Solid video. MKs can fix anything. The best thing about the USCG is how versatile and responsible its petty officers are.

Another MK here! I became MK just as they combined. I went to MK and out board school in Yorktown. You are 100% right. We had the attitude that we could fix anything but a broken heart. Even if we didn't have the correct parts we would MacGyver something to get by. Still doing it 50 years later but not in the CG of coarse.

We still MacGyver equipment everyday. 😂

On the old 41s mks had to constantly clean the aluminum plating in the hold. So a quick joy ride bikini patrol before sunset meant rags and buckets before quarters. Just a matter of fact with those twin Cummins 904s and the normal prop shaft seal leakage. Coolest instructor back then at Yorktown a school was Petty Officer Fingers. Tallest drink of water you can imagine teaching reduction gearing week. He got me dreaming about my own designs. 3 patents later and one variable timing camshaft design later - I salute him! (Hint if you want guaranteed A school right after boot go reserve).

Great Video about MK. You were spot on on 24/7 on call and last to go on shore leave, I worked as 4e/3ae on a cargo container ship and life was stressful especially on vacuum toilets and faulty purifiers. But at the end of the day, knowing that you accomplished your task gives a relief and satisfaction that I did my job well. Hopefully my waiver gets accepted soon.

The big pro for the MKs is we control the water, power, & light. So all them ops and deck personnel get off the boat 1st, well just remember the MKs control the hot water for your showers. : )

Great video...MK1 veteran here. Our saying on the ship was " Who runs Barter Town!?!" I had the best time as a MK, would have not changed except that i would have stayed on ships rather than small boat stations.

Fantastic job with your videos. Loved the historical knowledge and the pros and cons you mentioned. Looking forward to videos on other rates in the future! I'm curious about your thoughts on Damage Controlman. I'd love a job with variety, working with my hands, practical skills, and ideally would like to be outdoors. Researching and open to helping where needed. Thank you for your time creating these videos.

I knew nothing about any of that before I went to MK A school but even though I work above decks in the civilian world now I've carried that knowledge throughout my life and to this day I'm comfortable when I go into and work/Com with the hole but it's not for me LOL.

Matthew, thanks for the comment. I didn’t know this information before choosing MK neither. I’m trying to make sure our future Coasties are better informed. Hopefully, with more information they will make the correct choice the first time. Choose your rate, choose your fate, lol. Look out for my next video on the BM rate. Don’t forget to subscribe to my channel.

I'm going to college for motorcycle marine and Outdoor Power Products I've learned in boards and Outboards and I'm wondering if maybe this would be a good way use my trade in the military
@fysawareness50025 ай бұрын
Definitely. The skills you have acquired would greatly benefit you if you decide to job and choose the MK career path. MK’s at coast guard station work on both inboard and outboard motors.

What if I went MK and hate it, can I change rate? What to expect in switching rates?
@fysawareness50022 жыл бұрын
Torres, appreciate the questions. There is a process to change rates. I will try and cover it in a short video.

Super excited to enlist after graduation. Is the A School wait time long for MK?
@fysawareness50028 ай бұрын
No wait time is about 3-6 months. I believe they are offering a bonus as well.
