The flashback is of the child Glory. There is a backstory to this movie with Max going to Gastown to compete in Thundedome Plus (a new Thunderdome in Gastown) to get a V8 engine for his car. He is helped by Hope(Glory's mother) and wins the thunderdome, but a group of buzzards (the guys with the spiky cars) steal his car and leave him for dead. Glory was kidnapped by buzzards so her mother Hope helps Max survive and begs him to save her daughter. Since he's going after his car anyway. He gets the car back and saves Glory and reunites her with her mother, but as he's leaving them the buzzards come back and run them over. Four comic books were released around the time Fury Road was in theaters, and they contain backstories for Max, Furiosa, Immortan Joe and Nux (Nicholas Hoult's character) and they're all worth reading if you want some more context to the movie. There is a collection called Mad Max Fury Road Graphic Novel which contains an extra chapter on the origin of the war rig. You can find it by googling the title and read it free online. There is also the new Furiosa movie which came out this year that fills in even more gaps. It's well worth the watch and explores a lot more of the wasteland.

The film was marketed as being all practical effects and no CGI to generate buzz, and it definitely worked-people still claim “this has no CGI” to this day. Of course, that’s not entirely true. I'm pretty sure Charlize Theron wasn't so committed to the role that she had her arm amputated. That said, the claim isn’t baseless. A significant portion of the action was done practically, unlike most modern action films where everything is CGI. For example, the War Rig crash at the end-where you noticed the obvious CGI-was actually filmed in-camera. They drove and crashed a real rig. The CGI was added afterward to enhance certain elements, like the deeper background, objects flying in the foreground, and the usual post-production tweaks for color grading and tone corrections. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the heavy layering of CGI and color grading over those practical stunts sometimes makes it harder to appreciate that what you’re seeing was largely done for real. The balance between practical and digital effects gets blurred. Still a great film, though.
@MegaSting1981Ай бұрын
Yeah it worked better in Fury Road than in some aspects of Furiosa. I like Furiosa, but there's some practical stuff in that, that looks more like CGI because the cinematography isn't quite as precise in some scenes so it shows out the digital aspect of it more.
@craigo1981Ай бұрын
For me it's the way CGI should be used, as a support for practical effects, to touch up or add small details. It's when movies use it to do almost everything that just looks crap. IMO. This film is still an amazing example of practical effects and stunt work though, even if it's not purely without CGI.
@te1013Ай бұрын
Are you sure you got that rent out of your system. CGI is used smartly in this film. The practical stunts were done in camera and that’s what the tout was all about. Jeez “literal” has lost all definition.

20:59 is one of my favourite moments in the movie, I heard that the anguish that Charlize Theron portrays was completely real after spending so much time in the desert filming, and it shows. Seeing it after watching the Furiosa film only makes it more painful too, knowing what she went through to get back to her home only for it all to be in vain. And the crescendo of the music is just the icing on the cake. Has me on the verge of tears every time I watch it.

@t20:05 they are spraying fuel into the air intake for the engine's air compressor attached to a supercharger. The idea is that you increase the fuel component of the fuel to air ratio and it equals a bigger boost. This isn't really the case. The optimum ratio of fuel to air is dependent on non-linear chemistry and physics. Spitting fuel into a carburettor or supercharger won't increase the output, it's likely to flood the cylinders and cause the engine to misfire. That's why they don't have bonnet bunnies doing it at Summernats. Having made myself a bit of a Poindexter, I recommend you forget what I just wrote and just see it as them supercharging their superchargers.

At the end Nux said "Witness me" he wanted them to witness him sacrificing himself so he could get into Valhalla. Meanwhile, Capable extended her hand and held it to her heart, the Many Mothers signal for holding someone in your heart. Even though Nux still believed in the religion that he had been born into that used elements of the Norse idea that a warrior who died in battle would have an afterlife of eternal war and glory he used that belief in the end to do good. This film highlights the stark contrast of hyper-fueled machismo with feminine compassion for others that eschews war, hence Anghrad calling bullets anti-seed "Plant one and watch the thing die." Most of the driving scenes are practical save for the stuff like the last crash and the huge storm, but they built and drove the cars in most scenes.

The sandstorm is all digital, and the gardens on top of the mountains at the start surely as well. Charlize Theron had a green glove under her metal hand, and they did reverse green screen to make it see-through. And the stuntmen and explosions were filmed separately and then later composited into a single image. I believe the rest of digital touch-ups is just color grading.

The flashbacks are never explained. Presumably some other Max adventure... I'm a fan of the 'Max as myth' theory - that these men aren't the same person, Max is just a name given to wandering heroes of the wasteland. And like Max, his car is always the Interceptor (even though it is destroyed in Road Warrior and again here 😅). So to me, Tom's character has been so traumatized he may not even realize he isn't Max, but believes he is because of the stories. We never get his backstory because ultimately it's Furiosa and the wives' story, and the strange man who helps them is just another broken Max wandering in and out of legend.

The spraying technique with the fuel into the intake increases power as the fuel is a mist and burns more efficiently than if it were just poured in through the carburetor. This is why your car has fuel injection. Imagine them spitting fuel into the intakes as a poor man's fuel injection.
@FlesharrowerАй бұрын
Absolute nonsense. Fuel in a carb is aerosolised, just like a fuel injector, fuel injection is just more precise. In a fantasy world like this it works because it looks cool. In reality, the first thing stopping any extra fuel reaching anything via the blower trumpets would be an air filter (all that desert sand blowing around would kill a motor faster than an exploding spear). Second, any fuel getting in there would suddenly make the air/fuel ratio spike to the rich side, actually losing power. Third, the Roots type superchargers they are spitting fuel into compress air, the amount of air sucked in depends on the engine speed, the fuelling needed at a certain rpm for the correct combustion to occur to make peak power is already programmed into the control unit metering the fuel flow. Spitting more fuel into the intake would be a "surprise" for the fuelling system, making it run less, not more efficiently, producing less, not more power.

I'm going to just say it, this movie sucks. Yeah amazing action, great cinematography etc but this isn't Mad Max. This is to Mad Max what the Karate Kid with Will Smith's kid in it is to the Karate Kid. This really loses the heart of the original movies. The low budget high intensity is what makes the original Mad Max films excellent. He's just a guy trying to survive in some of the harshest terrain imaginable. I think often when movies go for spectacle, they lose the heart of what made the originals as good as they are. This is not the best movie ever made. Hell, Waterworld is better than this over produced shite and is far more Mad Max. Apart from the car chases and the cinematography, this movie has so little going for it. I guess you could say it is an alternate reality or something but it still doesn't really excuse it. If you like it, cool. If you think it's the greatest movie ever made, knock yourself but this isn't Mad Max.
@LordVolkovАй бұрын
"I have no idea what that technique is..." Nux and Slit are turbo-charging the supercharged engines 😅 By spraying/spitting fuel in, they add aerated gas to the engine (same effect as a modern turbocharger) which boosts engine power. The supercharger then compresses this mix (but Nux puts in too much fuel and blows the engine😅)

The video l watched of Quinton Tarratino he said he hated this movie and didn't bother watching it long after release because, "What is a MAD MAX movie without Mel Gibson". He did really enjoy it after eventually watching it. The movie he loves in the franchise is the original.
