I bought this last year when it came out. This mod taught me how to solder. I hated soldering, and was hopelessly bad at it. I wanted one of these so bad that I decided to conquer my soldering woes once and for all. While waiting for the parts I practiced desoldering and soldering on a broken PC motherboard. When the time came to build the GBA, it worked first try! Now that I know how to solder I've gone down the rabbit hole of countless other projects that I was previously unable to do. Btw, this mod was so fun I built 4 of them, sold 3, and kept one for myself. I built the first one by removing the chipset from my dead GBA (after trying literally everything to save it), and the other 3 I just ordered the donar chipsets from HHL.

Just want to say that after building a funnyplaying gameboy color, I was eager to do this GBA build but had no soldering experience up to this point. Watching this video gave me the courage to learn the skill and give it a shot - took some time and patience, but I was able to get it done even being brand new to this. For anyone watching this and thinking they need to get a hot air gun and all this expensive equipment, I did it with a chip-quick kit, a pinecil usb soldering iron, the flux from Tito's amazon link, a small roll of lead free solder and a small roll of solder braid. Took about 3 hours to remove the old chips, clean up the pins and remove the chip quick alloy, and resolder to the new mother board and clean up my bridges. Still waiting on the screen to come in stock, but I plugged in the battery to test it - it turned on, you could hear the sound, the LEDs lit up, and if I plug a cartridge into the slot, you can hear the game starting. Can't wait for the screens to get in so I can finish the build!

I justed installed this mod myself, your video was very detailed and helpful. I did notice you glossed over the bracket for the screen while installing. This may just be because I used a OEM board, so this is for anyone who needs help when that (you may want to pin this comment tito lol) I also if you test your screen before hand (as you should) if your using a OEM board and notice you have no image, you may have to flip the cable going into the main board so the contacts faces the opposite direction. I found a piece of plastic I thought it looked like a piece of molding that was left over from manufacturer but that bracket is important, don't throw it out! Without it the screen isnt fully secured and just flops around in the shell. ----- This info is for everyone who gets this lcd screen kit for reference: Also when installing, soft fit the bracket into the empty shell first so you know the correct Orientation (its awkwardly shaped can only fit one way, so take your time!) Once you are sure of the orientation, do as shown with the ribbon cable, this time do it from screen side first, you can connect it to the main board later. So let's start with the screen, place it face down on something soft i used the padding foam that came with my delivery. Now you should belooking at it from the underside, the screen will have a ribbon cable attached to the right of the screen, tuck it behind the screen as close as you can CAREFULLY, ribbon cables are very sensitive and tear easy. You don't need to force it, just make it sit flush with the side. Take care when doing this. Next is the bracket, once your sure of orientation, place it on the backend of the screen, you should have enough room on the right so that the ribbon cable fits inside the bracket, not out. If you put the LCD ribbon cable on the outside of the bracket you'll potentially pinche the ribbon cable between the bracke and contacts from the main board, potentially causing issues in the future and not have enough room to reach the connection on the main board when we get to that, messing up your day, and possibly new screen. Next take the 3 "Y" shaped ribbon cable by itself and connect it and fold it as tito showed above to the LCD. The bottom end of the ribbon cable goes underneath the LCD bracket as well (don't adhere it to the screen just yet, you may still need some play later) The top part of this ribbon also goes under the bracket too, once you got everything neat and pretty, if your shell came with a cover over the link port, carefully pry that out then go ahead and place it in the shell, and remember take your time lining the bracket in the shell, let the top ribbon freely over hang the shell. straighten the top ribbon out the best you can do it will line up while you connect it to the motherboard, if your good enough with your hands I recommend putting the main board in place first while the ribbon overhangs the case and connect it that way. If not you can still connect to the motherboard from the outside and flip it over as tito shows. Just keep in mind, doing it that way may cause added stress to the cable as the main board requirements repositioning while trying to line it up with the shell. Once you have the ribbon connected to the mainboard, finish any testing to make sure everything works, then you can adhere the touch sensor, this should be the very last step before you put the back shell on, cause once it's down its a pain to get back off. Close up and complete everything else as shown! Hope this helps!

GBA and GBC gets so much love, I really wish there was an AMOLED Screen Mod for the original PSP.

I would love to see a behind-the-scenes about how you do the product shot flyarounds during the intro (not the turntable identity part but like, the bit at 0:40)

What are you preserving if you just have an all brand new gameboy? Its like that mind game, how many boards do you have to replace on the ship, before its no longer the old ship, but a whole new ship? This is basically just a brand new modern gameboy.

The CPU/ brain of the original game boy was saved, so it’s like giving it a shiny new ass like Bender the robot than replacing it as a whole system
