(5>>) One of drum corps' greatest selling points is that it's all-natural power: a freely-portable, purely human-driven, ingenious piece of thrillmaking. If we say amps are okay, then we can no longer trust what we're hearing, and no longer admire the acoustic ingenuity of it. (>>6)

i am always in awe of how they can march these complex shows and perform as well as they do. It takes so much work and concentration. The beauty of the shows are special.

I remember this show! What fun... I remember the load in. Everyone was going nuts as the Netherlands had just beaten Russia in the Euro competition so everyone was running around in Oranje... too bad the opener is cut as we did a little quote from the "Ole, Ole" soccer chant and the place went nuts. Great crowd... I remember even signing autographs after the show with some lovely Dutch ladies... Thanks for the post and bringing back good memories! 50 guilders.... :)

THANK YOU FOR THE POST! This was one of the greatest times while I marched 88 Scouts. I have never seen this video and love it!!!! Thnx again.

YES! You can really hear a lot of different things than in the DCI finals recording.

YAY! Thanks to this video I actually have some camera time. All these years I've never gotten to see more than a smidgen of screen time from '88 as I ran past the camera in finals. Now here I am at 6:15 in the DCH finals with Randy Piper in the foreground! I'm the guy to the right and beyond with a mullet.(!) Anyhow, a thousand thanks for this pot Jan Jaap! Jeff Francis and Kent Rocco got some good close-ups too. Go MG alums! (Maybe somebody can call me out now, oops!)

agree this is one of the best all time DC shows. It was "electric and intense" -- still gives me goose bumps to hear it!

(2>>) It's really hard to develop an argument AGAINST expanding an art form. The brass "dancing", for example, seems a perfectly natural, low-tech, skill-intensive outgrowth of what drum corps is in fact all about, and is thrilling when done right (Santa Clara & Cavaliers come to mind). (>>3)

Funny that the 'Let Me Try Again' music is mixed in.. This was the closer for the Jubal show that year (day). This video was actually shot on June 25th 1988 - the day Jubal became European champion, and it became the coolest dat in dutch drum corps with the scouts appearing in their to-be-world-champion show, and the coolest day in Dutch soccer with the dutch team becoming European Champion as well. This was a day to remember :-)

Yes, JanJaap, thank you very much for posting this. We were good! A very cool moment at the end is Dan Feeney with the orange scarf or whatever (? - sorry, not sure exactly what it's called) honoring the Dutch football team's victory--I still have mine. Perhaps even more remarkable is the American flag in the stands, presumably being held by non-Americans. WHERE would you see that in 2007??? Great memories - thanks again.

I'm sure it was scary to march this show without yard lines or hashes.

(4>>) As for vocals onfield, it's been around forever. The real objection seems to be the introduction of amps and mikes, and here we have a valid argument. Amplification has no limit, and it also "poisons the well". (>>5)

(3>>) I might even remind you that the Scouts, by 1988, were well along in developing this idea, since they pretty much introduced it in the first place (see 1982-83). (>>4)

One of several changes between this early season show and Finals. Just before that, too, when the horns were in their slow scatter, they added having the players hold the horns away from their face at random angles (can't see it on the Finals vid because it was zoomed in on the soloist).

They had a similiar uniform (white top, green slacks) in '83 when they played Strawberry Soup. Everyting old is new again, it seems. :)

This is absolutely beautiful. From the uni's to the signature "high steppin". GO SCOUTS! 88, 95, and 97 to me, stand out as the best damn show's i've ever seen from them. 95 especially, that was a year that EVERYONE waited for the scouts to come out and lay it down. What happened tho? How'd they fall off SO badly? Did soeone in their office piss off someone in the DCI office? does ANYONE know the inside scoop on that?
@threesis5717 жыл бұрын
i had heared scott had left as director cause he voiced his opinion about sometging to do with jusging back then n they punished the scouts for it and they came in not in top 5. He resigned that fall. Since then madison has not been the same. I really liked scott and thought he was grewat but thats my opinion. Hvae been a fan of the scouts since 1961 when our group had them here in ohio to put on a show. Loved them then and love then now. This video is awsome. Marty

Now that they have removed the Madison Scouts video of 1988 DCI Championships from KZbin, I am amazed on how many other clips of this show are either not available or are ruined by some pathetic dweeb who claims copyright violations. This is really sad... Pathetic...

why was there a cut right after the opening fanfare in Concerto for Guitar and Jazz Orchestra?
@atlvalet17 жыл бұрын
Hey look, Chris Harmon has a lot of screen time right at the end of the show (soprano).

was this show cut short for some reason? It is certainly not the entire performance that was played in the shows I saw?
@BarracksSi8 жыл бұрын
The edit here left out everything between the opening fanfare and Malaguena. Not sure why; maybe just a highlight version, or a licensing issue regarding Concerto For Guitar And Jazz Orchestra?

(6>>) It's a blatant cheat, and kind of a drain on the overall impression, even when it does it's job as designed. How do we know the brass isn't amped? The drums? Here you have a good case. Food for thought. Sorry for the lengthy post!

There seems to a VERY large contingent of folks out there that want this uniform back. NOT the Micheal Ciserio "look" they currently sport. To me, DCI has lost it's rough edge. No brass dancing, no talking, just peel my face off, and be done with it.
@baronjosefr16 жыл бұрын
I can see now why this show never won anything before DCI Finals. There is a spark missing that was certainly there in the Finals show.

I first saw them at DCM and fully expected them to win, but they came in 4th. I worked with some of the members in years afterwards and they said they realized how much they needed to clean up after coming back from Europe.
@rwindsor517 жыл бұрын
I wondered that too, if there were some kind of weird politics. I just can't see how their show this year is ranking 16th place. They may not be top five but come on..
@ikshields17 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the '07 uniform looked like an off-the-rack number, from the high school budget line. No detail, no depth, no sense of the brand. Or, maybe that's all Madison's current budget allows? I wonder, do the post-Scott Stewart bunch have a clue of what makes the Scouts look like the Scouts, and not just a bunch of colors on a generic pattern? I hope we're not looking at a drop to Division II for this great corps...
