If you don't have party lights, you can shine a flashlight onto a DVD disc behind the vase. the colours can be spectacular.

Earlier I tried with crystal vases and got decent abstracts...but adding the party lights effects takes the pictures to another level...thanks Ray for yet again a brilliant piece of informative video.

I have just found your tutorials on macro, I really want to learn this mode of photography as it intrigues me. I have a Canon 800D and am very new to photography not fully understanding the different functions, but I am practising and realise I need a lot more practice before I can get a truly satisfying photo. I have the Canon 60mm macro lens and a set of a cheaper brand extension tubes, unused as yet. I only tried my Macro lens out for the first time on sunday without much success, I am sure I will learn a lot from your tutorials and thank you in advance.

Hi Sharla. It is always wonderful to hear that someone is new to photography and wanting to learn. The truth is, even after decades of photography, most photographers are still learning and searching for new ideas and techniques. Sharla, thanks for your interest in this channel and I wish you all the luck in the world with your photography.

What are the odds? A few hours before you posted this video, I was turning the lights off in the house and as I was making my way to bed I walked pass our front door which has a textured/stained glass panel that was scattering the light coming from xmas decorations set up by a neighbor across the street. And I thought, well I need to take pictures of this one of these days. Your video makes me want to do it sooner than later. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on photography.

Well done and presented. Here’s a variation. Use plastic “crystal” between a backlit white polarized light source (like a TV screen showing an all white image) and a lens fitted with a polarizing filter. Rotate the filter until the areas around the plastic appear black in the cam evf or monitor and the crystal takes on colors. The colors are stress patterns embedded in the plastic from when the plastic was formed.

Hey Paul. You are so right. Great variation. This is what it’s all about. Thanks and have a wonderful weekend.

Fine as usual, Ray! Brilliant video! I'd like to tell you that using a garland with lights didn't come to my head. Instead I used the screen of my TV or computer as a BG and the results were interesting and unexpected sometimes...Thank you very much for the beauty you have shown in your shots and I wish you good luck and a happy weekend!

Great use of light Ray, got me thinking (again!) - dark hallway lit digitally by a series of your colour shots hung as a form of winter illumination, would look stunning anywhere with dark reflective surfaces, take care & keep well.

You can also surround the glass with black poster board or foam board and have white tape or stripes that will reflect into the glass along with the lights.

Another great video, with another amazing idea. I especially liked the black and white shot, which I found quite surprising considering the amazing colours you had shown us before. All my crystal is my late mother's which would make doing this one rather special. Canon make lenses, that are possibly better than the L 100mm f2.8 macro, such as the 400mm f2.8 or the 50mm f1.2, but I don’t think they have another that’s more universally popular. Except maybe the 50mm f1.8.

Hi Mark. As always, great to hear from you. I hope you are doing well. Thank you for such kind words. Well, you kinda have to do this project since you have your mother’s crystal. It will be special. Glad you enjoyed the black and white image. Yes, I do like my Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro. For the most part it performs admirably though that 50mm f/1.2 is a dandy from what I’ve seen though I don’t own one. Take care Mark.

It would be tough Bill unless your subject was very big or you intend to crop a great deal. Give it a try but it would be better to be able to move in closer. Good luck.
