Jake Munro is known to be as a common problem with the subculture or the scene. He continuously brings up misconceptions about the goth subculture and it really rubs a lot of us the wrong way. Whenever we want to respectfully correct him, he calls out elitism and gate keeping. The truth of the matter is that goth is a music-based subculture. Hell, you see people back in the 80's with colorful hand me down or thrifted clothing. Not everyone wore black those days. I've seen several of his reaction videos where he spreads info that is demonstrably false. To me, I've concluded that he simply doesn't know what he's talking about.

A buddy of mine sent me a few of Jake's videos to watch a while back. I remember two things that he said and they really rubbed me the wrong way. 1) He believes music made in the 80s was of low production quality, and "that's why music today is better." I'm 57. I had friends in the 80s and 90s who didn't know who Sisters of Mercy were! I'm sure they still have no idea. I live in metro Detroit, and did then as well. Big music market and I don't recall SoM being played on the radio. They were pretty much an MTV band in my area.

I watched a video of his once and he was going on and on about how he was one of (if not the only) goth when he first discovered the scene in his area. He acts like he invented goth and nobody understood him and he’s literally that guy who says “I was listening to so and so band before anyone else even knew who they were.” I’m over 10 years older than he is and I promise you I was in the scene (In the US at the beach where there WERE approximately 2 other people I knew that weren’t wearing boardshorts and Oakleys) before its even remotely possible that he was unless he was listening to underground tapes before he learned to tie his own shoes. (Do they make toddler sized Demonia? Let me know.) He gatekeeps, and not well, as he doesn’t even know what to claim as his own because his basic music and knowledge of the scene are pretty poor. I also notice that he’s seemingly transitioning to a slightly more “bland” style lately. He’s the guy that is the reason people always said what we were doing was going through a “phase”. Even my dad (hes 60 y/o) are not familiar with 80s goth music when I played the songs in front of him. My dad listens to 70s and 80s stuff but none of the genres he listens to sounds similar to the goth bands I showed him. So yea he was so confused on how the goth bands sounds 80s yet “alien” to his ears like hes trying to figure out what genre was it XD

Keep being positive and creative and don't give these types of people a bigger audience. I've been listening to Sisters since the ACTUAL 80's and my dad has most likely heard them in the background a bunch of times and he would at the time and NOW have no clue, even though my teenager room had tons of posters. My dad to teenager me: "what's Skinny Puppy?" Me: "It's a band" Dad: "Skinny Puppy is a really dumb name for a band". :)

I grew up in the 80s and Sisters of Mercy wasn't a popular band back then. It was a niche band that got played on MTV on cable now and again and U68 Here in New York (before it became the Home Shopping Network) and occasionally on the Z100 radio between Madonna, Michael Jackson and WHAM! Duran Duran got more play than Sisters of Mercy back in the 80s. Jake Munro has been creating drama with Goth KZbinrs for some time now. He looks to start KZbin beefs to get attention for himself and to get views for his dying channel. Ever since he broke up with Toxic Tears his sub and view counts have been dropping and since he has no talent and can't create good subjects for videos he does what a lot of Black KZbinrs do and that is start beefs with other content creators hoping they'll get into a back and forth with him.

Certainly people like Jake Munro have a lot of followers... But that doesn't mean he knows what he's talking about. And certainly he should be no judge of character as he seems to have very little himself. His main idea of "content" is judgemental put downs of other alternative people. The only thing he ever had going for him was an awesome girl ( Toxic Tears) and he managed to blow that. He is a very negative human who seems to enjoy making others feel bad. Pay no mind to the opinions of sheep.

Even in the uk (where I'm from) sisters of mercy aren't a hugely well recognised band, unless you are even aware of alternative music genres most will not have heard any of their music. For example my mother who talks about her memories of the 80s constantly has never heard of sisters of mercy and has for certain never heard any of their music. Sure he can have an opinion on what he thinks to be truth or lies but what always annoyed me about Jake was him stating his opinions as facts acting like the Lord, king and God of everything like his opinion was the only correct opinion. And yes I find that very rude, and hurtful.

I'm 52. A schoolmate introduced me to Sisters of Mercy around 1985-86 or so, and I had the biggest crush on Andrew Eldritch 🙂 Seen them live several times. Even so, I'm not well versed in Goth music overall, and none of my friends back then were into them. My mom would sure as hell never have heard of them 😆

None of my family know who Sisters of Mercy are or any other goth band and they grew up in America and Australia in big cities. My mum dosn't even know who most popular artists and bands are. And since her stroke she can't even remember the music she used to listen to.

I cannot believe I was EVER a member/supporter on his channel. I watched him for like 2 1/2 years, and thought he was such a nice guy. I feel sick for ever sending him money. I also feel sick he was able to pull the wool over my eyes with his fake persona. I didn't even know he broke up with Kaya. What he did to her at the end of their relationship reminds me SO much of what my 19 year relationship has been. His video that came out a few days ago after they had been broken up a year... horrible. I know men just like him. He absolutely had a backup plan, which was a new love interest to make him feel better and move on. I have no doubt their relationship was toxic at times, but if he had truly loved her, he would have had more respect for her after 12 years. He didn't because he "mentally checked out" of his relationship. Right. Again, I believe it was because he was cheating, and found a new girlfriend who gave him what he wanted-sex, adoration, and someone who does what he needs. He is a jerk. I have to agree that GOTH music was not really prevalent on the radio. There'd be one song or so and then those who were Goth would just go down to the record store and by the vinyl or cassette of their favorite band. Then kids would bootleg using recording cassette players or other reel to reel devices. The only "Goth" music that I was exposed to was the Cure, Alice Cooper, and David Bowie. Only one was actually part of the genre, the other two just dressed the part.

Indeed. I was around in the 80s, in the UK. While I had heard of Sisters Of Mercy, I would not be able to identify them from a song that was playing. Eurythmics, A-ha, The Human League, and others you mentioned, were radio staples back then.

Same! I'd heard of Sisters of Mercy, but definitely didn't know their music well. I loved Adam Ant, Toyah, Blondie - but they got much more mainstream exposure than more niche bands like SoM - and back then, mainstream stuff was all most of us kids had much access to.
