If i want to do charcoal on a canvas and make sure the charcoal doesn’t smear once done, do you recommend I use a spray to keep it in place? I have to figure the name of the spray out but it’s suppose to make it stick.

When drawing eyes, I don't draw the iris. Instead, I draw the white part as an abstract shape, paying close attention to the angles. This effectively draws the iris for you.

Its funny that you squint. I have terrible vision and will purposely forgo getting glasses because it is easier to draw and not get hung up on the detail. The form and lighting are all that I train my eyes to see.

Excellent thankyou for sharing…Can i ask, why doesn’t my kneading eraser lift the charcoal as cleanly and as sharply as yours? It always needs multiple passes to lift unsatisfactory…Its a good brand eraser. Cheers

I think its all about blending first, so you get rid of the excessive material you have on paper and therefore you can extract the charcoal way easier. Im new in drawing with charcoal and have the same problem as you, but as Mad Charcoal says, getting rid of the fear of “destroying” a perfect streak, line, drawing or whatever, gives you a lot of freedom and it translates perfectly into this problem. The more i draw the more confident i am on “fucking up” a cool drawing and exalting the lights and shadows i see; its like you can never draw, blend or erase too much. If this doesn’t help you may be pressing too much into the paper, so its harder to pull it away. Hope this helps and happy holidays!
