Thank you so much for these pubcasts, they are the highlight of my week. I have to share a story, I live on the south shore of Boston and I had surgery a week ago. I pretty much am laying low and healing but after a week had to go to the grocery store. I was feeling pretty lousy and didn't even realize I was wearing my Madigans Pubcast shirt. Behind me I hear someone yelling I'm a termite too. I didn't even turn around, but she came right up to me and said it to me and it dawned on me that oh my god shes a Kathleen fan too!! We had a nice talk and I left smiling and grateful that I had to go to the store. Just wanted you to know that your termites are everywhere and they are being good and making people happy even when not feeling good. Thanks for everything!!

I just learned about Lewis Termin. "After WWI, Lewis Terman, a psychologist at Stanford, decided to do a long-term study following a group of extraordinarily intelligent children, whose IQs averaged 140. He called them the “Termites.” I thought of you immediately! Malcolm Gladwell wrote about the Termites in his book, The Outliers. Just thought you would want to know, if you don't already. Thanks for the pubcast and for keeping all your termites so well informed.

Hi Mama T and Paddles. I recalled that you mentioned on a recent Pubcast about the Rhine River drought, so I thought you might find this information interesting. I was listening to a news report about the current drought in Europe and in some parts of France, you can now walk across a river. Also, in the Czech Republic a lengthy drought has exposed carved boulders, known as "hunger stones," that have been used for centuries to commemorate historic droughts, and warn of their consequences. The folowing warning was carved in 1616 and read, "If you can see me, cry"; first seen in 2018 and now resurfaced again during this drought. Another hunger stone's inscription says, "We cried, we cry and you will cry." YIKES!!!

Loved the appearance of Baby Cat! What a beautiful cat. Yeah, there needs to be a Baby Cat t-shirt like @Lily Pudding said. About wealthy people donating - some of this is present, some is past. This barely scratches the surface of what they did. Tom Yawkey, owner of the Boston Red Sox, lived in Georgetown County, SC. He donated his land to SC as a wildlife preserve & for research purposes. He also donated funds for Georgetown Hospital & a boys’ home. His will set up the Yawkey Foundation which has donated to Mass General, Boston Medical Center, set up scholarships for students with financial need, helped the homeless, and more. The YF is still very active in donations. The Huntingtons, super wealthy families descended from the same forebears, did a lot of donating. Here’s info about some of them & only a bit of their work: Collis P. and his wife Arabella were abolitionists. They funded what is now Hampton University. Collis has a building named after him @ Tuskegee University which was dedicated to education Black women; Arabella financed the building after Collis’ death; the building is still in use. Collis’ nephew, Henry E. donated his family homestead to the city of Oneonta, NY to be a library and park. Arabella married him after Collis’ death. He & Arabella founded the Huntington Library, Art Collections, & Botanical Gardens in San Marino, CA. Archer M. & his wife Anna Hyatt Huntington (a sculptor) built Atalaya Castle (now a part of Huntington Beach State Park) & Brookgreen Gardens. Both were donated to SC after he died. They donated funds & land during the Depression, established museums, and donated land to two different colleges in the State University of New York system. One piece is Camp Pine Knot, a “great camp,” on Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks. The camp was “sold” for $1.00 in 1947 to SUNY-Cortland to be used for educational purposes.

The TSA would suspect your mom as being in on a heist. They always pull my 80 year old mom aside for a pat down. Seems suspicious that she can’t use the scanner because she uses a walker (and still ask every time “can you make it through without it”) and can’t get her arms over her head. Not a good get away driver or terrorist. Guess they think “this lady clearly has nothing to live for, she’s probably hiding explosives”

Hilarious - as usual. The Tower of London is home to The Crown Jewels (and the Raven master and the ravens): the state crown on the purple pillow, the scepter and orb - and a whole friggin’ lot of other jewelry. And that’s in addition to her PERSONAL jewelry: Diana’s Lover’s Knot tiara (belonged to a the wife of the Tsar of Russia, I think), the tiara that Meghan wore when she married Harry (which was a gift from the last Queen Mother), the Pearl chokers her dad and Prince Philip crave her, the diamond Bow brooch the Guide Girls gave her, which was her favorite - and TONS and TONS of gifts from heads of state (check out that diamond/ruby tiara and parreure from a Saudi king that she wore when she hosted Trump). Only what she got at her wedding, I think. After she became such gifts became part of the Crown Jewels and belong to the reigning monarch. Baby Cat (a/k/a El Mencho?) looks fat and happy. Thanks, Mama Termite. Man - you work a lot for us!

No it’s not possible for any 18 wheeler to go 140 mph. Average speed for 18 wheeler is 55-70 mph taking into consideration cars get in front of us and slow us down. Its not possible to drive a large truck even the size of the largest uhaul at 140 mph. Top heavy and wind resistance slows you down. Also consider curves, construction, down grades, up grades and anything else you have to adjust speed for. When I was driving high value loads we had to fill tanks prior to picking up the load and not allowed to stop for any reason for 3 hrs. No excuse. Just for reasons of theft. This story of brinks jewelry is some solid bs inside job. My thoughts.

I always like the gold dollar coins, more than the two dollar bills. I could order the coins from the US Mint, free shipping right to my door, and get miles on my airline credit card. I liked the old Presidents. Nobody knew Millard Fillmore was a president and would question if that was even real money. I felt rich with a pocketful of gold "dubloons". I used them a lot when I traveled for conferences and meetings for work. The coffee shop people would get to know me right away and were really nice. The cab drivers liked getting whole rolls of them, to give to their kids. I only had one person not enjoy getting those coins. But then NPR radio did a Big Expose' about the credit card miles and the US Mint stopped the free shipping. I am still sad about that, and the banks never have the gold dollar coins. Nobody likes the two dollar bills near so much.

My grandmother was very superstitious and she tore the corner off of the $2 bills. It was just the corner, so they were totally useable. I used to see a lot of them like that when I was kid and teen in the '80's-'90's. Whoever wrote they weren't useable in that article just made an assumption because they didn't understand. It doesn't really make sense for people to render the bills unusable.
