A few weeks ago, I made a video about how I sew my handwoven dishtowels. During that video, I made the confession that I'm not really good at sewing. After that, I received a lot of feedback and tips to help improve my sewing skills. With today's video, I will be trying those tips as I'm machine hemming some other dishtowels. I feel like I did a much better job this time! #sewing #weaving #handwoven

THE YARN
The dishtowels showed during this video were woven with 8/2 cotton from Maurice Brassard. I used four different colors. If you are in the US, they are all available through The Woolery's website here : woolery.com/ma...
Here are the exact color names of the yarn I used:
-Naturel (LEC-Y100)
-Sapin (light green) (LEC-Y5536)
-Plum (purple) (LEC-Y1732)
-Teal (LEC-Y5068)
During the video, I also mention that for my next project, I will be using Lion Brand's yarn from their Truboo collection. The yarn is actually made of 100% rayon from Bamboo. I used 3 different colors:
1 ball of Mauve (purple)
1 ball of Silver (light grey)
-3 balls of Slate (dark grey)

I love Mrs. Bernina. I also have one, although mine is only 34 years old. They are true gems.

For lining up your stripes you can also wait to take out your pin until just before it comes under the needle.

I also have an old Bernina and love it. YES you can get a walking foot for it.The walking foot will keep the fabric from shifting and everything will line up. It will be a special order and I went through my local Bernina dealer. I felt like it was expensive BUT the results have been priceless.

Hi, I think instead of your sewing gauge, you'll have much more luck with the Clover hot ruler. You fold the material over and iron directly on it. Wonder Clips will be significantly more fun to work with than pins. Trust me on this one. LOL. If you can't find a walking foot for your machine (highly recommend) you can try Wonder Tape (washes out, lightly sticky) or Hem Tape (use instead of hemming or just to hold it in place while you hem.) The hem tape won't let anything move and your stripes will stay lined up during sewing. Also you could try tacking down the stripes with a few stitches, then going back to sew the whole seam. If we were in the same city, I'd hem your towels for you if you'd teach me weaving. :)

Depending on how bulky the seams are, sewing wonder clips are also useful

Pin the seam lines first. Until you get the walking foot, use lots of pins to stop the fabric from moving. Your towels are beautiful! Thanks for sharing. God bless.

I was thinking more about this, and you might have more luck with a Microtex or Superior Topstitch 90/14 needle. Also a bigger stitch length, 3.0, would be better in this situation.

Awesome! Thank you for the tips 😁 what difference do those needles have? Are they bigger? 😊

The gauge # is bigger but the needle is smaller. They are also sharper than Universal needles. The 90/14 size is perfect for quilting, going through all 3 layers of a quilt cleanly.

Bravo. Great progress on yr sewing. Until you find a walking foot to help with pattern alignment, try to be mindful while sewing to push the fabric through from the front rather than pulling from the back. Of course use yr left hand to keep the back fabric straight and going through straight, but work on using yr right hand fingertips to push the top layer through. Very well done.
