Try lighting wet thermite with a bit of dry thermite next to the fuse. You'll have greater chance of success.

I think using something other than a sparkler to light it off would work as well, something that either burns hotter or is self-oxidising. Too bad a magnesium strip isn't an option, with the water being in there.

If you seal the thermite-Ball and have some Magnesium as fuse you could even light it under whater using some elektricity.

Isaac Torres Well, the reason fire doesnt work under water is because of the lack of oxygen. so same with nitrogen. Thermite Burns because the oxygen is in the rust.

Well if the sparkler can dry just a tiny bit of the thermite you would get a initial mass or something like that. That bit off dry thermite would probably burn so hot that the thermite around it would dry too and then react. So you would need a longer and hotter burning sparkler and then you woul get the normal reaction.
