There's a book about Madonna's songwriting from respected musical biographer Lucy O'Brien. She interviews Madonna's collaborators, dozens of musicians, and legendary songwriters who all say Madonna is at the genius level with lyrics, melody, songcraft, and musicality in general. Don't take it from fans take it from the professionals. It's called Like An Icon.

It's so refreshing to see someone get excited about MADONNA'S lyrics. She is a great song writer that makes you get into your feelings. If you liked this video...wait until you see her live performance of this song in her CONFESSIONS tour. Keep going 😊

To my knowledge, she has not been inducted into any song writing Hall of Fame as yet or won any award either, which is insanity.

She is performing this in her current tour as a tribute to all her friends and the famous people lost to AIDS. It’s really poignant as the first four people she highlights are her best friend when she moved to New York (Martin Burgoyne) who she cared for and paid all his medical bills and was with him at the end, her first ballet teacher Christopher Flynn who was the first to recognise the talent in her, Jean Michel Basquiat, one of her first boyfriends in New York and photographer Herb Ritts who took some of the most iconic photos of her and directed some of her videos. And she was married to Sean Penn between 1985-1989. If you like this, seek out the live performance from 2006’s The Confessions Tour.

Visual artist Keith Haring was another early avant-garde artist friend of Madonna from those early through late 80s era of her career who died of AIDS. Another visual pop artist from that group was Andy Warhol, who although gay died in 1987 at age 58 of AIDS-unrelated medical problem. It was Basquiat and Warhol who gave Madonna the street graffiti artist name of “Boy Toy” which she promoted in her line of fashion wear during the Like A Virgin/Material Girl era of her career.

I'm telling you thete isn't another Madonna yet, none of the popstars that came after are to her level: I 'm sure some of the youngsters who are Britney's or any other popstar fan will scream "outrage" 😊 but Madonna is not just a singer songwriter, performer and dancer, she's a true creator she has a vision and is able to create a whole show invent new things that all the others will copy later on.... and she never stopped improving herself... maybe the only one who has some of her talents is Lady Gaga although she has come after two decades of popstars while Madonna...nobody like her existed before her...there were singers but she invented the modern popstar role. A giant imho.

I agree with most everything you stated here but let's not forget at the beginning of her career there was also another girl with similar talent, looks and charm that they were pitted against each other til the end of the 80s at least. Cyndi Lauper. She could've been as successful as Madonna but she took a different route but at least there was a certain time where Cyndi gave Madonna a run for her money and glory.
@adrianoluz1108

"She could've been as successful as Madonna but she took a different route" OR did she took a different rout because she couldn't be as successful for so long? Something to think about 🤔 Cyndi might have had one or two bigger hits and be more successful for a very short period, but Madonna is about cultural impact, since the beginning. For what I know, there wasn't a Cyndi Lauper fever, there wasn't 'Cyndi wannabes' as a movement. And their looks had similarities in the beginning, but with crucial differences - Madonna was always about beauty and glamour even when she dressed punk-street style (or whatever that's called lol). Cyndi was always about being freakly weird. It's easy yo understand which style would be more appealing to the general public.

@@adrianoluz1108 There was for a brief time from 84 to 86 where you're either a team Cyndi or team Madonna. There are certainly similarities in their fashion, artistry, and aesthetics. I could go on and on. They're soul sisters more than any artist Madonna was pitted against. It's all good between them but Madonna had the ambition and vision to make it all happen. Cyndi wasn't as persistent and that's what made all the difference.
@Barbara_M.
@Barbara_M. 11 ай бұрын
@@carlheese I think the similarities were quite superficial and becoming popular almost at the same time they might have looked to some as similar.. I respect Cindy she is a good singer and she had something to say but imo more like an activist than a popstar she's never put on a total show like Madonna probably it's not what she liked to do since I consider Cindy really talented but I still remember when in 1987 I went to see Madonna in her "Who s that girl world tour" it was my 3rd hig ever and I was very young my picture might be limited because I'm not American but I've never seen before a 2 hours gig where songs were totally coreographed for a full set of dancers it was not the usual gig but something staged almost like in a musical... nowadays that's the norm back in the 80's it wasn't... every album and tour she was creating a character with a story and a new message always ahead of times... her music was evolving while her singing was improving... I prefer much much more rock music however Madonna is one of my icons and for me she still is the Queen of pop music 😊

This song deserves to be ranked as one of the best pop songs ever. It did reach #1 but it deserved so much more recognition. What I love most is the vocals you hear were Madonna’s first take on the demo.

There is a reason why Madonna is the best selling female musician of all time (the only woman on the top 10 list of best selling musicians), her lyrics are deep and meaningful. Considering your following, good on you to react to her output. It will be worth it and I predict over time you will attract a lot of new subscribers (hopefully, your current subscribers will warm to her) . I believe that Madonna has said that Sean Penn is the love of her life; they were married for several years in the late 80s. He is an immensely talented actor -- I agree that many of his movies are well worth watching. Great Reaction!

Yes, Sean Penn is a great actor. Madonna wrote the lyrics to this song and sang it in one sitting when she recorded it as a demo for someone else to sing. PatricK Leonard (co-writer and co-producer) and her huband (Sean) insisted that this recording be the version for the film. And the rest is history...one of her best ballads.

Madonna's lyrics are not always about romantic or sexual relationships, she writes a lot about family, friends and sometimes she will write about herself being the "baddie" but from the other person's point of view.

This is definitely in my top 3 fav songs of hers and of all time. This is from her True Blue album. The album that made everyone stand up and say hey maybe Madonna isn't just a flash in the pan. The album that all the patents could get behind and actually let their kids buy and listen to. Besides her 1st compilation album, The Immaculate Collection (which is still the highest selling compilation album of all time), I think True Blue is her top selling album.

This song is actually about an abusive relationship. This was also sang in one take and wasn’t intending to record it . So what you hear is the what she sang on the first recording. Nobody could of done this but her at that time. She was and still is so underrated for her song writing. We know she’s the most successful female artist but people rarely talk about her song writing. There’s so much more to her as an artist than just bubblegum pop. She is a genius. She’s currently singing this on her current world tour. Set to pictures of people that died of aids back in the 80s/90s. It’s such a powerful part of the show. There will be nobody like this woman again. I love that you are appreciating her buddy. ♥️ Loved the review buddy.

she and sean were married 85-89. Her label didnt want her to release this as the lead single for her third album. too different from what came before and her total new look. the song is either about something that happened between her and her step mother or a rape and abortion. shes alluded to both. she wanted a male singer to sing it but Sean and Patrick Leonard co-writer and co-producer talked her into keeping it. the song was the first of 3 #1 hits from True Blue. the first album ever solo excutive produced by a woman and her highest selling album.
