She did such an amazing job on this series, of making the characters well rounded and tying everyone’s stories together.

I'm reading MaddAddam right now and I am having trouble getting through it because Toby is so drastically different from her character in The Year of the Flood. She was strong, stoic and levelheaded in book 2 but in book 3 she's an emotional, erratic lady who struggles with retaining her internal composure. Granted, I am not even halfway through MaddAddam but It felt like Toby's character regressed in order to build up Zeb's strong character. The change in Toby's was too drastic to feel real. Then there's also the change in Amanda's character but given what she went through and for how long... That's understandable. She went through a dramatic ordeal to justify a dramatic change in character. For Toby she got reunited with Zeb and went from being "the dry witch" to a lusty, pining damsel. That's not her style. Maybe it will get better but this point I am at in the book is really dragging right now.

Great review of one incredible dystopian story that is contained in 3 books! The first book tells the story from the perspective of the privileged. The second book tells the story from the perspective of the under privileged or working class. The third book tells the story from the perspective of the survivors, but also fills in important missing info on many of the main characters.

That’s such a good point, too, that we pretty much only see what life is like in the compounds in the first book, while the 2nd one focuses much more on everyone else.

Crake had a plan from the beginning to attempt to ‘fix’ humanity in his younger years but as he became older he realized the most practical solution was to end humanity. He was a genius who was good at concealing his misanthropy while he made his company execs believe he was doing business as usual. Genius is not always benevolent. Crake is a psychopath who truly believes he is saving life on earth by exterminating humanity. He might be right. It’s a tough call for Crake- eliminate humanity and stop the destruction of the planet, or allow humanity to continue on its downward spiral. He damned Jimmy survive and watch as the world around him crumbled, which was a horrible punishment but he spared Jimmy after all. It’s a tough call.

I just finished year of the flood and I loved it) as I loved oryx and crake before it. I've heard that maddamm the third book is hit or miss for folks. Do you recommend just going in and giving it a try?
@UnicornHunterbooks3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I definitely recommend it. I think what might make it more hit-or-miss is the fact that it’s a little bit different from the other two in that it’s not told in flashback and there isn’t as much backstory to the dystopian world, it’s just about everyone trying to survive the apocalypse. But I think it’s great!

Maddaddam is a great book. While not as beautiful as Oryx & Crake or whimsical as Year of the Flood, It wraps the entire story up quite nicely

I'd like to listen to these on Audible. I read the first one when it was a standalone and didn't know two follow ups would follow!

Yeah, it’s weird to think about how it was a stand-alone for a long time, and yet it left off at a cliffhanger so she must have been planning the other 2 books for quite some time. They almost feel like one consistent book when read back to back, totally not like most series’ where each book feels slightly different.
