Ripley having a gun might be confusing. Percy is still canonically the inventor firearms. The fact that Ripley has attempted to make ones shows that she has been keeping tabs on Percy from afar. Matt said she took many testimonies from people who faced VM in combat to try an get an understanding of his invention

She'd also seen it in action. He was hunting her when he was arrested in Stilben and that's where the party found him. Which is about where the comics are up to. Hoping for a Volume 4 soon!

Vax was enthralled the very first time he met the Briarwoods back in Emon. Imagine how much Cassandra’s been charmed by Silas over and over again for years. She’s definitely not doing this from free will one way or another

Magic is involved but so is actual abuse and non-magical manipulation. Even Matt has said that magic played a factor, but it wasn't the only thing.

@@ShadowyFox_86 Stockholm Syndrome is a real thing in the real world. Imagine how much worse it is when you toss charm magic on top of it. How much easier would it be to gaslight someone when you have the ability to read their mind and create illusions on the fly?

Fun fact, in the original stream Vax pressed the button of his own accord thinking it would open the door, but it was to release the acid. The briarwoods in the stream were like 'oh, okay, did my job for me, thanks'

The fact that 95% of this was directly lifted from a real, actual D&D show is insane.

Ripley copied the idea of guns from Percy, it is indeed how she lost her hand. It didn't work as expected and exploded when she pulled the trigger

In D&D player character death is always on the table. There are ways around it with some spells. Also, Matt runs his games that criteria has to be met before the spell works. The other player characters have to role checks to raise and lower the difficulty of Matt’s role. In most home games the player will role up a new character that gets introduced into the story after.

3:10 notice how Cass's eyes are yellow here, not blue like her own? When she says ' _we_ 're only sparing you because you're useful' she's not talking about Vox Machina...

Ripley's first firearm malfunctioned, explosively, taking her hand with it. Originally, Trinket sat on her when a fight started, but she used magic to escape. We see much more of her in the animated version, which I appreciate. The crypt scene, on the other hand, is the one thing in this season I wish they hadn't changed. They were ghosts, not zombies, so it misses this exchange between Percy and Scanlan: "Which of my ancestors did you just shame to death... again?" "The one who possessed you." "Okay, fair." Cassandra... in the stream, the throat-slitting was retconned into an illusion (that our heroes wasted a healing potion on), but apparently that's not the case here. More importantly: even without vampiric mind control, she was a child that had been under the Briarwoods' thumb for years. It's only a matter of time before that amount of constant stress can break a person. She aided the first uprising, but betrayed the second. Meanwhile, Vax did escape the trap, but was in his right mind when he screwed up and triggered the acid. Can't blame them for changing that, heh.

The best lies have an element of truth. Somewhere, Cassandra felt resentment for being left behind - Just enough for the Briarwoods to get their hooks in and amplify that feeling.

Cassandra was 13 when she and Percy escaped. It's easy to see how a scared and tortured kid at that age would be resentful that her brother didn't come back to check if she really was dead or not after she was shot. Even if all that would have happened if he did was that Percy would have been recaptured too. The Briarwoods, skilled manipulators, took that resentment and reinforced it by both mundane manipulation/gaslighting and magical charms to ensure Cassandra would be loyal and see them as her family even when they had killed her real family. Ripley is quite an interesting character. A sane but very amoral version of the mad scientist in a way. All she really cares about is her research, and she doesn't mind hurting people to further it. Bonus point: Remember the bad dream Percy had in ep. 3? When he woke up one of his hands clutched the left side of his neck. Now you know why. Yeah, Scanlan usually comes through in some way. He's not the best in straight up combat, but the verstility of his toolbox and they creative ways he uses it means he's always useful to have around. Despite all the flirting and dick jokes. ;)

A little detail they don't explain in the story will make you hate Anna Ripley even more. There's a reason all the other de Rolo children are dead. Anna tortured all of them for information on the ziggurat's location. She'd torture one until they died or gave the information, and then she'd move onto the next one.

It has been scientifically tested and documented that stress can cause a person's hair to turn silver prematurely by messing with the hair follicles and the pigmentation production. The idea of stressful kids giving their mom grey hair is actually rooted in truth. (Pun not intended, but appreciated.) This is the principle behind why Percy has silver hair now, and in the flashbacks of his escape, but not during flashbacks to his childhood or in the torture flashback. The stress of the attack and especially the torture (which Ripley led) are what trigged the color change.
