Testing things while out at flee markets is why i had one of these. I dont need it anymore so i gave it away. But what bothers me is that there is no reason for them to be pulling the composite signal. that screen should be able to do the higher picture signals that the SNES could put out.

Back then, these were amazing. Just the idea of taking something that was normally meant for big screens, and going portable with it. We were settling for stuff like this because we had not yet reached that stage where PS2 and newer-gen stuff could be emulated. Yeah, it's true--the battery sucked and the screen clarity wasn't quite there--but it's crazy how far we've come from these! I have a SupaBoy SFC, and there's a certain charm. Had they offered newer elements, gone slimmer with better hardware in future iterations imagine how relevant this would be in comparison to other things out now. A lot of other companies have basically gone further with this idea for sure. The tech has definitely come a long way.

The "Retroad 5" from Aliexpress has a 7" screen, HDMI out, loud and crisp sound, and may be the better portable SNES option. Cons are that it charges with Micro USB, and unfortunately the buttons are worse. You also have to buy an adapter to plug in your own controllers. Unlike the SupaBoy, it does not stand on its own, but comes with a plastic stand.

The fact that this still doesnt have an HDMI port still to this day blows my mind, cause if GamerzTek was able to do that with the 8bitboy i dont see why Hyperkin couldnt, but i am pleased to see that it went to USB C charging. I still have mine that requires Micro USB. But i dont touch it as much as i used too. Im too happy with my Analogue Super NT. Ghostly edition.

I unearthed my original SupaBoy sometime last year just to check that battery wasn't about to explode, and that is hard to go back to. They've obviously upgraded it since then, but I wonder if the SNES-on-a-chip has seen any changes. On most previous SNES clones, the Mode 7 stops working on Super Ghouls and Ghosts from the second boss onwards, for example.
@VinnytotheK Жыл бұрын
How much worse is the original, and in what ways?
@Akito01 Жыл бұрын
@@VinnytotheK well, the LCD screen is inferior to even the current SupaBoy version -very soft and comparatively dim. The Dpad was very very stiff. It had a barrel jack and dedicated AC adapter for charging. The worst thing was perhaps the sound, where the original release version had a low constant tone that annoyed some people more than others. I know the sound issue got resolved with later releases.
@VinnytotheK Жыл бұрын
Oh dang okay, just overall worse. lol Good to know they've updated it over the years. I remember seeing them in stores back when it came out, but never had much reason to buy one. I ended up modding a PSP and got my portable SNES fix that way! @@Akito01

I wonder how many of the original Supaboys are still working today. I have two, the ones that came in the plastic slip cases not cardboard boxes with the reset buttons on the front. They worked great until they developed issues. One would turn on but never boot a game and the other had a very touchy reset button, just nudging it in the heat of gameplay would reset the system. Been weary of buying another one ever since.

No hate on the Supaboy in 2024... but I'm just surprise they are still updating this thing! lol. I have pretty good memory, and *VERY* much recall when it first released back in the day... and even in like 2012... it was a unwieldy and a impractical novelty. I remember early videos from people like Metal Jesus Rocks basically asking _"who is this for?"._ That was over a decade ago, and before FPGA devices, emulation being in anywhere the stat it is now, all these cheap powerful handhelds, and all the smartphones we have today... and before you could get 512gb of storage on a tiny flash card for $40. And again: that was in 2012.... in 2024 the Supaboy is utterly redundant, bulky, heavy, the screen looks rough, it sucks batteries.... and from a manufacturing and distribution perspective: it seems to me like the kind of niche device that Hyperkin has to work really hard to offload to retailers. I can't imagine it flies off shelves compared to the tiny 'impulse buy' chinese handhelds loaded with roms. So why they are actually *STILL* actively updating the design, and producing even more new stock..... lol, it's kind of crazy if you think about it! I'm sure there is plenty surplus old stock from the last decade in abundant supply and sitting in warehouses and on shelves. God bless Hyperkin for being crazy like that, I guess. I always thought the Supaboy was actually pretty neat... wouldn't have minded playing around with one years ago before we had all these devices we have access too now. I will say that for the low price of these things, there is no harm in people buying them if they are interested. It's not like they are a scam or overpriced. I can't imagine most people will find them practical for travel use compared to just about any other better solution that exists today... but if you want one to tinker with, I support that. I know 12 year old me in the early 90s would have had my mind blown. And even in 2012, I would have gotten one if it wasn't for the size and battery life. If you enjoy this device, and think it is cool: then god bless you, have fun my friends, I support whatever way you find enjoyment (life's too short for anything else). But I do admit to personally finding the Supaboys persistence to be amusing from a business perspective. Hyperkin really are a bizarre company.

I got the SFC a few years back and didn’t like it. It’s pretty cool but the screen and buttons were not good. I got it for about 60$ on amazon due to a Holiday Discount. The screen looks dim when not looking at it directly and I had trouble with the dpad especially in fighting games. I found a video on upgrading the screen which I did but it is still not great. You’re better off buying a handheld from Anbernic or Retroid their screens are waaayy better. If I had paid 100 dollars or more for it Id be pissed off. I would gladly pay more for it if it had a good 4:3 screen.

It was nice to have a decade ago, but overall it's just a gimmicky handheld with a composite stretched screen. The Analogue Pocket or just emulating it is so much better. Anbernic also has a SNES style handheld. And don't forget that the GBA is essentially s SNES in your pocket. In fact it's better than a SNES.

If you need the utility of testing cartridges it's an appropriate option if you can get a good price, but otherwise I can't think of a single selling point this has over the myriad of other portable emulators. Remember even though it takes cartridges, this is software emulation the same as Miyoo, Anbernic, Retroid, etc...So don't be fooled by thinking the gameplay will be better because it takes cartridges. That screen was already outdated years ago and they pinched pennies with no RGB amp to use a much better video signal.
@ecmyersvids Жыл бұрын
It's not emulation though. This is a "system on a chip" hardware clone, not software-based.
