I'm taxing my memory, but I believe that style of dancing was called 'locking' or 'popping'. There was a black sit-com called "What's Happening". One of the stars, Fred 'Rerun" Berry got his start dancing like this in a group called "The Lockers". I might be off because I'm old and it was a long time ago. But I always loved the Ohio Players. Thanks for the trip back!

@@Ken-h5d what’s happenin Rog? 😎😁 I had me a crush on Dee hehe 😉 love that show. You’re right on the money partner, they still have a lot of talented dancers today learning and performing the style.

Yes indeed. That was Popping and Locking. It originated in the late 60s with Boogaloo Sam, but was made more widely popular around the time of this video by Fred "Rerun" Berry, who played Rerun on the TV show "What's Happening," if you really want to reach back into the memory bank. The clothing the dancers are wearing is straight up out what you would find in his wardrobe for that show. Super heavy influence on what would become "uprock" in break dancing later on in that decade.

These guys were so much fun! And, Maddy, it went down on The Midnight Special every late, late Friday night back in the day, LOL! I think I was maybe 12 when the show first came out? Growing up in the cornfields of Illinois, it was my window on the world. 😎 Thanks for sharing this!

Back in the day you knew that you had arrived if you did a Soul Train and/or a Midnight Special. This classic group has and will continue to inspire many others. So many samples have been made from this song. By the way, the bass player and The Ohio Players lead singer is named Sugarfoot (AKA LEROY BONNER).
@samdoorley6101Ай бұрын
Yup still a banger. Deeply funky, and yes that baseline is a monster. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a pretty good version as well, with Flea anchoring the track with his base. The original however, is still the best I think.

The song Fire from the album Fire was another big hit for them. Maximum Funk. The intro guy was Wolfman Jack. American Icon who had his own radio show highlighting music artists. Everyone knew his voice instantly.

Howling Wolfman Jack. One of THE first syndicated DJs. Dude used to tape his show and broadcast it down from Mexico on the boarder, which had these 150k Watt stations that you could literally hear on AM radio from California to New York. Dude was a trip. He finished out his career at KRLA when I was in high school. Ohio Players had these great erotic album covers. Kind of controversial for the time. Awesome funk group.

If you enjoyed this you should definitely check out "Fire" and "Skin Tight" by Ohio Players. If you recognised the song it's probably because Red Hot Chilli Peppers covered it for the Beavis and Butthead Movie in the 90s.

You are now my fav! I love reaction videos but so many people doing them are pausing the song every 20 seconds to talk for 5 minutes!! I'm glad you let the song play with just a few brief pauses then talk about it when the song is over. Love Rollercoaster if an incredible song. Go listen to the album version and it will blow you away how incredible that live performance was. Subscribed!!!!
@davemccombsАй бұрын
Yeah that's because that's the law. In order to post other people's content, you need to make it transformative in some way. Just letting someone else's content play is plagiarism. There's like 4 chuckles in these videos and observations like "Wow they're really feeling it in the audience." What about this is something you would want to consume on purpose, let alone consider the poster "your fave?"

6:23..I never heard a band that oozed such sex/groove outta their songs..( " Fire"," Sweet Sticky Thing", Skin Tight" etc. Many of thier LP covers had a sexy lady on them) You were jamming your fanny off to this , and so did I ( with the entire crowd) when I saw them in '76, 2 weeks after seeing KC and the Sunshine band. It was a great concert summer for me-- Next month's show... the Average white Band. Well worth the overtime I had to work at Safeway!

Love this song, tho there is a part where you can hear a woman scream in the background and some people say it was actually someone being murdered in the studio 😭😭 not sure how true that is tho lol
@jordan0010 Urban legend, started by Bigfoot, lol.🤣 The real source of the scream - and the origins of the rumor - were explained by Ohio Player Jimmy "Diamond" Williams: There is a part in the song where there's a breakdown. It's guitars and it's right before the second verse and Billy Beck does one of those inhaling-type screeches like Minnie Ripperton did to reach her high note or Mariah Carey does to go octaves above. The DJ made this crack and it swept the country. People were asking us, 'Did you kill this chick in the studio?' The band took a vow of silence because that makes you sell more records." As Mr. Williams suggests, mystery and scandal is good for record sales and radio play, so why ruin a good thing by 'fessing up to the truth? Instead, take a "vow of silence" and watch the money roll in.

OMG Wolfman Jack!!! He used to DJ, yeah, the OG disc jockey era, on 1580 KDAY AM radio here in Los Angeles back in the 70s. A trip down memory lane. The Ohio Players were an R&B funk band. The Red Hot Chili Peppers did a remake of this in '96, featuring Beavis and Butthead. Simply for contrastive purposes Maddy, see which version you like better. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ap-ZdWuid5V0b9k 🤘😎🤘

PR RUMOR: There was a Rumor that the girl screaming in the background of the song was actually a female engineer being stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend and was accidently recorded, and they added her screams to the song. My Brother is half indian, half Caucasian and for almost two years would answer people by using the "Right", "Well, Well WELLLLLL" and "Say WHAT", trying to sound like the guy who did this.
