I'd never heard of her before. Then just now the local jazz station played her album version of this tune. Instantly captivated - love her dynamic mix of smokey depths and sweet highs - had to look her up, and here I am: her newest fan. And Mr. Keys (Aaron Diehl according to Harold Jackson's comment and Bing Search's confirmation) - yes sir, that's the STUFF.

Let's just put it this way... I saw Cecile's early show in Denver at Dazzle Jazz and right after her show was over I hopped in line to see her last set, money in hand! No regrets! No two songs were the same and the feel was different. She saved the challenging material for the final set and opened with the bright and lively standards. I'd never done that before.

I just had the opportunity to see Cecile at Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival - and this was my favorite show in 4 yrs of attending this festival. All I could think was that this must have been what it was like when people first heard Ella Fitzgerald. You knew you were in the presence of someone very, very special.

Brilliant. Listening to her is like listening to three or four singers take turns. Her voice goes low and almost operatically rich, goes high and playful, verges on sprechgesang; she bends notes and then allows some to float with the purest classical precision. She is a diva and yet there is something very intimate and immediate about the way she sings.

Astonishing anyone would give this a thumbs-down! Ms. Salvant's presentation... well, I CAN'T do that! I wish I could! The troubles in childhood, I kept silent, studied, wrote the books, sent them out. BUT THRU MY LIFE my mind's sanity anchored to the Great American Standards, Musicals. Hard to play favorites, but "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" rises into top tier. I love her & THANK YOU Mack Avenue. Have shared on Twitter. I mention this song, what it means to me, at the end of my "Leaving Neverland" video. Continued successes. TONS of love, from Reno.

This is one of the greatest interpretations -- the pianist is like the ticking of the clock whose time the singer doesn't know. What a stroke of genius! And she picks up the rhythmic game in the final verse. Oh, and her voice too. This was the first thing I heard from her years ago, and definitely not the last.

There’s just a little bit of silly here, allow me to point it out please. There are many truly great jazz players active right now. Creating, vital, performing, educating… Not only the brilliant Cecile. Sure, it’s understandable to idolize & practically worship geniuses of the 1950s-60s. And I bet back then, many folks were saying “there just aren’t any great jazz musicians left. No one to take the places of Earl Hines and Sidney Bechet!” - and yet, the sun rose for another day and great players appeared. To name a few contemporary greats: Bill Charlap, Christian McBride, Brian Blade, Pat Metheny, Steve Bernstein, Joe Calderazzo, Kurt Elling - feel me? Quiet mic drop... sh’poom!! Please note, I enjoy spirited debate. I’m not hating or attacking anyone, just hoping for a conversation. I’m from New York, we are respectfully blunt.

Yes, a lovely piece of writing from Fred Kaplan. Interesting, the twists, turns and roadblocks in life. Cecile McLorin Salvant, in the early stages, did almost everything she could NOT to be a jazz diva! Thankfully her prodigious talent, and support from wonderful people at crucial times, prevailed. Always makes me wonder about the lost genius of those for whom the dice rolled the other way.
