Good to see some of the new generation of diy enthusiasts have taken a love to old machinery. Attention to detail with your machining is outstanding. Very nice job on the lathe makeover by the way. I was always told (by a machinest) never to run your lathe with an empty chuck. The centrifugal force can damage the scroll inside the chuck. Of course, spinning by hand or running at a very low rpm would be insignificant. Anyone else heard this before ???
@cavemanjoe79724 жыл бұрын
The way I've heard it is to never run your chuck with the *jaws* empty (and not clamped together), which is understandable.

Why is necessary to use cast iron instead of steel? Economics? Dampening vibrations? Dimensional stability? Anti seizing? I need to make one plate for our CNC lathe and I associate cast iron with broken machinery parts. I thought that parts were made of cast iron to reduce manufacturing costs but then I read somewhere that the flakes of carbon make cast iron very effective dampenig vibrations, so I wonder if your choice is related to that property.
