To skip the battery part go to 6:04
This 1977 R Model Mack has been hard to start. We clean up the battery cables and make a few tweaks. Then it comes back with a damaged radiator. Follow along as I repair the radiator, reseal the timing cover, and replace the front main seal.

You are more right than you even know lol. Double edged sword with that. Once farmers have a guy that does it all and that they can trust, they won't take it anywhere else, for anything and they will tell everyone else about him and then all the other farmers will send their stuff to him. Which is both good and bad. Money is good, but they can also be misers and if you only rely on the farmers, once you have a dry spell and need other work, there isn't any because you're always turning other work away to cater to the farmers. Because you NEVER turn away a farmer in need. Once you do, you likely won't see them again.

A little "Mack History". I you have a gold Bulldog on the hood that is considered a "Petagree " truck. Which means it's all Mack. The Engine, Transmission, and rear differentials are all Mack components. If your Bulldog is silver, then you have a "Curb Stone Setter" which means your truck is made up of a mix of drive train components. Just a blast from the past. .

I drove Mack trucks for over 30 years and after checking fluid levels under the hood you fired it up and let it idle for a minimum of 1 minute so you had lube oil flowing everywhere then you rev it up to kick in the alternator. A Mack is one of the best trucks I ever drove local or over the road. Started out on a B-81 ten wheel dump 5th gear high split 47 MPH. It was one of 200 trucks built for the 1964 worlds fair in NYC. 160 horsepower thermadyne engine no turbo. Last was a 1986 Triaxle with a 400 horsepower and a Allison 6 speed automatic. I’ll take a Mack any day even the one you’re working on. Food for thought

We in Alabama have a saying, when you die you'll have to go through Atlanta before going to heaven or hell. We have a major USPS distribution center here. But if I mailed a letter to my next door neighbor, 4 days because it goes to birmingham, then atlanta, back to birmingham then to our local office before it gets delivered

@@craigsmith8217 another example of idiocracy. I ordered some hinges for a '91 z71 out of NJ. The parts came from california. I tracked them (ups). Two distribution centers in california, 1 in denver, 1in dallas, 1 in memphis, 1 in nashville, from nashville it traveled through Birmingham (we have two centers) went south to montgomery, back to Birmingham west center then to the east center and finally two weeks later I got my hinges. Ughhh.

Like UPS is any better.... Doesn't matter who you ship with, they ALL have problems. The more critical or time-sensitive the job and part(s) are, the more likely it is that one of those "problems" will strike and your parts go missing and your job gets held up.

I used to have the same problem with black cabs in London. The manufacturer bought parts from everybody. Bits of the cab were Ford, other bits were Volvo, Nissan,Fiat. Once the cab was ten years old the manufacturer wasn't interested in stocking any parts at all.

I've had Fed-x do the same stunt and I've spent many a day in an R-model with a 300 Plus with that tip turbine intercooler setup and a 2-stick 6-speed. It might've had a 237 and it was swapped over. That's where the cut cab and double air cleaner lines came from to get the 300 to work. Tough old trucks and someone ought to know how to pull one so not to kill it. You did a fine job and a pal of mine is running an R-model tandem dump with the same setup. That lad was READY to go! GBWYall!

I've come by your channel recently and spent a few evenings catching up. I myself have spent a majority of my life fixing everything under the sun and exited the industry as a Rolls-Royce/Bentley technician...and it took me days into your videos to find a mistake in your work. Don't get bent out of shape, compared to most youtube automotive repair videos, your work and diag ability is way up there. So I was a bit taken back to see you coat a battery post with dielectric grease. Dielectric grease does not conduct electricity and its printed on every package to NOT put it on the contact surfaces....anyway, you do you; I still enjoy the videos.

Worked for a guy that had an old B model Mack. Had two pairs of 6 volt batteries, a pair on each side like that truck. But they were hooked up to a series-parallel switch mounted on the back of the cab. The pairs of batteries were normally parallel to each other. When you hit the starter it put the batteries in series and put 24 volts to the starter. A set of contacts in that switch burnt out and the batteries on the right side couldn't connect back to the 12 volts to charge, and would die after a few starts. That switch was $98 45 years ago. (That truck had a huge 12 volt generator and was positive ground)

Wes you are using your battery terminal pliers backwards. Put the cable next to the handles, the spreading end is then by the bolt. Works easier. When this farm boy first saw one of those, I got them. 2 years later the JD mechanic was working on our 5020, saw me using the pliers on a truck. He showed me how to use them easier, and battery terminal grease to prevent terminal corrosion. I was about 7th or 8th grade. Dad had a bad hip so I did more mechanic and maintenance work. Hello from north east Montana.
