Is it true the fancy arch bridge in the large rock cutting section was built to showcase the project, and they could have easily done without it?

That's going to catch so many people out . Dont think the owners of the Mills were too impressed either with the decision not to have access on the far side for westbound traffic

@@johnosullivan2026 "Everyone"? I have literally never once stopped at the Mills when going from Cork to Killarney or vice versa, either when travelling with family or with friends. And I travel that road a lot, due to a combination of a sporting interest and the fact that my better half has family in Killarney.

No hard shoulders on the new road? That's a serious design flaw. A speed limit of 100 Km/h will be hairy. Design would suggest 80 Km/h.

only thing its alleviated a lot of the heavy traffic through macroom other than that the roadway is dangerous with numerous accidents to date. the junctions [or lack there of] are simply atrocious in design, far too narrow for artics and dangerous to use... with no hard shoulder for emergency's & lack of access for locals - its done more to damage local trade than encourage it... something that was badly needed ruined with poor planning and implementation... like why all the stupid flyovers when simple [and likely more cost effective] roundabouts would have sufficed?

Flyovers are used as part of a practice known as Grade Separation, the purpose of which is to eliminate dangerous conflicting traffic movements. Segregated and Grade Separated expressways such as the Macroom Bypass are designed to channel long distance traffic via dedicated facilities thus largely eliminating such traffic (and conflicts connected therewith) from local roads.

maybe so and then put a slip road system in place that is pretty much an accident black spot already? (milstreet junction) with multiple accidents & near misses to date! There was plenty of ground available to allow for correct egress/ingress slip roads instead of the nonsense implemented.
