Vueko, Belaf and Wazukyan were some of the best characters in made in abyss. They have quite a bit of depth to them, then again made in abyss is pretty good at that.

When I found out the name of this song was after the sages, the whole thing was recontextualized and offered a brand new experience. It's still cool as a battle/attack theme for Faputa and I enjoy its use in the show, but seen through the lense of being about Wazukyan, Vueko and Belaf, it's...a sweeping story of tragedy. The deep organ tones begin to feel to me as though they evoke being led on a holy righteous quest by a prophet. Ganja's pure-hearted desire for a home is spoken of by the hopeful and determined melody that threads through that intimidating sound. The three of them, leading true believers on a quest for a home their native lands couldn't offer...and then... the heartbreaking melodies and eerie vocals that appear around 1:30 as it all begins to fall apart from the dream of a golden home into sickness and blood and horror, the godawful things that happened and the grinding march from 2:30 onwards that mixes both that original "religious vision" sound and the very human tragic melodies and evokes the gut churning and brutal things that their hopeful mission for a home eventually brought them unto, the howling tragedy that was what happened to poor Vueko and Belaf and their Irumyuui, and Wazukyan's prophetic sight that guided it all and why he made the choices he made hoping to do the right thing or as close as was possible....god, the Three Sages are such amazing characters

@@13thEvilHamster the flashback arc of the ganja corps might very well be my favorite moment of made in abyss, so tragic yet so hopeful in a way. Their longing lead them to the very depths of hell yet even there they somewhat got their desires granted. They got their homeland, Vueko found her reason to live, Belaf became something truly beautiful but at the cost of his principles and conviction and Wazukyan realized that what he and most of his men desired wat the adventure itself, to brave the abyss together yet they became trapped in the very homeland they longed for.

This soundtrack might be my favourite in the series , it starts up exactly when faputa managed to start achieving her goal after so many years , its like the song of the judgement of so many past sins is finally here and its gonna be sad and brutal

Just to put it into perspective how "strong" the three sages were as cave raiders. They started with little to no knowledge about the Abyss. They didnt even know about curses. They only followed a dream and managed to best a world that even most high ranking, experienced black whistles are struggling with. Wazukyan the prophet, Belaf the angel...and Vueko the human. In a weird way they managed to not only lay the foundation for all future cave raiders, no they also survived in the 6th layer for HUNDREDS of years. And their legacy endurs in Faputa, the embodyment of value, the princess of the Abyss herself.

When you look at it like that they really were a well organized and determined group with good leadership. I have no doubt that in a different time they would have been white whistles, they’re certainly qualified for it.

I wonder if Faputa is a personnification of the Abyss. She needs to eat humans to get value and become stronger. If only someone could rewrite the rules so that she could hunt those out of reach... And yet she is worshipped like a god. The "immortal princess". "The embodiment of value". Born from humans and an alien substance that gave life to their most treasured desire. An innocent blessing, a revenge beast, a "curious scorching sun who burns everything and cannot be stopped". Often, a creator uses the main theme of their work and declines it through several events. I wouldn't be surprised if Faputa, born from the Abyss, incarnated some principles of the Abyss herself.

This scene was pefection. Thats it. Its one of those special one of a kinda momments where the culmination of years of story telling in manga form, and almost an entire season of buildup, the show delivers in spades. Everything was perfect from her entrance, to the god tier animation, to this masterwork of song, to the raw passion and hate the voice actress was able to convey with Faputa's Speech. Made in abyss might not be a perfect series, it has its flaws and its not for everyone, but danm, this scene in specific is peak anime in its purest form

Is.. San-ken some kind of word play? It stands for Three Sages but.. Ken also means sword. This could also mean that the sword of judgment will be brought down on these people, because of said three sages. Sanken could also be a weird way of saying sinking, meaning the ship is going down, and everyone's journey is ending by facing Faputa's rage. This is in reference to the boat that all started to the discovery of the abyss for Vueko's crew, and how essentially everyone on that boat are facing 'divine punishment' since Faputa is considered a God so to say in the sixth layer.

Nah its just a rough translation for english, the literal translation is 三 (three) 賢 (Clever) the difference isn't how its said but how it is written. with the 'sword' ken being 剣.

Japanese has a huge amount of homonyms and while they're often used for puns this one is most likely just a coincidence. There are many words pronounced 'ken', including not only sword/blade but also item, frugal, ticket, and like..a lot of other ones I don't know probably! 'Sword of judgement' as in a force of retribution also doesn't really apply to any of their stories (Wazukyan never received any sort of reckoning, he lived peacefully for many years beyond a normal human lifespan and then died on his own terms -- and Belaf and Vueko didn't *deserve* any kind of reckoning, and while they both inflicted a lot of punishment on themselves, this isn't the kind of situation I would think of as a sword of judgement being brought against them.) San-ken sounding like sinking is simply a coincidence as well -- I doubt Tsukushi had that english word in mind when he named them the three wise men/three sages, and when Kevin named this song he had no idea it would be used for Faputa attacking the village, so nothing in the name was chosen to reflect her mission of destruction. To me this song was written to encapsulate the personalities of the three sages, I can hear portions that represent Wazukyan's grand prophetic visions and Belaf and Vueko's tragically human and caring personalities and the happiness they briefly found with Irumyuui and everyone else in the pleasant days before things went south, and the name simply reflects it is about these three characters.
