Charles Parker Jr. (August 29, 1920 -- March 12, 1955), also known as Yardbird and Bird, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer.
Parker acquired the nickname "Yardbird" early in his career and the shortened form, "Bird", which continued to be used for the rest of his life, inspiring the titles of a number of Parker compositions, such as "Yardbird Suite", "Ornithology", "Bird Gets the Worm", and "Bird of Paradise."
Parker was a highly influential jazz soloist and a leading figure in the development of bebop, a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic technique, and improvisation. Parker introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas, including rapidly passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. His tone ranged from clean and penetrating to sweet and somber. Many Parker recordings demonstrate virtuosic technique and complex melodic lines, combining jazz with other musical genres, including blues, Latin, and classical.
Parker was an icon for the hipster subculture and later the Beat Generation, personifying the jazz musician as an uncompromising artist and intellectual, rather than an entertainer.

Machito, born Francisco Raúl Gutiérrez Grillo on February 16, 1908, was an influential Latin jazz musician who helped refine Afro-Cuban jazz and create both Cubop and salsa music. He was raised in Havana alongside the singer Graciela, his foster sister.
In New York City, Machito formed the band the Afro-Cubans in 1940 and with Mario Bauzá as musical director, brought together Cuban rhythms and big band arrangements in one group. He made numerous recordings from the 1940s to the 1980s, many with Graciela as singer. Machito changed to a smaller ensemble format in 1975, touring Europe extensively. He brought his son and daughter into the band and received a Grammy Award in 1983, one year before he died.
Machito's music had an effect on the lives of many musicians who played in the Afro-Cubans over the years and on those who were attracted to Latin jazz after hearing him. George Shearing, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Stan Kenton credited Machito as an influence. An intersection in East Harlem is named "Machito Square" in his honor.

So much tension, frustration and happiness, so many emotions and sudden dansable mood changes, false endings, questions, trips and roads and answers. This is a goddamn arthouse action movie. Great music! God bless "Afro Cuban rhythms for drumset" that brought me here.. and Charles Parker Jr., it's nice to meet you

I hope all the admirers of this piece realize that _two_ saxohonists are featured--Bird and Flip Phillips. It's Bird on the first part of Mambo, Phillips on Mambo 2. On Jazz Phillips takes the first solo, Bird the second, then they trade 4s. I'm surprised no one has given kudos to Mario Bauza's beautiful trumpet playing at the outset. And, as has been noted by one or two other commenters, the credit for composing and arranging this landmark piece goes to Chico O'Farrell.

I have been studying this album since I found it in my dad's record collection back in the mid 1970s. I recommend this album to all arrangers and composers out there in the universe. Dated 1949 this music is still relevant and a challenge for any master musician to keep up with...Chico O'Farrell arranging at his best, as is every performer on this ground breaking Machito album.

That is so cool that this music brings us together with family memories. Machito! I used to stick my head into the speaker box to try and hear every instrument when I was about 12 years old :) Jose Mangual Sr. on the bongo is incrediable too on this album! I borrow these licks every time I play bongo :)

According to my ears, and guesswork, Parker solos as follows (not an exhaustive list, times only approximate): 3:55 to 4:50 6:04 to 7:29 (or is that somebody else??) 10:43 to 10:52 [11:03 not him, it’s a tenor sax] 11:55 onwards then 12:20 to 12:45 ‘fours’ or eights (?) alternating with the tenor. Can anybody correct the above? Or name other musicians on this?

+Myron Helton Hi, Myron, no matter what we say about pop music it will always be shitty to a lot of us, but it will always be here. Singers are not musicians is the problem. If they were they would not produce what they make. A lot of great composers created music for singers. They did not create the sorriest music for them. So I say singers are the sorriest not the music so much. Paul Anka was a good example of the sorriest. I worked for a lot of great musicians, composers and conductors and a lot of the sorriest too. The problem with our business is the people who control it are the sorriest. Thanks for you note. Greg Henry Waters

Im also into early seventies Pioner & Sony receivers, as advertized on youtube as vintage receivers. Back then the receivers were built with far better sounding natural analog transistors. I have a Fantastic set of $30 computer speakers,.with a sub that must be turned way down to keep the sub from breaking, from Office Max, now called Office Depot, called model number ca 3080, on Office max website. These little speakers sound like $1,000 speakers! I think God intended for us to listen to music as natural as possible. I like rock music. Two years ago I got into Jazz lps.I didnt know what I was missing in jazz before 2years ago. I also like Late sixties blues. Click on the below link & you will see on his site with my name 2places that has what I think were the best 150 sounding lps & cds.Mostly what I like is great guitarists.

I'm looking out for all this Latin Jazz dope! What I'm after is more like the "pure percussion" tracks; some of them you can breakdance to - Proper Rhythm with a capital P and a capital R. PEACE :)
