@Dani25 The Brits 1 and 6 Commando who did get issued Garands in WWII absolutely loved it, and refused to turn it back in and return to their Lee Enfields. And even the Bloke has stated numerous times that no matter how fast he could shoot the Enfield, the Garand was still the one he would be taking into combat!

Fantastic Mad minute. Not much muzzle rise so great gun control and bolt manipulation. I love attempting this. I prefer hand-loaded ammo using PPU brass. It feeds reliably and I use a reduced charge to minimise barrel wear and recoil. I also use older pattern charger clips (not sure which maker) as they grip the rounds more gently

I know that this will sound strange but I was taught to ALWAYS use a sling when shooting because it gives you more control. I'd just like your views on this. I fired the SMLE No4 & Enfield No8 in the ACF with slings & even when I joined the REME I always used a sling when shooting either a No8 or L1A1 & even an Sterling SMG.
@BlokeontheRange
@BlokeontheRange 6 жыл бұрын
Sling supported shooting has no place on the battlefield (aside from snipers). Distracting, restricts your movement massively, and it's something else to worry about. Plus, with some rifles (L1A1 in particular) it affects the point of impact quite massively (I tested this out pre-BotR). And I shot for YEARS before ever learning to shoot without one.
@nige601
@nige601 6 жыл бұрын
@@BlokeontheRange I never found using a sling that restrictive when on a CQBR but then again I wasn't an infantryman. I just find it strange that I was taught to use a sling as a standard, then again I was a decent shooter. Thanks for your insight on this

Gday Bloke. I also have a 1918. Was looking at restoring it to full wood military spec as it has unfortunately been sporterized! To test its accuracy I put a scope on it as it already had the mounts for some load development. After many trials with hand loads it can put them into 1 1/2 inches at 100m. Do you think It would be worth risking that accuracy to restore to mil spec? Happy to send a photo of test group. Thanks for a great Channel! Cheers, Glen

In my experience my no 4 is faster than my no1. I also shoot my no 4 5x as much as my no 1..... I believe the pre ww1 tolerances on my no 1 and the wartime tolerances on the no4 effect this greatly.

My SMLE is 1918 and is a rebuild, and is much slicker than my 43 Longbranch No.4, which is still kinda crisp.
@theol3199
@theol3199 6 жыл бұрын
I've noticed on my buddy's Longbranch the action is "crisper" while my fazackerly no 4 the action is looser, yet smoother. Both of these rifles hate almost all factory ammo and key hole terribly. Reloaded ammo and they shoot spectacularly. My no 4 is my favorite milsurp rifle.
@theol3199
@theol3199 6 жыл бұрын
Lilac Tortoise very possible. I only use my no1 with new ammo to get brass to reload for the no4. It could also be a type of preservationist mindset with the old no1. The actions are similar in design, yet feel so different too.

Considering the Enfields always had 10 round magazines, why didnt the british ever make 10 round chargers for them?
@BlokeontheRange
@BlokeontheRange 6 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't work. Too much friction. Plus they'd be huge and unwieldy, and remove one of the major advantages of 10 round mags with 5 round chargers - you can reload at any time when there's 5 or less in the mag, rather than having to wait until empty or screw around with loose rounds.

I declined your kind offer cos you're in the US and underestimated exactly how much it would cost to get it to Switzerland - we're currently importing something and the US fees / shipping / paperwork alone are about $800. Add in another $240 of paperwork and import marking fees at our end, and it would have cost us more to accept a donation sight-unseen than to buy one here.

In private sales, SMLE's go for about $400 to $600 here, depending on condition. Sometimes a bit more in shops. There is no tax write off here. I'm looking at a beater at the moment for $330, from a shop. Looks like a dog, has a good barrel on it though.
@BlokeontheRange
@BlokeontheRange 6 жыл бұрын
As I said, your offer was very kind. However I'm not exposed to either Irish or US prices (no SMLE's were made in Ireland, btw). And re. tax write-offs, Swiss tax law doesn't work like that. Donations are not taxed as income since Schenkungssteuer is a separate system.

I have no logical reason why other than mine's been in my family since the 60's, so I've had it all my life really and the action is stronger and feels more natural when I hold it. I don't have a mosin but I have a mk3 from 1916 without mag cutoff and a Sauer 1936 k98k. The mauser feels better and that's really the matter between life and death. When buying a pistol for example the one that feels better and is reliable is what you want not what's popular. I do concede that my mk3 is the better rifle but my mauser is far sturdier.

Jefferson Graves the Mauser having a stronger action is a myth
@jeffersongraves5295
@jeffersongraves5295 6 жыл бұрын
No it's been well proven the locking lugs in the front are stronger and the bolt has a gas vent in case of a ruptured cartridge case. If I remember correctly the Enfield p14 and m1917 both had mauser type actions and the Springfield 03 did have a mauser type action. Most American sporting rifles used the mauser type action up until the mid 60's. My mk3 is the only gun I've ever shot with the locking lugs at the rear of the bolt.
