Big R (Roadway) freight lines put the 318 Detroit in the R model Mack for there fleet tractors for decades, in the 20th century. Many moons ago as kid, I used to ride my bike to the interstate and watch the trucking company my Dad drove for Associated Transport. He worked out of a terminal in town. There where many others here as well as the Roadways, TimeDC, Strickland, Johnson Motor lines, Mason-Dixon(hand shaker), Snuffy Smith(Smith-Transfer), Pilot freight all rip taring and racing up and down the interstate. It was a lot of fun for me to watch them drivers do their thing as they drove past me.

Where you live conray ? Smith was in bell/charleston wv and timedc had a terminal in Cleveland. Oh ?

+John Hutsenpiller Bell lines was here in Roanoke. Va, as well. So was General, Heminway Frt. lines, Wilson Mtr lines. It's been a long time since those companies where around. I probably have missed some. Roanoke use to be the eastern hubs for most those truck lines. It has been a good 45 years since those days. It was great while they were here. I liked a 903 cumins too. Had to drive them like a 318. Thanks

Your welcome sir i live in rainelle wv and was born in Cleveland. Set up right the Detroit wasn't bad. With todays 18-speed they'd a did super. But they old ways and trucks etc are leaving us to computerized crap. I remember when a 270 cummins was a big boy !! Old times had value Sad to see it fade away. Take care Buddy.

+John Hutsenpiller How about a thermodyne Mack with a 185 Mack engine and a two stick triplex. Back in the day they said if you keep up with a Snuffy Smith across US 60 through Rainelle all the way to Charleston W.Va, then they would you was one hell of a tractor trailer driver. Hell now days all that is driving is a bunch of school boys that can't drive worth a crap. I know you remember Gooseball Brown. Put in your search in KZbin, see if you remember that song.

I's coming back from the buckeye one night years back 1996-8 and 64 was shut down. I told em just run up ol 60 and pick up 64 at sam black. Them school boy cdl holders wouldn't do it. Said i was crazy ! I told em i ran it 5 days a week empty and loaded--(120,000) coal bucket !!! I ran alone no one would take my offer. They sat on 64 parked 8+ hrs. Scared to run the mountains. They don't make em like they used too ole buddy.

You said it. I know of 12v71 Detroit than was in a logging yarder. the operaters said their was something slightly off about it for two years. When they finally tore down the engine, they found out that it has thrown two piston and rod assembelys through the block into the crankcase. It ran like that for two years!!!!! Detroits are tough as fucken nails!!

Yeah, it was a sad day. But, it was also a lot on GM too... They sold Detroit because they saw no further profit gain in an engine that had too many restrictions on it. It was like one of those arrangements that you put too much in, but you don't get enough back out to cover your costs.

@DWLip5 жыл бұрын
No, it's probably original. A lot of fleet Mack's ran Detroits. Mack engines were rare in fleets to my knowledge. Most Mack-powered, well, Macks were usually cement trucks, dump trucks or were run by the operators themselves.

Can some Mack wizard tell if there have been Scania engines maybe somewhere 70-80`s? In Sweden was told that to Mack had exported engines from Scania, or was they maybe engines for busses?
@slowpoke77598 жыл бұрын
Maybe in some experimental off-road equipment, but not in the Mack or any other truck maker. In those days most all truck manufacturers, put the engine the customer preferred, in what wanted period. During the same time period, they also used many different transmission combinations as well, chassis and suspension.

Your right, Detroit Diesels do not suck, but you have to remember, Detroit's loved diesel. They had horrible gas mileage. So that, and the multiple saddening EPA laws that were passed, is what really killed the Detroit.
@kennethrobinson1123114 жыл бұрын
@MasterWitchDoctor Man tell these kids. They have never drove one. DD was made for the US army and others back in 1939 for a low cost, light.and could be run in both cw or ccw so that they would put in all kinds of equipment. 100,000 miles and they had to be overhauled. They leaked so much oil, some people never change oil in them. I've had them and i know.

Depends on the driver. 6mpg is very good for this engine on the highway and loaded in Aussie gallons at 4.5 litres. US gallons 3.8. The best transmission for these 71s is the Road ranger RTO 910 with 4.11 Rockwells for lighter loads or 4.88 for heavier loads and still have highway speed 62 mph with revs in reserve. Also the RTO 9513.

@SeaDollarsBertram I don't know where you get your info from but a Detroit 71 and 92 series can't pull a tooth pick out of a club sandwich. My buddies 83 359 with an NTC400 blew his frieghtshaker with an 8v92 away so bad he sold the junky thing. Plus the oil leaks were ridiculous and so was the fact that the 8v92 was prown to overheating with any kind of heavy load. In simple terms they're pieces of crap compared to any Cummins NTC of that era. This is why the series 60 was patterned after them.
@MasterWitchDoctor14 жыл бұрын
@SeaDollarsBertram The highest form of flattery is imitation, as is the case of the series60. A complete spin off of the Cummins NTC with some minor head changes like the SOHC and computerized fuel injection. Now there is the N14 which murders them with little effort. The series60 is stronger than dirt and the N14 beats the 515+ with no problem. So please learn some about the 71 and 92 series before trying to tell me something when I know better from experience.

@DamnStraightM35A2 ROFL they're a weakling then and an even bigger weakling now. Nothing like working on an old Jimmy and getting covered in oil. Cummins NTC and NTA made these things obsolete. They made real power not just noise. My uncles 1969 Kenworth W925 could snatch ANY 8V71 powered truck backwards. His truck was a 1969 W925 with a 380 Cummins and 16 speed spicer with Dana rears. It was a "real Truck" not some noisy oil leaker that couldn't pull a tooth pick out a club sandwich.

Ever seen a stretch frame R-model Mack with a dog house sleeper and a 12v71 with 90 cc injectors with a R913 road rangersend comment transmission and 3:70 rears and set up to turn 3000 RPM's; would give a 500hp Mack a very hard time no matter the load, most anywhere. But the down side of a hot 12v71as described, if you didn't pay attention, you could melt that Detroit.
