Fantastic build! Folded tail and rotors is a great way to save shelf space for storage as well - great that Airfix included that option. I wish Airfix would do a 1:48 Westland Wasp (RN, New Zealand and South African versions as options) to sit alongside that.

Great build. I am undertaking building all the aircraft types I have worked on. This is among them. So thanks for sharing your build. Ok, the corner structure in the cabin, we called the broom cupboard, contained the engines computers and the control rods and pulleys etc that transferred the pilots flight control inputs to the control surfaces. The cannards, as you call them are called sponsons and the flotation devices fitted to them, are basically cans containing huge ball shaped bags. When the CO2 bottles are fired the gas rapidly inflates the bags and blows of the can lids. Oh and the shield in front of the engines is also a FOD shield. (Foreign Object Damage)

To answer a couple of your questions: 13:33 The larger "teardrop" sponsons were original to the Sikorsky design and housed retractable main gear for improved endurance in long ASW missions, but were deemed unnecessary for the HC.4 as it was primarily a troop transport where weight rather than drag was considered a greater factor. The landing gear was simplified (fixed in place) to this end, rendering the sponsons superfluous. The small cylindrical thing on the end is an explosive flotation device that deploys automatically in the event of a ditching. 26:10 The primary purpose of this cover is to reduce FOD risk. Russian helicopters often have an anti-ice function to their FOD covers but it's not necessary for British Naval helicopters who rarely operate in icing conditions. A sand filter could be fitted in its place for desert operations, but this also worked in cold environments to protect the engines from larger chunks of ice.

@@kitbag9033HC4 was retrofitted with anti-icing sometime in the 80s IIRC. Merlin and Wildcat have it as standard, with the windscreen being blasted with hot air to prevent ice buildup as well

@@cerperalpurposeThanks for that extra info.
@JunglieWafu17 күн бұрын
@@cerperalpurposethe Merlin windscreen doesn’t actually get blasted with hot air to prevent icing. In fact, the windscreen ‘anti ice’ is more of a de-ice. It’s turned on below zero degrees and heats up the windscreen through heating elements within the windshield itself.

Impressive modelling having worked on the mk 2 Royal Navy at prestwick I recall having to take up the round plates on the deck and climbing head first into the fuel tanks not good if you can’t do enclosed spaces and the relying on your mates to pull you out legs first also the seat pan should have a yellow box inserted as it hold the single seat life raft and the beige cover is sheep skin which would get rather grubby

I have found that Airfix kits can tend to be over-engineered, introducing complexity where just a little simplification will result in a cleaner result.

@mh53jАй бұрын
I pre-ordered one of these from Airfix US; I really like the HC-4 (and especially the HAR 3) version, but after seeing this it looks like there are going to be a lot of fit issues and seams that need filling. I'm not crazy about "blanking plates" used to fill areas not found on this particular version; the one on the starboard side behind the door to cover the window opening found on other versions is really noticeable. It doesn't look like that on the real aircraft. I know Airfix are trying to get the most out of the same molds, but maybe new fuselage halves would have been in order? From what I can tell, it is the same if you don't use the airflow strake on the port side tail... blanking plates to fill in the mounting holes. Trying to get them to blend in is going to be a real challenge. Maybe I should just wait for an HAR 3 where these won't be an issue.

Sordid kits are defiantly more harder now than years ago, approx 1998 I built a 1/72 mosquito. I’m building one right now and it’s far more complex
@RMillerism19 күн бұрын
Just saying, if you enjoy it, go for it. But it's not for me. I just want to relax when I build, not worry about bad fit or shape issues. It's about enjoyment and that level of complexity is not for me. Have fun, whatever you do.

Looks absolutely amazing! The interior does look quite plain, but I feel like it allows for the viewer to see your techniques much better. The green also looks great, and it would also work really well on armour kits, probably American subjects mainly. I am actually considering getting a new airbrush, and I am thinking of the Procon Boy. Do you know how much it costs it Hannants, as it is £90 on Amazon, so I am wondering where to buy it from if I was to get one. Merry Christmas to you, and I am unsure on whether I will be able to go to Hannants in 2024 still, so if not, then I hope to see this next year. Great job once again Luke :)
@machmodelsАй бұрын
Thank you very much! Procon down at Hannants is £150. The main selling point of getting it there is that if anything goes wrong we will help you out and fix in house if need be, if you get it online we can’t help you out. I personally like to tell people to think about the extra cost as an almost warranty. It’s up to you at the end of the day. Merry Christmas!
@KGmodelsАй бұрын
@machmodels Honestly, I think a guarantee by people who are more experienced with it than I am is better than just getting a 'Supposed guarantee' online. Also, Amazon parcels could decide to...get lost, but I guess you can never lose something you physically bought and have on yourself. Great to hear, and a trip to Hannants is probably inevitable in the near future (As I said, probably 2025), and I hope you will have a great rest of your weekend.
@madmemesbroАй бұрын
@@KGmodels All that isn't worth £70 difference though. Not a chance. Hannants are RRP lovers with 10% max off. Only worth it if there's something you need that isn't in stock cheaper anywhere else. Also, @machmodels , offering a product of service that doesn't exist to justify an almost double price point from another market place is treading a fine line on the patch of legality of warranties. Trust me, I've worked with FCA regulated products before and that's not a route you want to go down and I'd suggest you don't justify a higher price as a pseudo warranty product.

Great job on the SEA KING, really appreciate the work involved in making it, however I have one bit of criticism for you, in making your videos keep in mind that you might have younger kids watch the build process and shooting the "bird" to the bird is giving the not so appropriate suggestion that it's ok, just food for thought. I haven't built this particular kit, but I have built several helicopter kits and each one had at least 1 or more fiddly areas. My thoughts on this particular kit are that it is over-engineered and poorly detailed with poor fit. Regardless of the drawbacks, you did a beautiful job with it. You 've got a beautiful way of painting that I've been trying my best to emulate, but my airbrush skills and my airbrush are not up to par yet.
@mh53jАй бұрын
The over engineering concerns me as well. Having an interior capsule and a multi part exterior fuselage increases the chances of everything not fitting together when everything "comes together." If parts aren't perfectly aligned, the entire thing will be thrown off. Constant dry fitting and trimming will be necessary.
