This is one of my favorite scenes from the show because it's like watching poetry on screen. The writing, the humor, the Christmas feeling and the fact that they are talking not only about themselves but each other; it's literal perfection.

One of my favorite Mad Men scenes of all time. This show is in dire need of more Don/Joan scenes! I think Joan and Peggy are the two who have the best on-screen chemistry with Don, but in different ways, of course. I'm not gonna lie, there's been moments I caught myself wishing there was something romantic between him and one of those two, but at the same time I feel it would ruin things. Don and Joan always seem like such good friends, we just never see them together often enough.
@mwendwa824 жыл бұрын
True. I wish we had more scenes of them together.

In the final season when Don tanked the deal that cost Joan a cool half mil in 60's cheddar, and she turned on him, was heart breaking. I get that it was a lot of money but Don always treated her well and tried to stop her from whooring herself to that fat slob Herb for the Jaguar deal. Joan should've treated Don better but that is why the writing on this show was so outstanding it went down different paths and didn't just do easy most of the time.
@dianahan6727Ай бұрын
@@Xiphos0311I feel the same way, and dislike how Joan turned back to Don in the final season only because she lost the money! Don always treated her with respect and even brought her flowers after this scene.

There is a Mariana Trench level of unspoken things between them in this scene. It's just so dense and so good. This and Breaking Bad are living proof that TV has stepped up drama big time.

I'm struck by how different Don's relationship with Joan is from the other women in his life. He's the only woman he seems to regard as an equal. The two seem to have a genuine mutual respect that they don't share with anyone else. I can imagine them getting together and forming their own agency--maybe as a married couple. I think Roger and Pete are going to self-destruct by the end of the series.

Don and Joan act as equals because Joan does a great job in her work. She takes it seriously and never fails. Don also likes Peggy although he his harder on her. It's not a secret that men respect women when they perform as well as themselves. It's not like Don likes any man that he thinks is worthless either.

The subtext is way more interesting in seasons 4 & 5. In season 5 we get to see a brand new marriage between Don and Megan (which shows how he probably was at the beginning of his marriage to Betty). I agree the plot SEEMS light, but the character depth and development is second to none to everything on television. We see Pete slowly dissolve into a disillusioned marriage much like Don and Roger. Peggy finally escapes the shadow of the "old boys club" and gets out on her own. An amazing season.

Don has never gotten with Joan... this scene states that fact pretty definitively. Not only because of what is said between the two characters here, but more importantly because his desire to fuck the shit out of Joan becomes the impetus for his brilliant "At Last, Something Beautiful You Can Truly Own" pitch to the Jaguar people later on. It's a little confusing, but it's all there in the details.
@southshore51612 жыл бұрын
Definitely, couldn't agree with you more. Mad Men, like The Sopranos, has gotten more "difficult" and obscure as the series has progressed... but it's becoming all the more cerebral and rewarding at the same time. IMO, watching MM just to see how the plot unfolds is a waste of time. The story they're telling us is all in what the characters and scenarios are supposed to represent symbolically, and under it's period-piece soap opera exterior there is something beautifully dark and deeply nuanced.

Don is delusional if he thinks Megan is better than Betty. re watching seasons 1 through 3, Don was so in love with Bets. I miss them together. they had better chemistry. But I could understand why Don is happier with Megan. He was able to tell her the truth and she accepted him. When Matt Wierner said it was Don's lie that made him cheat I was confused about it until I realized that his lie made him miserable and he seems to only cheat when he's unhappy despite how happily married he is.
