First time I head this song I cried very deeply, I was homeless not to long after my divorce and in the soup line at the Las Vegas mission battling opioid addiction.... I broke down in the line and wept bitterly. First time I didn't feel alone in my pill addiction, that someone else understood and reached out threw music....

I still have substance abuse issues, but now I have kids. I Work as hard to be the best dad I can and life is better than it ever has been. Life is fkin hard, to anyone reading this, we all hit jt for different reasons , but one day, Sooner or later, you’ll find your OG self and be a happy person. Macklemore deserves alot of the credit 😉

Crazy Spanda as a recovering addict I'll tell you that the only thing that helped me get clean was my desire to get my relationships with my siblings back. I missed them more than my own life. my big brother and I have our relationship back, sadly my little sisters have learned by example to use my short addiction as the family scape goat, and I can't have that kind of negativity in my life at the moment. just don't give up on your sibling, your faith in them may be the only thing keeping them holding on. don't love them to death, just be ready to move forward with them and not rub their face in their mistakes when they do try moving forward. 💕I'll always have hope for the addict who still suffers💕 good luck

i love this song. at my lowest, at my heaviest using i weighed less then a 5 year old child and i was oding at least once a month. and i would always get the same paramedics. the fourth time the paramedic actually helped me. he gave me the advice of a life time. i used for a month after i got out but i did sober up. and it really isnt dope moving back in with your parents after drugs and abusive relationship. that being said ive been sober for 5 years coming up this july. my message to anyone out there struggling is that, i know its hard. but you can do it. and even though it might not seem like it your parents or your family would be very heartbroken if they lost you to a drug over dose.

This song is a classic piece of music. He speaks nothing but the truth. We all have struggles in our lives they may be different but we all still struggle with something. Some big things and some minor things. If we come together as one and help each other out instead of being racist and only caring about yourself. If you help others you are the one who will be helped with your struggles and we just keep the chain moving. We aren't perfect by any means but we can see each other as they are perfect in their own ways. It's really not that hard to do. Better than being negative and in your own bubble because something didn't go your way instead of wiping them tears away and then helping someone else with a smile on your face and then wake up tomorrow to a new day and make it better than yesterday's. Good and bad energy is contagious so always keep good energy no matter what, that's how you stay strong minded with no worries in the world. Peace&Love yall. And goodnight!

It basically is the original "Otherside" but done with a modern rap sensibility. That's actually pretty cool, and it's done differently enough to give us a fairly unique modern rap song. Again, well done, Macklemore.

My biological mother walked out of my life because of her alcoholism...I haven't talked to since I was 9 (and I'm 19 now) she refuses to pay child support for those past 10 years and I found out I had a 1 1/2 year old half sister when I was 15 from Facebook. All I can hope for is that she gets help if only for her newest child because she was really irresponsible with my older sibling and I when we were growing up...I hope my half sister is treated better....but I have a great dad and a step mom who's basically my real mom, but my half sister won't have that

This sing hits home for me I began taking pills when I was 13, ironically oxy and dxm(which is cold medicine) and I became addicted to both for 6 years. I lost myself. The cold medicine cause a permanent dissociative personality disorder to where sometimes it's hard for to feel like myself or to actually feel my emotions which I guess in the beginning was the point since I took them to deal with the fact that I was sexually molested when I was 13 by my best friends parents and raped when thanksgiving when I was 18. All they did was bottle the feeling up inside until I od'd when I was 19. I almost died and all I could think was how I couldn't wait to get out of the hospital to get more pills. That is the moment that I realised how much help I needed so I called my mom. Today I am 10 months clean and I cannot even explain to you I feels to finally have my own mind and body back after over 6 years. I have a family that understands Me, friends that help Me, and someone I love who knows all my faults and accepts them as they are. This song keeps my going. It reminds me of the danger that going back causes. Cause I almost died in that hospital and I didn't care.

Sarah Anderson oxy and dxm were my docs too. I can relate so much to what you said about the dissociation with your self. Sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night and be so confused about my mind and body. It didn’t feel like I was “me.” Been clean off the oxy for 105 days and the dxm for a good 4-5 years. I literally had to move across the country to get away from the pull of the Oxys and my dealer. Opiates are strong but This song is powerful. I think we all need to take a hard look at our selves sometime.

I didnt want to die and leave them because of my addiction. Huh? Ohhh I see cause he's a white rapper cause I'm sure we would see Shady rap a song against syrup and that also speaks against marijuana.

thats whack man this is the second post ive read of yours dissing on macklemore. Bottom line is hes making good music regardless of where its from and intentional or not youre spreading negativity and hate through your messages. Try smoking a blunt and finding a little love and kindness within yourself.

markobarrows He used a staple fro. Rhcp because they were famous for under the bridge and other side is a rhcu song saying goodbye to the ones who lost that fight. Very fitting. He isn't eminem style rip off just says it as the guy says it. He got into it thinking it's was made them cool. That time Shady was on the same thing selling. He's Eminems demographic. 10 years younger. Very Seattle based and follow up history of the place. His music reflexes that. Fyi Mackelmore has released stupid things to "the penis song* for one

2 days clean today. I hit my rock bottom after 3 years of use. Lost everything I built in my life and now I'm crying all alone in this room knowing no can understand the hurt that made me take the easy way and the hurt I'm feeling right now trying hard to get clean. Sometimes I wish I OD'd when things were good and I would have never fell from grace.

This song is... surprisingly decent. I'm not one for rap, but Macklemore tends to surprise me. I'll admit, the beat and timing of the rap felt off, but the lyrics are good and ties in very well with the music and the song title. Not bad, Macklemore, not bloody bad.

This song is a true inspiration and a lyrical realization that .. there is so much more to life, to take it in and it is much more enjoable when youre sober. it teaches us to understand what can happen when you let something like drugs take over who you are. just LIVE ON - AND BE YOURSELF!

I remember listening to this song as a kid probably 12-13, I never understood what he meant by "we sell our dreams an our potential to escape through that buzz", the thought of a substance taking someone and ruining them was so foreign to me. I'm 22 now and completely get it. Great song.

If you want to get technical opium is a herb, i't's considered a drug because it has psychoactive properties, scopolamine is also a herb, tobacco and so on. Yes there is an increase of dopamine but through a very different mechanism in the brain. It's more comparable to eating food or a good workout. Yes people get addicted to things like this but the amounts of endorphins and all the other 'feel good' neurotransmitters you speak of that are released when consuming cannabis are more towards what your body will 'allow' per-say. Resulting in a more natural effect to your body physically, besides it's huge list of medicinal benefits. Sorry I thought this was common knowledge.

real good video. drives the message home. you're a target for people to make money from. they don't care about you or your family. don't be a target. keep your money and your life. I quit cold seven years ago this year. best decision I ever made. you can do it too. one day at a time turns into a year. make it to a year and you won't miss it...not by a damn site.

+Mike Gosnell I might only be eleven but alcohol has destroyed my family I know that much. Taken all our money, broke the relationship between my father and mother, my dad quit 2 years ago because he was afraid he would hurt his family. My mom hasn't. She always smoking, and drinks at least every other week. Your doing the right thing by trying to quit. It might not still be too late for you. My family is done. Right now I'm the only sane one in my house. My dad and sister fight almost daily. Mom hardly pays attention to her own kids. I'm the only thing holding my family together and because of that, because I've tried so hard to keep them from ripping each other's head off. That I am always the prime target for bullying from my sister and cousins. Ever since the day I was born I was hit and made fun of by my older siblings. The emotional onslaught that I had to endure has now rendered me emotionally and mentally defeated. My story may be a sad one, but. I hope you can use it well.😔

This song helped me out. I started drinking and smoking at 16 after my dad died. It took me till my graduation to throw away all the bottles and bongs and all the other drugs I had. I cleaned up and got a job so I could finally get the chance and make my dad proud. It has been 13 months since I touched even a drop, and I start this fall in college

I respect Macklemore a ton load. When he hears some story of children getting bullied or taking drugs, commiting suicide etc. he does something and writes songs to show awareness. example: same love was for some kid Macklemore heard of, and that kind died of suicide because he was being bullied for his sexuality. Thrift shop was for a kid who was bullied because of his clothes, then there's starting over and otherside which are for drug-abuse awareness. In my opinion Macklemore is an inspiration
