lllJoseLuislll Here! (sorry for some potential mistakes) 1- Do you listen to a lot of pop? Absolutely, including the artists I worked with on this album. I am a big listener of pop music. I am a huge fan of The Beatles, and by the way, I've used some of the melotrons and sonorities from this [The Beatles'] era on "Adventure". Bands such as Electric Light Orchestra, Supertramp, are the kind I love. 2- Is the experimentation in your music linked to your prod gear? I am the kind of producer that is all about computers. I've never been attracted by all this "analogic myth", the engines, etc. I've always seen computers as the "best instruments ever" and as for me, I only have some favorite synths, some other stuff. But the problem with computers is that they offer you too much possibilities, so the first thing I did when I started working on the album was creating sounds, without creating songs. Just elements and sonorities that complete a sort of "sound palette" that I could re-use on some songs, and thus find an identity and a coherence within the album, without feeling "crushed" by the infinity of all the possibilities offered by digital tools. 3- You produced Ellie Goulding, Lady Gaga... How did it go? I started quite early to know that I was very interested in producing other artists. It was among the three things I really wanted to do : lives, CDs, and production for others. Because [producing for others] it is something truly human and fascinating, when you have to immerse in the universe, the desires of someone else, then communicate, help them to express the ideas they want to express. It's something I find really interesting, and I've had the chance to do it with renowned artists very soon. All the collaborations were different. With Ellie Goulding, it was a song I had made, I sent it to her, she wrote the lyrics and it was finished. With Lady Gaga, it was more complex, we spent more than a month in the studio in Los Angeles, where I was able to be completely immersed in the creation process. I am utterly captivated by bands or artists that have this kind of "world-scale ambition", that want to be legends, superstars. Being able to contribute to their projects makes me happy and interests me a lot. 4- Do YOU have this "world-scale ambition"? I don't, really. And it is probably why I want to contribute to the others'. But I don't have the "strength" [literally "shoulders"] for that, I don't have the talent I think, to be a global superstar. But it's true that I do want my music to be accessible/reachable, to touch people. Nonetheless, being a pop icon such as Lady Gaga or this kind of artist, is not the same thing that I desire actually, so no, I do not have this sort of ambition. 5- Madeon is an anagram of Deamon. Are you either an angel or a deamon? Well, I don't know, I think we are all a bit of both. Honestly I like playing with letters, mixing things. It was my MSN pseudo/nickname when I was a kid. I just liked the idea of taking back bits of moments/times, and building from what already existed. So I rearranged the letters and created a new name. Yeah, I think we all are angel and deamon. 6- Is this album a step/stage ? Will there be another Madeon after "Adventure"? It is true that I see this as a step, I think that's the purpose of albums : to mark stages/steps, to create different eras in a discography. I am quite impatient, because I believe I concluded some themes I wanted to do as Madeon, and now I have the feeling to be more open to new things, I wonder "where do I wanna go next?" and that's pretty liberating. I'm also curious on people's reactions, about what I brought them on this record. I want to see if they are going to understand or be receptive about some particular things. I think their thoughts on this album will probably influence what I'll do next, even if I try to stay objective and "disconnected", isolated, it's always a gaz to feel understood and communicate with a public. So, yeah, for me, the second album will be possible only because there was a first one before... If that makes sense..! 7- Is it true that you considered quitting music several times? Yes of course, but I think that's something quite usual here... But I believe it is a feeling I won't have anymore, because I kind of had a revelation, where I knew that this was what I wanted to do with my life. That I needed it. But it's true that, making music, at first, was something painful, difficult (it's not the case anymore today). To create something happy and dancing was really heavy, I had to force myself a lot to do it. Because my scolarity was hell, and my only hope was Music. I was putting a huge pressure on myself constantly, because my life depended on it actually, so it devored everything else, and I had kind of a love/hate relationship with Music at first. But now, I'm more objective, more comfortable in what I do, I get to express myself in my songs, and I see this whole as a playground rather than a sort of necessity. 8- Is this album will rock in live? Yes! Actually I have themes/things I love in electronic music, which are more "punchy", "gutsy" and visceral, powerful sounds. I think those are not perfectly fit for an album format (or rather I didn't want to integrate them in "Adventure"), but I really want to explore them on stage, with more electronic, punchy, bouncy versions, while keeping the base-feeling of the album. So that's actually what I'm currently doing : dramatize all this, creating a true electronic show around "Adventure". 9- If you should sum up "Adventure" in 3 words, what would they be? From city to desert. It was my synopsis actually. It was the scene I had in mind. Being in a great and luminous city, then leaving it to meet loneliness but also isolated, vast beauty. That really was a contrast I had deeply in mind. It is mentioned on the cover/sleeve of the album, realllly openly mentioned in the music videos (there will be a trilogy that tells it), so, yeah, it was the governing principle of all the concept around "Adventure". 10- Finally, who are the artists you dream to produce? So, let's make a little Paul mcCartney, and at the same time, why not some Kanye West?
