Francesca Annis was the perfect combination of brains beauty all the other parts were well acted especially Tom Conti giving such a selfless performance and Ray Smith who could step into any role or character type and be convincing. His work and contribution seemed to have been forgotten in the passage of time though. Much better then any of the upper class garbage that passes for quality drama on the BBC today or any other of these period dramas which have been taken over by old Etonians and the offspring of the rich and famous and have all the soul and conviction of a palace play. Thanks for the priceless upload.

@kerryhorwitz40936 ай бұрын
Thank you for introducing me to antimatalism. I had to leave your comment and do a bit of research. I admit I had never heard of this philosophy. It is an interesting idea to conquer death by no longer producing life. This clashes with my own Catholic view that life is the education of the soul. This is considering the subject assuming it is possible. Antinatalism would first require the removal of love, maternal desire, and passion from the human constitution, which would be necessary if such a philosophy could take root in human existence. Antinatalism has to be predicated on the idea that human life has no meaning. If Catholicism is correct, human life, with its suffering and sorrow, hones the soul for a life beyond this one like a sculpter hones his slab of rough marble into a statue of great beauty and meaning. It also fixates on the suffering of life and omits consideration of its joys. I only had a small overview of the subject, but it has been interesting...

It's interesting comparing this version to the earlier American version with Jennifer Jones. Francesca Annis portrayed her as a hard-edged cunning, manipulative narcissist, whilst JJ projected a poignant victim of her own passions, destroyed by her two lovers' deceit and exploitation. I thoroughly enjoyed watching both versions. Thank you!

I think the narcissist version is closer to the novel's original intent.
@chrispiazza95442 жыл бұрын
My take from the novel was that Emma was a little of both. I found this version so much more compelling than the American version which was really trash. But Annis is harder than my memory of Emma from the novel. Yes, she's very manipulative and narcissistic but Flaubert also wrote her as almost a victim of her own passions and naive, almost childish immaturity. In the writing he fleshes out this conflicted character. I can't imagine trying to portray it as an actor. So difficult. Annis was also led by the director who chose this interpretation. Bovary is such a fascinating character because of her contradictions. I really felt this was such a modern novel for it's time and it's sympathy for women quite astounding. You don't get that sense from this performance but in the novel it's quite clear that Flaubert sympathized with this creature he was also analyzing in her shallow blossoming and profound degradation.
@leapinglaura7343 Жыл бұрын
@@chrispiazza9544 I agree with your take, Chris, and apparently the French people did, too, since they were so scandalized by Flaubert's sympathy for his protagonist, that they wanted the book banned :))
