Magnificent videography of Madiera in Portugal ! Madeira is an island of flowers located amid the Atlantic Ocean, with steep cliffs, green valleys, majestic mountains and world famous wine. Belonging to Portugal, it is located nine hundred kilometres southwest of the European mainland and six hundred kilometres west of North Africa. Funchal is the capital and from the beginning a feudal lord resided in the Palacio De São Lourenço along with the military, and later the governor of the island. In 1493 King Manuel The First founded the cathedral which was the first to be situated beyond the continent of Europe and was designed according to Mudéjar style, the Arab construction method of the Christian Moors. The small fishing village of Camara De Lobos is situated west of Funchal on the south coast and was made famous by Sir Winston Churchill who painted its small harbour. São Vicente looks like something from a picture postcard and wine growers proudly display their traditional homes and well laid out vineyards. The town is particularly well known for its Grutas, Madeira’s only accessible cave system and which indicates its geological past. In the north east is the tourist centre of Santana with its straw-roofed houses, beautiful flowers and streets lined with patterned cobblestones. Amid a fertile terraced landscape is the picturesque centre of Faial and its modest parish church, the destination of a major annual pilgrimage. The village exudes tranquillity and there has been little impact of tourism as both the landscape and the local people have retained their original character. Madeira is like a jewel in the Atlantic, possessing its own rich variety of exceptional, natural landscapes. A wild beauty with many hidden treasures!

I was there in 1965 on our way to NY from Malta, we were on the cruise ship SS Constitution because my mom wouldn’t get on a plane. It was a great experience, this brought a lot of memories even though it has changed a lot since then.

*FUN FACTS ABOUT PORTUGUESE ISLANDS:* Azores island chain was stolen by Portugal from Morocco. The *Islas Salvages* were stolen by Portugal from Spain in the 1930's while Spain fought a Civil War. And, the Madeira Islands are African and first discovered by Moorish berbers who first settled the islands in 733 A.D. Cheers mates

It depends on the location, in the north it can get to 9°C at 300m high, so if you go up it can get lower, in the south is around 12°C at sea level, this all around one month and then go up...

Why did you not visit the island of Santa Maria which was the first to be discovered and full of history beautiful scenery and which played a big part on the second world war with his American base, and also the island of Corvo very small not famous but also graceful on his nature and beauty, missed informed and influenced by the political and tourist influence by the Azores travel agencies , too bad.. Christopher Columbus knew how to appreciate Santa Maria he stopped there and rested on his way back from America.

Why mention things like land features and caves being made millions of years ago instead of just saying lava created it. To mention that number of years is not proven but supports evolution and circular reasoning. Go listen to Dr. Ken Hovinds explanation you will see there is no proof how long such formed. Otherwise this is a great pretty place and video.
