Grand Hotel was built in 1887 and opened its doors as a summer retreat for vacationers who traveled to Michigan by train, and then came to Mackinac Island via steamer and boat (per Grand Hotel). It features the world's longest covered porch at 660 feet, overlooking the Straits of Mackinac and the wondrous Mackinac Bridge.
During the first week of the season, Grand Hotel has a "soft opening" and opens its doors to visitors and allows you to wander the halls and view any unoccupied rooms and suites. Grand Hotel is also famous for being the location set in Somewhere In Time and features a Somewhere in Time Suite and exhibit.
