I really wish Machine Head would get a better drummer. This guy, Matt Alston, who was selected to replace Dave McClain, in 2019, just ain't cuttin' it. He doesn't suck, but he's nowhere NEAR the caliber of drummer, that McClain is. I think the band knows they made the wrong choice, too. Because even though Alston has "officially" been Machine Head's drummer, for 3 years, they didn't even use him on the album they put out, last year (Of Kingdom And Crown)! They hired Navene Koperweis, of Animals As Leaders and Whitechapel to drum, on the album. That says an awful lot, to me, about Machine Head's belief, in Matt Alston.

I though Matt Alston was incredible across their set in Milwaukee. Right in the pocket sonically, holding everything together perfectly. How that translates across to the way the band write and record into the future appreciating the distance between the Bay Area and UK is a fair question. That said, I have been fortunate to be able to enjoy Machine Head live numerous times over the years starting in 1995 (with Walter Ryan on drums) through to Milwaukee being the most recent. MMF was the first time the drums captured so much of my attention...which for me speaks volumes for the positive impact Matt creates for the band.

It’s my understanding that the recording situation was because of the pandemic and I’ve seen them a few times since he joined and live he’s on point.. I’m interested in hearing him on record before I make a judgement.

I also saw them this past year in my hometown, and the venue itself maybe had a capacity of about 300 people, and Matt killed it. He's been around and, at one point was Ill Niños drum tech. I follow his channel as well, and he's solid. The last album was due to covid restrictions and distance.
