Can someone explain me the ending of Charulata movie?

At the end of the movie, when charulata was crying for Amal, leaving her(as she was deeply in love with him), Bhupati, her husband catches her at the moment and realises her longing for him. This shatters his mind to a formidable extend as potrayed by his restlessness and a triggering outburst in the carriage . At the ending scene, when charulata faces Bhupati, she gently appeals to him to hold her hand again and bhupati , makes an attempt to reach out his hand towards her, but the freezing of the scene reflects that despite their attempt , their hands never met, which means that their relationship never reaches to the normalcy again. Eventhough I have been sympathetic towards Bhupati for his personal turmoil , but honestly, despite having an upright conscience , his attempts to hold the loosening grip of their relationship was too ineffective and inadequate.
