Warning: This is only my head canon, my reasoning out parameters as per sequence of unfolding events. Two enemies that became brothers then enemies again, returning to antagonism as Char sought to force maturity onto mankind. Forcing their growth through carnage and destruction in an attempt to distract himself from losing Lalah to Amuro and then to death itself. Amuro just wanted to wait for the natural awakening of man's potential so that Lalah's departed spirit could rest assured in knowing others will not suffer the same unnatural abuse she did as a natural born low level Newtype that was cyber-ebhanced to mid level status as she gained a 70% accuracy in remote sensing through the abusive methods of Dr. Flanagan. Amuro as a pre-Newtype(an Old-Type that had higher than average Newtype potential but is below the 50% mark of awakened potential) was never meant to awaken Newtype status. If anything, it would have been Amuro's children, as space born humans that could naturally reach borderline Newtype status and this generation's maturity would set up a baseline for his grandchildren to naturally attain low level Newype status without need for artifical enhancement. Thanks to Gundam, Amuro barely reaches borderline or Half-Newtype status via his first time piloting and he was gradually enhanced to low level Newtype or 60% awakened potential via an instinctive merging of his psyche with the Learning Computer in Gundam. The 60% mark of awakened Newtype potential is where Char was in their first encounter and Amuro only became that strong on the day Char used or tricked him and the Whitebase crew to kill Garma. In episode 23, Amuro reaches the 65% mark of awakened potential and finally became stronger than Char, allowing him to best the black tri-stars who collectively were Char's equal but separately inferior as they are just basic Ace pilots with the standard 30% awakened Newtype potential, meaning it takes 3 people at half his potential to rival his combat capability(though it seems a 70% awakened potential makes one 3 times more powerful than they were at 60%, the same discrepancy exists between 70 and 75 as the combat potential exponentially rises with awakening more potential). This growth to the point of Amuro's first Newtype flash, the power of insight granted is equivalent to Amuro leaping 3 generations ahead in unfolding the potential within his own bloodline and that, I say, is why his originally brown eyes mutated into an indigo blue by the time of Char's Counterattack(turned closer to aquamarine in the rewrite that is Gundam Origin, where they seem bent on making him a Newtype from birth, defeating much of the original message in Gundam regarding the struggle to transcend one's limits as you awaken the dormant potential within). After Amuro awakened his first Newtype flash of insight, Char only got further and further behind from that point in the story. That's partly because he was too narrow minded, just like Challia Bull told him but also because he wasn't granted Amuro's Learning Computer technology to indirectly optimize his nervous system and the "brainwaves" it produces. Other than his momentary power up in fleeing Amuro's persuit in Jaburo, it's only at the death of Lalah that Char was granted a power up that corresponds with Amuro's 65% awakened potential(potential which he gained via the process of defeating the black tri-stars) but that was too little and too late as Char experiences his first Newtype flashes of insight(the revised story in Gundam Origin grants Char this power through Lalah when he first rescued her) fortunately he entered the Zeong which had an even more powerful and direct boost to the psyche than Gundam's Learning Computer and this allowed Char's mere 65% Newtype power to reach roughly the same level as Amuro's then-90% awakened potential as the two fought to the point of destroying their machines in the closing days of December 0079, just before the new year arrives with the conclusion of the one year war. Warning: This is only my head canon, my reasoning out parameters as per sequence of unfolding events. In the Gundam Origin variant of the narrative, Char's 60% awakened potential was pushed to 65% whenever he was near Lalah and that is why he was able to experience the life saving Newtype Flash as he fought against and defeated Agha, the chakram weilding mystic from India. Newtype all have this ability to amp eachother's powers via harmonic resonance of their psyche, a resonance that is just like Amuro's temporary upgrade while he is inside the Gundam, only; Amuro was able to use this temporary upgrade like a catalyst to further refine his limits as he was driven to do so in the constant state of fight or flight that defines his 3 months of being almost always inside the Gundam and that is large part of why he suffers 7 years of "PTSD" right after the three months of artificial~forced maturity. 7 whole years to let his body fully acclimate to the otherwise unnatural growth~adaptation.
