Machine Shop INSPECTS My FORGED $300 M50 ENGINE. IS IT USABLE?!

I brought the block and pistons to the machine shop and they used a micrometer to measure the pistons and a bore gauge to measure the bore of the engine! We find out if the block is savable or not.

Run the proper gasket. Don't cheap out using spacers. You can get away with that at low power and stress levels, but with the amount of power you're gonna make with a boosted S52, you're just adding another failure point to the equation and God knows BMWs don't need anymore reason to break 🤣

Machine/replace the pistons and run just a cutring gasket without a spacer Decompression plates on High compression engines is a bodge fix for low boost/power builds and not the correct way to do it

Use that motor that’s overboard which is s52 clone minus the throw on the crank you can use 86.5 or 87mm cut ring on ur block if the bore is greater than 86mm. I’d go 160-180 thickness for cut ring to get you some drop in compression if you like

Keep the 10.8:1 comp factory is 10.5:1 use cut ring no spacer and use pump gas for 12-18psi set up and e85 for for the rest. Keep in mind high compression makes good power even FI those pistons are more durable than factory cast pistons to begin with regardless of the compression your using if your tuner is comfortable with it. I did 9:1 JE custom pistons on my s50 with eagle rods flex fuel motor i’d say it’s good for 800whp full e85 currently running 18psi-30psi max haven’t put it on dyno yet but should be competing at ///MPact next month

That's what I would do, maybe even lower on pump but he's always driving on E anyways, with E85 and forged pistons high compression really isn't dangerous. I've seen some people do like 11.5 compression on E85, he only has 10.8 and even with just the cutring by itself it's gonna be like 10.5 because the cut ring is thicker than oem gasket.

Me and my friend, and pretty much everyone I know in Sweden who runs M50 turbos use the "Athena cooperring gasket" and it holds boost very well and seals good.(probably the same as the one you have, but rebranded?) My friend runs 782whp and 1053nm in his m50b28. As for rings, I dont see a problem using the same ones if they come from that engine, maybe double check the ring gap while you can. Depending on what type of bearing it is, I would change them if they are cheap kind becuase they dont cost that much(its a peace of mind type of investment).. Also run e85 to reduce risk of detonation, also more power.. My overall best tip is, do it right the first time. That's always gonna be cheapest in the long run. Cheers

I'd have the pistons cleaned up and run em, same with the rods, send the block to the machine shop for a hone, deck and hot tank. Have them mic the crank and give it a polish. Get the rotating assembly balanced, and put in a new set of main and rod bearings and piston rings. Run whatever head gasket thickness to keep it in the 9.5-10.5:1 CR with a factory or close quench. The high CR is fine you'll just make a ton more power on lower boost and the drivability off boost will be better and you'll spool faster. This will also help if you go e85 as the higher compression is more efficient and you'll be able to run less boost to make big numbers, which means less stress/improved reliability/fatigue in the long run

I’d stick with the bottom end that you just got even tho you’re worried about higher compression I’d say that’s what you want. Could use the same turbo or a smaller turbo with a little less boost and still make the same amount of power. Plus the turbo will spool up quick and you won’t get crazy boost lag.

If I learned anything from my bmw builds, it's don't cut corners. Sell what you had/have and get all new rings, bearings, and a proper headgasket after getting the machineshop to resurface the block. You'll have a bulletproof $15-20k worth block for less than $3k. You have peace of mind and if anything goes wrong you'll be able to pinpoint and be covered.

Dremel that copper head spacer to 87mm If you're carefull thats shouldn't be impossible and its freeeee. Copper is very soft should be easy. use cut rings and head gasket that you have. Those bearing are probably used performance bearing or not just check them with some plastic gauge. Using the old pistons rings should be good since you know they didnt score the bore. Compare the ring stiffness between the 2 sets old ring. That forge motor ring are probably better/stiffer.

New bearings and rings, mls head gasket. Hone the block, set the rings up right,you’ll have a $20k motor for 2k. If it goes it should be the gasket, save you a lot of expensive parts. And you’ll know if it goes it wasn’t the mechanics fault rather than guessing if it would have spun a bearing if you had replaced them. Maybe a go fund me for some new bearings and rings. 😁

Just outta curiosity, what’s preventing you from using the 3 liter crank in the M50 block? Also, mill the fuck outta those pistons man, even with the spacer you’ll still probably be hovering around ~10.0:1. Pistons need to get milled if you’re gonna reuse them, no ifs no buts. (For decent boost)
@Sagekable
@Sagekable Жыл бұрын
The piston pin height is spec'd to the crank so he would have to get new pistons to run the s52/b30 crank. Also 10.8:1 is only .3 higher than stock, it will be just fine with a copper spacer especially with much stronger than stock pistons
@inaNis_
@inaNis_ Жыл бұрын
@@Sagekable the issue isn’t whether the pistons are cast or forged. With a higher compression, you will be more knock limited in your tuning. Yes the cast pistons will fail sooner than the forged ones, but it doesn’t mean that all of a sudden they’ll handle tons of detonation or knock. They might resist it a bit more, but at the end of the day you can still melt forged pistons
@Sagekable
@Sagekable Жыл бұрын
@@inaNis_ Yes I understand. This engine with a copper spacer and cutring (.140" of thickness) will end up around 9.2:1 which is a totally reasonable compression ratio for a built engine on pump gas. This thing is going to make like 550whp before it gets near the knock limit on pump 93 and it will make more than that turbo will flow on e85
