Here are fixes for ‘an error occured while preparing installation’ 1- instead of installing default config cmd+r, press cmd+opt+r install latest package. (Press while loading) 2- if os is installed already and you want to make update fix time and date 3- try healing up disk, or erase everything and install package

Did as was said, erased the HD and then went to reinstall MacOS High Sierra and have tried multiple times and always comes up with. ( the recovery server could not be contacted). I have internet connection. The major problem following this is I didn’t back up the laptop as it selling it but now I can’t reboot high Sierra and I can’t download a new version to reinstall it because the laptop no longer does anything but go on to the utility screen? Can you please advise.

You need to connect to your WiFi before you reinstall. Or better yet just hook it up using an Ethernet cable directly to your router . Problem solved

Select the disk choose the partition tab, select volume scheme and then click options.... so basically wiped out my laptop and can’t use it. I have a problem. I meant to wipe my MAC and didn't create a backup. Now the OS won't install from the partition copy. It had Maverick on it. What can I upgrade it too? It's a 2009 MacBook pro. Also where can I download a copy? The apple store won't allow it because I'm not using a MaC. Apparently, you have to have a mac to download an OS from the apple store.

Yup. So just create a temporary account - not a personal one- just a temporary account. That way the next person can test out the computer and if they are smart they will restore it and use their own Apple ID

I am curious too macintosh HD section of the hard drive stores user data so erasing it should not be an issue but if someone accidentally deleted the whole drive (top most with guid partition scheme) it would wipe out the os media image as well how would one reinstall the os in that case?

The reinstall gets stuck at macOS Sierra will be installed on the disk "Macintosh HD" when the bar reaches the end. Don't have another Mac to make a bootable USB. Never had any luck with any Mac recovery menu it sucks. Apple just needs to make an app that creates a bootable USB for whatever OS you want and have that available for Windows/Linux since you may not have another Mac on hand.

is what i got during search on this problem... and it worked... UNTRUSTED_CERT_TITLE during macOS recovery reinstall The Problem I dusted off an older MacBook to prepare it for a new user. The battery was completely dead as it had been sitting in my desk drawer for over a year. I let it charge for ~15 minutes before powering it on and holding Command + R to boot into recovery. Next, I clicked Reinstall Mac OS and was presented with a drop-down UNTRUSTED_CERT_TITLE. If you run into this try clicking Utilities from the top toolbar and open the Terminal. With the terminal open run the command date. If the date is incorrect, this is your problem! The Solution The easy fix is the set the correct time. Run ntpdate -u time.apple.com in the terminal and let Apple do the work for you. Run the date command again to confirm the time is now correct. Jump back to the Reinstall Mac OS and you should be good to go! NOTE: Be sure you have a network connection. Check Utilities -> Network Utility.

I didnt do a recovery beacuse i dont know how to do that at first. But this is what i did. First i shutdown my macbook then i press and hold the Command + r button then i click the disk utility then i erase everything on my hdd. Then after that its automaticaly shutdown. I dont know why. Okay. So when you were erasing the the hdd - it’s not normal for the Mac to just shutdown. You will need to hold command R - even before you turn on your Mac - hold it u til you see the Apple logo and the loading bar go half way. Than erase again and from there install the macOS .
