Wonder why Brackettville wasn't assigned a Federal Marshall, like Yuma (Harmon), Abilene (Bill Hickock) and Dodge (Matt Dillon), for instance?
@royfredrickson61375 жыл бұрын
Federal Marshals were responsible for territories not just towns. On THE DEPUTY Henry Fonda played the chief or territorial Federal marshal of Arizona. There was a town marshal and deputies.

In real life McKenzie was a controversial figure post civil war. during the Civil War he was well thought of by General Grant, even though he was one of later officers to enter the war. He was well decorated in the field and promoted under battle condition repeatedly. But his men largely did not like him. He was a heavy disciplinarian with a mean strike. This series takes place in 1883 during the year he was promoted to Brigadier General and in real life placed in charge of Texas. In real life but not shown in the series, he had purchased a ranch in Texas and was engaged to be married but his marriage never told place because his bizarre and progressively erratic conduct simply could not be ignored. Basically in 1983 he went completely nuts but he had been going nuts for quite some time. Unfortunately, some portion of his military exploits were probably attributable to the progression of this aspect of the disease. By 1983, the time this series is depicting, his men knew he was not “right” and Washington knew it. This dementia was originally attributed to a head injury from a fall from a wagon. In reality, Mackenzie was forced out of the army because of his increasing dementia in March 1984 because of the dementia, neurological impairment and “probably” psychosis or at minimum delusional thinking,- less than 1 year from when this series takes place. In reality the diagnosis and official cause of death was pareses of the insane which is an invariably fatal consequence of syphilis. It takes anywhere from 10 to 30 years from onset of the disease to develop and is characterized by personality changes and severe progressive neurological impairment, along with delusions, grandiose thinking and psychosis. It affected much as 25% of men who were committed to mental institutions at the time because they frequently could not be managed in home. Between 1873 and 1882 there were at least 23 American incursions into Mexico for various good reasons stemming from chasing Mexican Bandits to Indians. It raises the question as to whether the series claim that that Mackenzie was “secretly” ordered by the President of the United States to cross the Rio Grande when necessary to make the south west safe but if captured or known would be court martialed or hanged was just dramatic hyperbole by the show or a delusional claim by Mackenzie. In reality, he was order by Generals Grant and Sheridan to set upon and resolve the ongoing Texas predation by the Kickapoo Indians who had been invited into Mexico as a buffer. They told him, they would take the responsibility. They did not claim he would be disavowed and those instructions were personally conveyed by the Secretary of War Belknamp. . Arsenic based medicines were developed in the lasted 1880’s to help control the progress of the dementia but too late for Mackenzie, as was pyrotherapy, inoculation with malaria (to increase body temperature) and of course antibiotics. The apparent truth of this particular western series is that much of MacKenzie’s exploits throughout his career and especially will in charge of the southwest may have been due to progressive sphyillatic insanity which began years before and may even have influenced some of his civil war success.
