as a student of Production Engineering and now a teacher for the same, this video brings back so many fond memories of disassembling the lathe during my stint at a Teaching Assistant (for my PhD). I used to volunteer for the overhauling and maintenance of the machine. Learnt a lot more about the machines by disassembling and putting them back , than the knowledge I got from books. Great way of explanation and thanks for this.

Another one out of the ball park! My lathe dragged this tip over for me to view. It always looks foward to your Clausing videos. Mine has a 14" scroll jaw that will make white dots appear before your eyes when it get changed out. Oh, by the way, your wife switched toothbrushes with you when you mentioned cleaning the chuck. Unlike an independent jaw chuck, (the jaws are all identical), the teeth on the jaws of a scroll chuck are all in different positions (unless the number of jaws = the number of thread starts on the scroll !) as the thread scroll will have progressed a third every further jaw around. You could put the jaws in the correct order in the wrong slots - and get away with it BUT accuracy is lost. So always put jaw 1 in slot 1 first - then 2 and finally 3 (or 4).

10-4 Toly [a few posts down]on using a little diesel fuel as a general shop solvent...cleans well and leaves a little super light oil to prevent rust untill you can oil up with the 20WT. GREAT SHOW AS ALWAYS MR PETE Bless you!

Thank you sir, just watched it, went down and took apart my d1-4 6" chuck and cleaned. I was noticing a sticky point mid way in tightening. The scroll and gears spun pretty easily after oiling. The jaws I tried before I put the scroll in and they were all tight just sliding. I used dykem to check but it wasn't much help. The chuck was noticeably smoother however and a great lesson in how they work.

Thanks Mr. Pete, I just took apart and cleaned my 3 jaw, went from .030 run out to .003. I am very happy with the results. I used simple green and a ultrasonic cleaner. Blew it off with compressed air , sprayed with denatured alchol and then oiled everything with sterret m oil. I also loctited the screws. this is a factory new chuck, it still had cosmoline on it. Thanks for showing me how to do this!!!! Jack

@@millomweb Woodturners use 4-jaw scroll chucks which have opened up a huge range of stock holding options rather than screwing wood to a faceplate or gluing it to a glue-block.

As an engineer, I'd go heavy on the lubrication ! Pinion bearings - greased. Pinions & crown wheel - probably greased and oiled. Crown wheel greased prior to refitting - on its critical bearing surfaces - and once installed, with the chuck face up, the scroll well-oiled - and probably refit the jaws prior to remounting the chuck on the lathe. I think I'd agree with you re the thinnest smear of oil on the nose and chuck taper. Can't say the oil streak up the wall bothers me :)

That was pretty good but I was missing one thing. When you disassembly any type of construction that you haven't done before you have no idea of how things are held in place, where you can bend and punch and where you can not. Every time you try working on your car you break some plastic holder because you cant see how it should have been done until it is too late. Therefore I think it is bad that you jump over the disassemble part so hastily. Seeing what tricks can be used on a stubborn piece and how stubborn you can expect it to be is really helpful the first time.

Thanks, Mrpete. My chuck was starting to bind and I knew what was inside, but wanted a quick demo before taking it apart. Plastic dead-blow hammer, brass drift and a couple of screwdrivers used very carefully got it apart. Someone had plenty of grease on hand last time it was open and took a bit of time to clean properly. I used an open-gear lube on the gears that I have for the lathe's gear train because I had it on hand and it seems less likely to gunk up over time like grease, and some way oil on the scroll and jaws so maybe less likely to hold chips. I also ran a tap and die for the six retaining screws because why not?

Hi mrpete, how would you recommend stopping the lathe from turning whilst undoing the chuck or collet. I have been engaging the back gear to lock it and it works fine but some other user has been howling that it's a terrible this thing to do to a lathe. To me when running the lathe normally all the drive goes through the same pin anyway, Without hammering or shocking the chuck I just firmly turn it with a lever and it comes of. I also had fun replacing the jaws with the 1-2-3 trick and they kept coming out crooked when finally I had a real close look at the jaws and # 1 had 2 teeth missing from the previous owner.

Bounty towels, no other brand will do. I love the wit. Any good moly grease on the gears will work I suggest. I use Non-detergent oils on my lathe.

I used to run a LeBlond engine LATHE at the Newport NEWS shipyard on the enterprise refuel overhaul team. I know a little something about machining ? Lol But i kinda like this video. Just make sure you burn it in your subscription base to never sand or grind the parts (backing plate scroll plate etc) so the parts go together EASY that clearance leads to runout etc. Makes things go together easy but for superb accuracy a slight press or interference fit assures better concentricity ! A scotchbright pad does GOOD 👍 Say a video on LATHE spindle bearings (preload) and checking redressing the spindle taper would make a nice video to teach you subscribers !!! (Easier said than done) If the scroll plate is sloppy you'll never get a 3 or 6 or 4 scroll chuck to stay accurate. Man I've seen spindle tapers chewed up from poor workers so bad it makes me sick !!! Oh well just trying to help out. Good video Sir ALL THE BEST.

I had many problems in adjusting for the right L-00 taper 8˚ 17' 50" and adjusting the Minutes and seconds in digital in order to adjust the taper with an indicator. I need to make the 6 TPI and really on't know how to make the keyway inside the taper. Hope you will need your back plate soon 😊

"Scroll" chuck. If you get a normal piece of paper and start rolling it up from one end - then when all rolled up, you look at the end of the roll, you see the edge of the paper spiralling inwards. Just as the thread does on these chucks - hence their name. Paper was scrolled in ancient times rather than being on cut sheets. It's good that the jaws are numbered, but I don't see the point for numbering the slots. It was still great to see the inside of a chuck... now I'm again a bit wiser. Thanks Pete.

The slots are numbered for accuracy, all the slots and jaws are slightly different (wear and manufacturing error), if you use them in the same slots you always have the same setup every time. if you go to the trouble of truing up the jaws you want to keep it that way. Hope that makes sense.

The front faces of the jaws are also ground with the jaws in place so you have good registration when reverse chucking hollow parts. Slot error will throw that off if you mix them up. Slot numbers also remind folks what order to install the jaws.

He Ka Interesting observation- but the jaws need to be installed in a numbered sequence for it to work- and it's a lot less confusing to simply match up the numbers on the jaws with the numbers on the slots.

I have a south bend with a threaded spindle but when I put on the chuck I sort of flick it on so when the threads bottom out it locks so i can run the lathe backwards without being attacked by a flying chuck

Right, wrong or otherwise I cut the register of the spindle slightly undersized and adjusted its centering for best runout for my most frequently chucked material. I plan to drill, tap and install set screws acting against the mounting studs for the chuck to side in the centering.

Gasoline isn't anymore flammable than brake cleaner (if you get the good stuff). Heck i use it as starting fluid. Thanks for the tips! i just picked up an old lathe and the jaws are super stiff to move.

Gas can leave a residue, and (IMHO) it burns your skin worse than brake cleaner. When I was a kid, I used gas. Now I use the more appropriate cleaners. Assume everything is flammable, and you'll probably be ok. :)

I've bought a used JET lathe and was thinking of buying a new chuck as this one looks as if it has been off to war. How do I know which to buy? There are designations on the parts I am not sure of. Actually there is something that can be done to adjust for scroll wear. Though it's a complicated operation. The teeth on the jaws could be redone to fit for the wear. In my mind that could be a worth while thing to do. Just my 2 cents.

In the video, Tubalcain disparages the use of petrol (gasoline) for cleaning. I don't like the smell of it, but what is wrong with it for cleaning?

There's one more type of chuck mount that's probably worth mentioning, which is the bolt up flange type. You'll find this on many of the Chinese sourced machines, which are often based on German or Austrian designs. The ubiquitous 9x20 lathe is based on the EMCO (not ENCO) Compact 8 for example.
