Thank you very much! I've watched many of your videos and have learned many techniques from you. You remind me of a wonderful Machine Shop teacher that I had many years ago in high school. In this video, (MACHINE SHOP TIPS #118 Making a Form Profile Lathe Tool) you've allowed me to visualize the process for making a custom cutting blade for my rosette cutter so that I can make MDF rosettes to match the others in my home. I really enjoy your videos and thank you again!

You are an excellent teacher sir. My shop teacher was from Czech and a great machinist but there were some translation difficulties for me. I spend every weekend in his shop for 3-1/2 yrs. At 63 I'm still learning. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!

Coming across your videos late in the game, and decided to take on the form tool to make some of the missing oil plugs for my SB 10L Heavy. Cut the dauber size on one end, and the other for the common, missing oil plugs. Once heat treated, we'll see how it does. Thank you for your help.

Hi, I commented on one of your other videos about the shear tool, I'm the one that runs screw machines, this video is kind of the same thing on what we use for form tools, except it's in a different holder with a dove tale and much bigger, once again great video.

Hmmm, I have a form too for my table saw. Actually it was an idea by Sears for making wood molding. It was a device to replace the saw blade and it held three tools that could be used to molding. It was a scary piece and I only succeeded to make one piece of molding. I feared for my hands, fingers, and life as it was a rather precarious endeavor. So I was happy to see this video. And no questions here and no reply is necessary.

If you don't have any tapered end-mills, you can produce a tapered hole on a lathe by boring with the compound slide of set and then cut the steel in half to leave you with a half moon shape that can be hardened.

I'm looking forward to your heat treating videos. I saw your tool turn blue on the grinding wheel. I've always been told I've ruined a tool if this happens but I don't know why. Maybe it's not ruined if it's heat treated after?

High speed steel can take that heat. blue is only 600 deg. Common carbon steel--probably not.

On the grinder I noticed that he runs the part left-right against the wheel. This is to prevent the wheel from getting a groove cut into its face. I have seen too many wheels that the face wasn't flat. Of course there is a tool that will redress the wheel back flat again - many grinders come with one. Use it!

You would just mill it in its soft sate before it was hardened, it would be similar to milling normal mild steel, just a bit slower!

For a 1336 belt drive lathe with a 2HP motor how big of a form tool can you use? I can't find any information on sizes for form tools. I would love to do a project with about 2.5-3 inch form tools for aluminum and brass.

What is the limit on radius for a tool like this? Can one be made to handle a 2” radius? Yes, I realize it can be made, but I’m asking if there would be problems cutting a ball that size. Thanks, Paul
@theseldomseenkid6251 Жыл бұрын
It comes down to the rigidity of the setup and the material being cut. The bigger the radius and the harder the material, the more chatter prone things are going to be. It can be used as an excuse to buy a bigger lathe ;) .
