I consider this movie to be less of an action film and more of a psychological thriller. Hugh Keyes Byrne changed his accent for every scene hes in as toecutter to further show the insanity of the character. Max talks about how hes scared of becoming like the bandits and psycho on the road and that the only thing separating them from him is the badge. And at the very end he is a crazed man chasing people down in a stolen police car, just like the Night rider at the beginning.

This movie was originally supposed to be a modern-era film about a journalist and what he sees on the job and how it destroys him. The thing is, they didn’t have the budget to film a bunch in a big city. So, they made it a post apocalyptic movie and filmed it basically in the middle of nowhere. And it created one of the coolest franchises ever
@goldleader60743 жыл бұрын
There's really no indication from this film by itself that it is post-apocalyptic I mean there's electrical power, TV broadcasts, businesses open (gas station diner where Goose was eating and that nightclub, ice cream shop, car shop), a legal system that's still intact with courts and police, and hospitals. Now granted the biker gang is pretty out of control but the post-apocalyptic vibe doesn't really show until the next film.

What's cool is that this film sets up Max's descent into literal 'Madness' by the time we see him in Fury Road. He's so dead inside at the end of this film that when we see him in MM2 he doesn't even want to have any connection to any living being at all, he'd rather form a connection with a dog but he didn't even give it a name, it's literally called "Dog". In MM3 his madness went even further, there were cut scenes of him having nightmares about his wife and hallucinating all kinds of crazy stuff when he was out in the desert without water (some of it made it to Fury Road in the scene where Max wakes up from a nightmare in the War Rig). And then in Fury Road (which takes place after MM3) he's just reduced to an animal with a single instinct "survive", full blown PTSD, hallucinations, hearing voices, seeing things you name it.

Tom Hardy's character has nothing to do with Mel's classic one. Why the need to shoehorn ridiculously overrated CGI reboot into a known continuity? I'm so glad no one but George Miller has done the Mad Max films. This has been one of my favorite film series since I saw Road Warrior on TNT as a kid. Anytime I played with my GI Joe figures my headspace was in the Mad Max universe. I had so many convoy chases with my vehicles. Great times. This first film is a quieter film and has some slower pacing but a lot of that was budget restraints. Still though, for a smaller budget, they still handed in an awesome movie. But the real post-apocalyptic Mad Max universe doesn't really kick off until Road Warrior. It's such an influential film and it created one of my favorite subgenres with post-apocalypse. I still think that kind of world could still exist. And the Mad Max films are very synonymous with excellent stunt work. Stunt people really get their time to shine in these films. There's always such good dedication to the performers in Miller's directing. Even though part 3 is a little odd, it's still an entertaining film. Can't wait to see your reaction to Road Warrior, you're going to absolutely love it. It's one of my favorite films of all time, and that's saying something from me. Fun Fact:Hugh Keays-Byrne(R.I.P.) played Toecutter in this film and Immortan Joe in "Mad Max:Fury Road" so he was both Mad Max`s first and final main villain!

There is so much I want to talk about with this film, being Australian, and Victorian too. The suspense and parts left up to your imagination is Hitchcock like. The shot with the raven is definitely a homage to Hitchcock. With the organisation, you kind of have to let it go, this was made on a small budget and it's amazing what they achieved. It was the record grossing Australian movie for many years until Crocodile Dundee came along. Croc 1 still holds the record for the highest grossing independent film in the world ever. It's also worth mentioning that Mel and Steve Bisley (Goose) graduated from NIDA together (National Institute for Dramatic Arts), the most prestigious acting school in Australia, if you will. Judy Davis attended in the same year/s, so that says something.

I wonder if toecutter got his name from cutting off his toes because when you see him walk or run he has a limp ?
@warpig49423 жыл бұрын
Pause at 1:38 to notice The Night Rider has "DEATH" tattooed on his toes. George Miller wrote extensive backstories and stuck in corresponding details for even minor characters all through the Mad Max series.

The first time I saw this movie was on SCI FI in 1999, celebrating Mad Max's 20th Anniversary, restored in it's original 2:35:1 widescreen format. I even watched Mad Max 2 on the UPN network in 2001, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 2002 on AMC.

Fun fact about Australia: While production of the Ford Falcon ended in the US back in the '60s, it has continued in Australia to this day. The Last of the V8 Interceptors is an Xb Falcon, which we never got.
@user-uj2li2dh6m3 жыл бұрын
That's wrong. They stopped making Australian Falcons in 2016.

I always understood all of these movies to be like tales that were told around a campfire. The world that we know is gone but Max is a legend of the wasteland to those that are left. A symbol of a hero in a Mad world. As long as the character hits all the same points such as the V8 Interceptor, the double barrel shotgun, the leathers with a pauldron, and a leg brace you can tell any Mad Max story and it will fit in the world that George Miller created.

So much respect for people that appreciate this original masterpiece. Part 2 is phenomenal as well, and I think you'll see tons of people recommending that, and they're right :)

Great review! Can't wait to see the next two Mad Max movies. By the way, did you recognize the shotgun Max was using? It's the very same one that will be in the other 3 movies. ☺

When "Mad Max" was originally released in the US, it was dubbed with American voices. The Australian accent, I read later was not considered 'normal' for our domestic ears, harsh and unusual. Even after "The Road Warrior" was a cinema hit, here and around the world (Where it's title was MAD MAX 2) -The most common version of MAX 1, that was found on cable channels was the US-voice-dub'. Only When MAX1 had a quality vhs, after "Max 3 -Thunderdome", was the Australian dialogue available here in the States. While DVD's and Blu have audio tracks, to feature other dub's, I've not found one that has the American overdub.

MM was released in Australia, and much of the world in 1979. America got it in 1980 with the overdub. Wiki' says that slang used in this film, all understandable in Australia, also received an American 'translation". MM2 or "The Road Warrior" arrived in 1981. My Dad took me to the cinema to see it. I was 12. Film was R' rated. Dad and Son enjoyed it so much, we later saw "Thunderdome", and "Fury Road" together at the cinema, too.

Another reason why the film was re-dubbed and with a new sound mix was because the original sound mix of Mad Max wasn't all that great. The music was too loud, the dialogue was too quiet, sounds were jumping at the audience left and right. Understandable because the film was partially mixed by Byron Kennedy - the film's producer and he didn't have much experience with it. So when the film ended up in America they not only fixed some sound issues, they re-dubbed all Australian english with American english.

The "Interceptors" were former taxi cabs that were beat to $hit...so the low-angle filming, close to the road surface...made them look fast. They did this film on no budget and there are lots of stories from George Miller and his crew why they could never make this movie now, due to the huge cost that current safety regulations would require...and I don't think you can buy surplus rockets from the Australian Navy any more either...
@EfftupSmith3 жыл бұрын
only the one you actually see smoking (the XA) was a taxi, the other 2 yellow ones were ex cop cars.
