In the two hundred and thirty eighth episode Lady Colin Campbell discusses the truth behind the BBC TV hit series, A Very British Scandal, which dramatised the disintegration of the marriage and the divorce of her father-in-law Ian Campbell, the 11th Duke of Argyll, and his third wife, the much-celebrated heiress-beauty Margaret, Duchess of Argyll; how the BBC's inattention to detail and contempt for the truth and accuracy resulted in a sloppy, downmarket version of what could easily have been a truly upmarket product; how their characterisation of the duchess failed miserably to achieve the heights of style, taste, discernment and chic for which she was known internationally; how the duke destroyed her reputation and turned her from one of the greatest style icons of the twentieth century into a reviled notoriety; reveals his motivation, which was entirely financial; discusses his drink and drug problems as well as his propensity for exercising his fists upon his wives; how the BBC traduced Margaret unfairly, portraying her as the instigator of the conspiracy to strip his two sons of legitimacy when in fact the duke himself was the architect of the whole scheme; how the duke believed that one of his sons' natural father was the last Tsar's nephew Prince Dimitri of Russia; how the BBC got both the substance and the details of the most notorious divorce in 20th century Britain wrong; how they could easily have got to the truth, had they wished to do so; what the truth actually was; how the duke hoped to get his hands on his father-in-law's vast fortune, firstly via his duchess and, when that failed, tried to do so through his father-in-law's wife; how he married a woman he called The Bet and used to joke about her paternity; and why Lady C found the whole series personally distressing and a wasted opportunity to redeem the reputation of a beloved stepmother-in-law who was destroyed by the Machiavellian financial schemes of her greedy, sociopathic father-in-law.

Thank you, Lady C, for setting the story of your mother-in-law straight! I could cry for what she endured. I have a similar sociopath in my family, and unless you have experienced it personally, one might not fully grasp the tremendous harm that they can do to innocent people with the intent on enriching themselves. There is no truer statement than "money is at the root of all evil." I'm so sorry for all you and Margaret had to endure. Love you, Lady C.

@@jackiellewellyn7841 There is some confusion. Michael Thornton has written that he was seduced by Margaret when he 17 (they remained friends). He said that Margaret and Lord Denning told him that the headless man was Douglas Fairbanks Jr. In this vlog Lady C said that it was not Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Margaret told her a different name of the headless person which Lady C mentions, I need to watch it again because I have forgotten. I did manage to work out the family relationships. I had not put 2 and 2 together and had not worked out that Lady C was married to the Duke's son (for a very brief period). I have finally thought of the very funny Lady C skit for SNL:. Lady C played by ? looks earnestly into the camera and begins a family network story, never missing a beat but the web of names and significance so intricate that it becomes an abstract blur. The sketch is over when absolutely zero comprehension is possible and she is smiling and petting Mickie.

Dear Lady C, thank you for your interesting commentary on the BBC programme "A very British scandal". Alas, it seems the Corporation can no longer make authentic period dramas; Claire Foy was more air hostess than society hostess. Furthermore, it seems they now feel able to play fast and loose with the lives of people who are still alive (or whose children/grandchildren are still alive). For all their "woke" posturing about "sexism", the BBC were just as happy as her odious husband to make money out of trashing Margaret Argyll's reputation. Best regards Louise

There is a series here on KZbin about various Scottish clans. Two of them I remember well. One was the Fraser clan. I believe it was the Highland Frasers who have historically been known as superb fighting men, and the Queen's favorites in this regard. The other clan whose story stuck out was the Campbells. I've known a Campbell or two, and settled in to hear some heartwarming tale of all their good deeds. HA! More fool me! The Campbells have long, long, loooong been known as the worst of scoundrels. Lady C has given those Campbells elegance and dignity they do not deserve. I've got to find that series and give it another watch, and I warmly recommend it to one and all. This was a very interesting story. Thank you, Lady C. for setting the story straight. Its nice to get information from someone who not only was there, but is impeccably honest and fair. Jane from Northern Calufornia. I so enjoy your factual and honest commentary. I look forward to tuning in to hear the latest updates that you carefully dissect in the answers to your audience. I especially love it when you break into an American accent when mimicking the ridiculous, pretentious Meggie. Thank you for all the time you take to keep us posted on fact & truth! Love to you. J

Dear Lady C, thank you for your amazing history lessons! You are like an encyclopedia! I love to listen to your information, and, to find out what really happened! I wish you would publish a book on how one's titles should be written, spoken, etc. It is hard to find correct information anywhere! Also, it amazes me the BBC did not know the difference between a Duchy and a Dukedom. It is simply incredible how much information you have stored in your head, and, therefore at your fingertips, so to speak. However, the BBC cannot even pay someone to ensure the titles, references to titles and the like, are correct. Downtown Abbey (the show) had its own historian and royal etiquette expert, and, the costumer and set decorators even sourced period pieces, clothing, etc., and, when none was available, had buttons fabricated to match those which would have been worn on the clothing of the day. One would think the BBC would take a page out of Julian Fellowes book, especially since there was one published with that very information! (The World of Downton Abbey by Jessica Fellowes, the niece of Lord Fellowes.) Please keep giving us historical and other other information, Lady C! You are a treasure, and, I look forward to your vlogs! Much love to you and Mickey. May God grant you a happy and healthy New Year!

Downton Abbey is a good tv drama and that's it. It has very little realism in it.

@@lepolhart3242 Actually, the costumes and set were exceptionally well-researched and replicated for filming. The etiquette coach was also a movement and speech coach, as well. There is an entire special outlining his work. It has aired on PBS many times.

@@gigiray7413 that's all they did get right. It doesn't take an einstein to work out. For example the servants are always spotlessly clean from the scullery maid to the cook. The reality was some servants would have been filfthy from their job as they worked extremely hard. They had very little free time working 18 hour days. They were not allowed to have casual conversations with their employers as they only spoke when spoken to. It's all written down in etiquette books at the time. They were expected to give their employers "room" if they were going about their duties and a member of the family seen them in a corridor. The servant would hide behind a curtain or door or they would have to face the wall and pretend they weren't there. When Anna the house maid gives an opinion to Lady Mary in one episode it could have gotten her fired in reality as it wasn't allowed. There are many stories of employers treating servants badly but the servants couldn't do much about it. History has been whitewashed. Some employers were better than others and that's it.

Utterly fascinating!!! I did watch the programme. I remember the headlines of the an Argyll divorce around when I was having my babies and not paying much attention to the wider world so was curious. I think I shall watch it again now, having heard your more factual chat. Like having a gossip with a friend. I now know two things. 1. Mrs Thatcher was wrong “Greed is not good”. 2. What a good thing The Pill has been. If I were not watching the H&M thing I would not easily believe people could be so heinous. And you are able to set both sagas in place. Many many thanks……most enjoyable in every respect.

An honest and factual depiction of Margaret's life after her divorce would be of much greater interest to me than the salacious twaddle shown over the Christmas period. What a journey of the spirit! What a blessing it must have been to be one of her friends. A true aristocrat.

Thank you, lovely Lady C. for sharing your experiences with us. I am grateful to know the truth behind these "docudrama" put out by the BBC and others. One of the others put out by the BBC, "The Crown" has been so appalling that I no longer can tolerate watching it! I am of course, not an insider like you, but I have read enough books (including ALL of yours) about the Royal Family and others that are related to them, to know that 90% of the context of that particular docudrama is, as you say, rubbish! Thank you for setting things straight!
