As mentioned it was a much older home and also smells bad these type of houses tend to have fungal growth around the walls or wood structures some of which may induce the air inside the house with hallucinogenic compounds. I was in Mumbai .. staying alone in a two bedroom apartment.. every night I use to hear a lady and baby crying in my apartment around night 2 - 3.. initially I use to ignore .. but it started disturbing my sleep.. one day I decided to check from where the voice is coming from. It was frightening to know that the voice was coming from an empty wardrobe.. I shook the entire wardrobe and closed it very fast in anger. And you know it was a magnetic shut door.. I waited there for 2 mins nothing happened. So I s.off the light and I was going to bed. Then I could hear a sound that my wardrobe door is opening.. I just ran out and that was the last I stayed there .. from then I started believing

you have actually found the answer in your problem.. insomnia causes hallucination.. My mother had hallucinations due to drug over dose and started talking about ghosts/ creepy creatures. Once she took good rest and slept for 2 days, she was back to normal. Brain causes illusion.
