These comparison tastings are very important because for the majority of growers we are not able to ripen many of these types of figs, let alone at the same time.

Hi Eric, interesting how same variety can produce different size fruit in different locations, but possibly from other reasons. Just picked CC and BMKK today and compared them. Like yours, very similar in taste, but my CC (cutting from Padsfan), was bigger, 74g, cracked skin all around. Beautiful! BMKK had 50g. My MIB, picked about 10 days ago was around 50-55g. I live just north of Detroit, gave my trees an ample head start.

I've got a CC fig in ground in Washington, its finally beginning to take off so this is really exciting. I figured it was my only chance of ripening a BM style fig in a climate with a wet fall season, and the extra size that most people report is also a plus. Quite cold hardy too, not quite as much as a Chicago Hardy but its totally outperformed my Violette de Sollies and Yellow Long Necks which have frozen to the ground during particularly nasty winters. Oh, and the lack of FMV is really nice too (I'm hoping my zone is too cold for fig mites to spread it).

I agree I love growing the top tasting figs even in a cold climate. My black Madera produces lots of figs as long as I give it a headstart on March 1st even in zone 4 where I never thought it was possible to properly ripen black Madeiras. do you have any experience with col de dame blanc because that’s what I want to try next since it’s supposed to be a top tasting fig.

Have you published your list of ones you're keeping, the ones that made the cull? The ones that stand out for you.

I haven't published that yet. I need a little more time here in TN to see which ones will be kept. I should be pretty much done evaluating next year.

No Black Madeira KK?
@figsandchocolate55533 ай бұрын
I didn't have any ripe at that time but it is the same. I have ripened hundreds of each of these and the only one that stands out as unique is Madeira Island Black. Very similar but it has always been larger and has more honey

Do you anticipate that your local fig wasp population will re-populate ? Also, as you cull out the varieties that aren't as flavorful, does it allow you to reduce the number of trees that you have? In your video tours, you've got a lot of work to keep up on. I liken it to sour dough starter. If you don't throw out some of your starter each time you feed it, you'll end up with a swimming pool size volume of starter. Do you anticipate reaching a ceiling cap on your fig trees?

I have culled a few hundred varieties over the years. I cull all but the very best. I just got rid of 58 varieties last week and I’m getting another pile ready to go. I hope the wasp population can recover but that will largely be dependent on whether or not I can effectively manage the Black Fig Fly

@@figsandchocolate5553 I have spoken to a couple of people in the Glendale and Pasadena area, and they reported having fig wasps, and I've also caught a couple of videos from about 2 months ago showing wasps emerging from figs in those areas down here. But I've also talked with some folks who mentioned the drop in wasps secondary to the Black Fig Fly. I will be interested in hearing how your efforts go with combating the BFF.

I like when people eat their harvest, it's not gross at all to me! Makes me envision when I get to do it :D
