As someone who owns a Stagg 57, one of the big bonuses of the 57, is it's price. I believe I got mine under £50. That is for an all-rounder dynamic mic, that excels on snare drums, guitar amps and vocals. The low tuned screaming vocals on my debut EP "Upon A Bloodied Earth " where all recorded using an SM57. The current demos I'm working on, I record both speech and vocals using a Stagg 57. When it comes to drums, I record them using a few different positions with just a Stagg 57. The position I opt for is an inside one - where the mic is placed between the drummer and the bass drum, but pointed to catch both the transient of the bass drum mallet and the snare and hi hat/overheads and some toms. I prefer this technique over others as my suitcase drumset "bass" is made from an old suitcase so it hasn't got a hole to capture sound from the front, and also capturing the transient of the beater on the bass is important for metal music, where the bass drum is meant to be punchy and inpactful and add power and impact to fast playing distorted guitars. My general issue stems more from the first point you raised - I don't have a good drummer so I usually record/play the drums and I suck at them. It's alright playing rock beats or linear slow stuff, but when the tempo picks up and it's thrash beat or blast beat time, my coordination goes all over the place and my limbs sync up, meaning I end up hitting the kick and snare at the same time instead of hitting the kick on the off beats or vice versa.

I pretty much exclusively use a one mic technique for drums. I produce mostly 50’s and early 60’s influenced bands and that’s the way they did it in that time period, so it gets results that just sound “right”. But another big part of the drum sound on those old records is the bleed through the vocal mic(often a U47). So if I’m not recording a band live and just recording a kit, or kit and guitar, etc I’ll put up a tube condenser mic where I would place a singer just to get that room bleed. For the kit I either use crotch or overhead technique, depending on the drummer… one’s definitely not always better than the other between players. And with overhead it helps to have the mic not facing straight down but at an angle, not too steep but say like 30 degrees. And my favorite mics to use on the kit are a 1. A pencil condenser like an akg or a budget friendly oktava. 2. an electro-voice 665. There’s many EV mics that would get you this sound tho, such as the 666/RE20/Pl10 to name a few… they’re all in the line of development that became the modern day RE20. 3. another broadcast mic actually, the Shure SM7. It does that snare grabbing thing the 57 does, but without the harsh mid hump and with more detail. It actually sounds pretty close to how the beyerdynamic did. Anyway… Cool video, I thought the 635a had some interesting results. I liked how it dulled the crap out of the cymbals. If there’s one thing I hate it’s loud harsh cymbals… oh, and rape. I don’t care much for that either. Well then, on that note… toodles

Jack Richardson was my production teacher in college. He did a lot of jingle work before producing The Guess Who, Alice Cooper etc. He recommended the 57 on kick for jingles or music for played on low fi speakers. The mid punch made the kick present. Works well on laptop speakers and crummy 70’s televisions. I’m gonna experiment with the single mic thing for the kit at my next gig. I think the crotch position will work best for sound reinforcement but I won’t know untilI I try it. I wonder what a pzm mic would sound like. Hmmm.

I really like the 635a for all the jazz stuff, and it works really nicely for all the styles in the room mic placement (feels sorta like the drums on Song 2), although you are right in that it could definitely use some compression. Not a big fan of the overheads being the only position though, it makes the snare sound strange with all of the mics, but the 635a has that high-end roll-off to make it sound a little bit better. Overall, I’d probably want to use at least 2 mics, likely have one as the room mic and then one on the kick drum, then adjust the levels to balance it out

Interesting stuff! I've made lots of great sounding drum tracks with 1 mic. I liked the SM57 the most, on pretty much everything, followed by the m201, then the EV635a. I have a bunch of 57's for my drums, etc.. They do good on just about everything. I prefer a hi-fi sound and clarity, but the 635a would be perfect for lo-fi type stuff, being darker and kind of muffled. That m201 was great though.. Kind of the best of both worlds. 🤘

Great video. I have done a lot with a single condenser mic about 3 ft over the snare. I believe a lot of early Rolling Stones albums mic’d it this way. If the tracks make it to the daw you can duplicate the track and filter the highs to create a separate kick if you need more punch.

this is an excellent tip and I fully endorse it!

Ah cool.. I’ve tried that too w a phone recording, duplicating and eq isolating. Found that doing something similar on a kick mic can be great from a fet 47 type mic: duplicate the track and add some distortion, take out some low frequency content (to simulate a dynamic type kick mic ish).

Basically, however you place the mics and play diferent styles you get an contrasting sound betwen styles.Depending on music and mic placement you should always choose the best variant for what sound are you searching. As a live guy, mics and placement depend from venue to venue but in the ears of studios, most guys choose the two technically ways in various patterns depending on the artist, album, feeling they try to give and so much more things that needs to be put down on paper.I also think that this representation is purely focused to give you a comparasion betwen the two techniques. I think the EV was probably me least favorite of the bunch in all positions. It lacked high end clarity, and as such, it kind of make all of the drums/cymbals sound a bit cardboardy and dead. I think for a price-to-sound ratio, the SM57 wins for me, hands down. The 201 probably sounds the best overall, but the 57 is also a quarter of the price, and I don't think the sound gains by the 201 were noticeable enough to make me want to go and spend 4x the amount on a mic. Overall, I think the BDM201in the crotch position is probably the most usable of all of them, with the Shure SM57 an extremely close second in the same position.

It's like the old HIFI adage "Rubbish in Rubbish out" buy a good stylus first kinda deal. But really, really informative. Obviously different positions give you different "mixes" of the kit and some are better than others according to the music genre. I totally see your point and obviously i respect that. And of course, the missing 30% is about 57 and snares, "they're good to each other" ;) Great video as ever!!! Thanks

love this comment! i’ll be doing a video mixing with these sounds, so there’s a high chance the 57 becomes my favorite in that context 😂 🙏🙌

@@MadeOnTape I do not claim to have the truth in any case, it is just a matter of taste or opinion, and perhaps the opposite will happen and I will end up changing my mind, an enriching option in any way. The test in a band context will be great, but I recognize that it will be a great effort on your part.

I can always tell a 57 because of that pinched 2.5K sound. Always makes me want to squint my ears. My opinion has always been if you have a M201, you can toss tho 57's out the window. I've done Drums with a 635a in a low over head with and a sub kick out front a bunch of times. Great combo. 57... I guess if you have to, but its gross behavior. M88 is another great single dynamic mic for drums.

You seem amazed that this is even possible. For decades entire bands were recorded with one mic. I know, I was there. So was Sam Phillips, Elvis, Roy, Jerry Lee, Chuck, Bo, Johnny , etc.

@@MadeOnTape I started recording with 1 mic, a 1/4v inch open reel mono machine (Wollensak), my parents' basement, and friends who could actually play music, in 1961. That's how I learned. Mic placement, instrument placement, acoustics, etc. We couldn't afford outboard gear so I taught myself electronics and built my own. Speakers ? We built our own because we couldn't afford 'real' speakers. And I kept going. Early 1990s, I graduated to digital, sttaqe of the art (at that time). 64 track MIDI thanks to Voyetra MIDI interface, 3 Yamaha tone generators, Roland R8 drum machine, etc., etc. I've worked in television, recording studios (studio bassist), etc. Now I'm writing my own plugins. Old habits die hard, if at all. Long story short, you start with 1 mic., 1 MONO tape machine, 1 basement, friends that can play music. GO. Keep learning !

curious...do you also record to cassette with the 635? could be a factor...could also be broken...could also be context! thanks for listening!

@@MadeOnTape no though I run stuff through cassette sometimes. I just based my impression comparing the sound to the 57. I have two and the other one is actually darker and a little weirder sounding

@@biggsoft6910 I just used the 635 as the room/sax mic in a live jazz recording and it sounded amazing in that context. Curious if just the nature of this "shootout", given placement, affected the way it came across. Again, I love that mic and will add more. I LOVE good little dynamic mics! Thanks again for sharing!

From what I’m seeing, I’d go EV in crotch position, M201 as overhead, and close mic the snare with the 57 and that SM7b on the kick 🤷🏼♂️😄

I think putting other instruments in like bass and guitar would show that the 57 would fit in better in the mix.
