to everyone.. fans, thanking the local crew, lol. The roadie crew did mention they are getting no sleep on this tour and the schedule was horrible. At our venue We started work at 4 am and ended at 2 am the next day, so everyone not doing blow on that crew is exausted. As a guitar player and a daughter of a guitar player i can tell you some types of Guitars really resist staying in tune if they arent set up perfectly, and it will piss u off if yr trying to play in front of people. Changes in temp and Humidity can fuck with how yr guitar stays in tune. Guitars are fussy. My dad has smashed guitars on stage because of that reason and he didnt even have a guitar technician to get pissed at. Its still pretty unprofessional and childish.. but have you met many musicians? Well, I *have* been a tech at MSG 3x … backline techs are core members of the group typically… it’s possible he was new, but more than likely the artist was being a prick. Many of them don’t have the vocabulary or musical knowledge to voice what’s wrong which can easily lead to frustration. Something will ALWAYS go wrong every week. You get paid to fix it quickly. They had been messing things up all night, and on the last song, they didn't bring him his guitar and he spent the entire last song looking for and asking for his guitar and it never came. There are videos everywhere with the entire footage and from different angles that confirm their story. Plus I saw him live twice just last month, and at both shows, they ended it with 4 guitarist on stage playing the last part together. You can see there are only 3 and he is missing his.

The interview I saw with him recently was sad. He becomes obsessive about certain things, like after his #1 album, that was all he thought about and spent his time on, seemingly to the point of neglecting some of the most important people in his life. He was basically miserable. I know it's not easy...pressure from all sides, etc. But it's NEVER going to be enough if YOU'RE not enough to begin with...for yourself. He's worked hard to get here, but it isn't the most important thing in the world...fame and/or wealth, I mean. As a FOH engineer for several years and monitor mixer , I can say the only console that close to the stage is the monitor mixer, and side wash PA engineer, I would bet it was feed back in the ear monitors or they were to hot, or the wrong mic feed is being patched back, , I saw him tap his ear monitors several times minutes before this, indicating it's hot, ( to loud or feeding back) a dead ear monitor is usually just yanked out and left dangling then put back in on the next song, , so it's safe to say it was an issue of him not being able to hear himself, and is confirmed by the guitar issue that I bet he could not hear either, or it was so loud it was unbearable, .feedback is awful to deal with for performing artist, , if you look closely you can see some of the others performing on stage were looking lost like what's going on, .so I would even suggest the in ear monitor engineer had his targets mixed up. I recall an issue where a monitor tech left the talk back feed on, so any chatter amoung crew is fed to the stage in ear monitors , I have also seen sound crews mix up the ear monitors, next thing you know the drummer has a guitar in his and the singer has the drums ect, I bet this issue was there from the start, and patience had run out. and some of these sound crew engineers can be egotistical pricks, some of them actually do need a butt whooping ( de tuned) before they humble up and change what they are doing, .. I recall another incident with a national act ( Marshel Tucker Band) where monitor tech was just nit paying attention, he was locked into some conversation with a groupie chick, and the drummer had to throw sticks at him to get his attention, I have also seen these guys get hammered ( wasted) and fail miserably at doing their job I have seen issues where hired union sound crew ( depending on where he was performing at) have actually mixed up the monitors

None of that matters. Don't make excuses for a "man" in his thirties behaving a small child throwing a temper tantrum. There were MUCH better and more professional ways to handle this. All these people making excuses for him like he's a child that hasn't learned impulse control or conflict resolution. I understand he was angry, and I don't blame him. His anger and frustration were both very much justified, but that DOES NOT excuse our justify his poor and shitty response which was very much NOT justifiable. He's supposed to be a grown-up and a professional; he needs to act like it. Making excuses for such behavior only encourages it to continue. He owes this tech an apology; a REAL one. It doesn't even need to be done publicly; it just needs to be done. Period. And, no, I'm not just shitting on him because he's MGK. I honestly actually like some of his music, and I don't believe that as a person he's just all bad with no good or redeemable qualities. You have to admit though that his behavior here was not a good look for him, and it would be that way regardless of who did. There is NOTHING in this incident that gives me any reason to respect him. Even if this was someone that I absolutely LOVED (Metallica, Ozzy, Rammstein, Jelly Roll, Reba McEntire) I would still be feeling the same and saying everything about them that I've said about MGK here.
