MACV SOG Black Jungle Fatigues Camouflage Effectiveness
In this video we will be looking at one of the unique uniforms worn by some members of the recon teams that were apart of MACV-SOG during the Vietnam War. That was was the dying of their standard issue jungle fatigues with black.
The purpose of this video is to explore history and provide the viewer a visual representation of what these uniforms looked like within the back drop of a heavily vegetated environment. Keeping in mind that these are the woods in North Texas and not the much darker triple canopy jungles of southeast Asia.

Nobody does it better. I wonder what this might look like if only a black and white filter was used. 3:39 I'd be dead so far, 3/3. 4:27 I did have you before the shot was fired. I pretend to aim and fire, and if I have a reasonable expectation my burst is going to connect, I call it a successful spot. 4/3. 5:14 5/3 cause I would have unloaded. Even the wind wanted to betray your position in that frame. I sometimes wonder if you're working in teams. Probably not. That wouldn't be to the spirit of the exercise, unless it is. 5:46 6/4 I'm very dead again. 6:23 7/5 dead again. That time the shadow manifesting in the center of the three trees caught my focus. I did scan to the left, but not before I would have fired; rather, I scanned to the left, and still fired. Those shadows are particularly tricky, and something feels unnatural about the whole of it; coming from behind the camera, from the left, somewhere around the 7 o' clock high position. Not only that, there's an artificial campsite in frame. 7:13 I would have fired first at the shadowed position where clearly someone has laid for quite some time, or took the time to impress themselves upon it. Lower right, right of the tree, just above and to the right of the gear you'd see in the YT window. I did however, recognize the real position before you fired. I still call that a win. 8/6. 8:12 Went with instinct. 9/6. Great work. Those woods are worked. Where they were, probably where they are, the winds are telling me something that my mind sees, and eyes cannot always comprehend. 8:31 Awesome. Friggin' awesome. Thanks again.

Whenever you were in a sunlit area, you were highly visible. In the shade, especially where there's a lot of foliage, is where this one was most effective.

Agreed, I think it wouldn't be terrible (not ideal in my opinion obviously) in those jungles. I think its best attribute is clearly the enemy confusion aspect.

@@gurugoguzhanson to add onto this, some recon teams made their point man use actual NVA fatigues produced by CISO. most notable example of this is RT West Virginia, which at one point or another, had the entire team running NVA uniforms.

​@@Brent0331I think that their main objective was to be confused with Vietcong wearing black pajamas, then came the triple canopy jungle concealment. Maybe the green fatigues (and gear)sprayed with black matte paint were the better camo.

I feel the face paint helps separate the "blackness" between the hat and shoulders. Once you know you're looking for a man in black clothing he is pretty easy to spot, but if you had know knowledge of their possible camos it seems like it would work well if you planned to be stationary for most of your expedition.

I like it. Makes sense along with the OD green gear as a break up. I have some slightly faded black gear for multi-purpose night use. Jet black is obvious without good cover, but it's about how the naked eye perceives color. IR at night picks up unnatural fabric more than the colour schemes.

No it isn't lol. Stationary person in all black camo in shade, darkness or against dark surfaces like mud or dirt is extremely hard to see. Bonus points if you wait for sun down. Extremely effective, always good colour. No camo will make you invisible. It just buys you time. I think you made up your mind about black camo before you even watched the video. Black is used in practically every military, and has been in use for 100 years, from WW2, to Vietnam, to the Cold War and even the war between Ukraine and Russia happening right now.

Perhaps if you did an addendum video in low light (twilight evening) the advantage of the black uniform might better show itself. The SOG teams didn't do anything that didn't work for long. Triple canopy can be pretty dark even midday. I really like your uniform videos. Even camo not perfectly matched to the environment can be effective if used properly.

Thanks, this is a one shot one kill video, I wont be doing another one. I think most people get the point, there's enough here to see that it can be effective in the areas where shadow is casted, and in areas of light it silhouettes. I think the enemy confusion factor was the primary reason for this uniform in my opinion.

Back in 1983 I was one of the original plank owners of a newly formed SWAT team for a Florida Sheriff's Office. SWAT teams were starting to come into play at that time. When we sat down and decided to equip our first team we were trying to decide a uniform to come up with. Camouflage BDU's at that time we considered to aggressive, and total OD Green we considered two military. The mindset was still civilian law enforcement. So we decided to dye the OD Green jungle fatigues black. What we did find out however that when they faded after the first couple of washings they went from a total black to that faded black look that were all familiar with that wasn't total black and wasn't Gray either. We found out through observation that they actually blended in better in darkness cuz even in darkness it's not total black and during the daylight in both Urban environment and in wooded areas that we had to respond to since even in daylight there are no black shadows but " fifty shades of Gray" if you will, and that coloration really worked well. Brent good video as always. Thanks brother, semper Fi. As a side note, back then I carried an M1A1 Thompson with 430 round stick mags and a 1911 45 made by Ithaca. Several years later we turned in on our weapons and got mp5s and Glock 17s. I truly nearly cried when I had to give up my Thompson. Sometimes you just can't beat old school or at least out of the heads of us old timers.

Great video as always Brent. There was a 2016 zombie movie called the Girl with all the gifts. It took place in the UK and all the British paratroopers featured were wearing Woodland DPM smocks with desert fatigue BDU's. It was a really effective combination. Since seeing that, I've experimented with several conceptually similar combos. I really like m81 woodland tops with m81-type gray "Urban" BDUs for low light conditions in a suburban area. Really breaks up the silhouette quite well. Maybe you could make a video exploring a similar concept?

if you look at old pictures of special forces in middle east you'll see a lot of people wearing woodland tops and Desert bottoms probably so your upper body blends with foliage and your lower blends with the ground

Never understood using the same pattern head to toe. Ends up looking not much different than any solid color. In general patterns should get lighter as they get farther from the ground, though that should be modified per the specific terrain.

Brent I have watched your vids. On camo comparison. I would like to see a series on hunting camo compared to military camo. Granted hunting camo is not made to mil.spec but I believe the colors and patterns may be more accurate.

Very cool. I think I’d still stick with the idea of if you’re wearing earth tones and standing or laying in a shadow then you will match the shadow but if you are in black and standing or laying in a shadow you become a super black figure and that’s no good. Like wearing black on a night op with a lot of moon light…bad idea.

I feel like I picked you out of the weeds on a pretty good amount of those shots, but I also knew 100% there is a guy hiding somewhere within camera frame so I'd pick a dark spot and hope I was right. If I'm just walking back from a patrol, you would have sniped me in every single one of the scenarios.

I think this is an underrated comment- yeah, when you pause the video and scan for him knowing he's in the picture, you'll find him. Now decrease time to spot to seconds, and increase search area by a 1000 times, while you're moving. Add in tired, fear, adrenaline, tunnel vision, injury with your own discretion. Camo is not an invisibility cloak. This isn't CoD where your green ghillie suit makes you invisible to the NPCs. It buys you precious seconds.

I recall that the human eye is better adapted to identifying motion. If I made the effort to not focus, but watch for motion, then I found that I did a better job at locating you. Otherwise it came down to looking for darkness that seemed out of place in the environment.

Yeah I think that's near enough 100% of the reason behind these, people forget MACV SOG was full of native Vietnamese soldiers who'd look exactly like a VC if they were dressed right as they were short and had indistinguishable silhouettes from that of a VC.

Honestly, there aren't many ticks in my area. Chiggers are the biggest pain in the ass where I am. I spray my uniforms down with DEET. Takes care of most chiggers and the ticks that are out there.

Too much available light for Black Camo effectiveness as I immediately saw any movement. Even at 5:00 was able to see you behind the bush, due to the black showing through. I do agree it would be quite effectiveness in darker woods and triple canopy.

No more effective than OD green and probably less so than that of at the time contemporary camos, camo patterns are affected by shadows too.

I recall people doing this in the early days with paint. Best colour for Night or Dark conditions DARK CHOCOLATE BROWN the Goldilocks amount of light absorbtion and shadow blending at night its invisible human eyes and I can see down into almost total darkness with no aclimatisation other than closing my eyes for a minute or two.

This episode of Find Brent was a bit unfair as all I had to do was look for the darkest spot. If I didn't know what you were wearing, it would have been a bit more difficult, and in a triple canopy probably impossible.

I picked up a set of black BDU's back in the early 90's. I thought they would be good for hunting. My buddies said I stuck out real bad - and they were hotter than hell ! I didn't use them very many times. It was one of the worse ideas I ever had ! LoL

Also, if your uniform looks like the enemy, and a local civilian (in a country you are not even supposed to be in) spots you, they might not report it as they assume it is fighters to which they are sympathetic.
