The concept of this device is really cool while also leaving a smaller footprint on your already more-than-likely crowed game setup lol. I do think it was a HUGE missed opportunity by not adding RGB or HDMI to this system though. Since the board is custom designed yet occupied by genuine chipsets they could have easily added RGB functionality by adding a couple more chips and a SNES multi video out port to the back. It probably would've made the entire package a bit more expensive, but you're already paying over $200 for one of these things so an extra $50 or so wouldn't have made much a difference.

I completely, one hundred percent, agree with you. IMHO; This product comes across as a high dollar, "value added" NES console, but the most important "value" component was not "added". Still, it is a nicely crafted and overall a clean looking unit, however for the $220.00-plus price tag, it really needs to have HDMI connectivity in my mind, to justify its premium price. Just my $0.02...

I like this new NES clone, it’s kind of cool. I bought an original NES from my friend and I love playing it, however as much as I love it, the games are slowly becoming harder to play on it, no matter how many times I clean them out with alcohol, they’re slowly starting to become harder to play on it. Today I bought the Retron 5, as it plays so many cartridges, and the cool thing about it is it plays Gameboy games on your tv. I can’t wait to hook it up. I’m keeping my original NES for nostalgia reasons and just in case the new system doesn’t work for some reason.

I'd argue that the NSO service is another good (albeit limited) way of playing NES games. Especially if you have a the official wireless controllers or the 8BitDo N30 (like I have). After all, it introduced me to some hidden games such as Nightshade and Fire & Ice. That being said, it's awesome to see something like this out in the wild and even more awesome to see the NES get some love in 2023. It's truly a goated system.

Probably the biggest turn off is the composite video. If it were HDMI, that would be a better selling point in my opinion but it is nice that we have so many options to play retro games. Just like I love the look and size of the Retron HD but I wish it was full 1080p and not just 720p.

I doubt there will be an N64 mini. Apart from mario64 and mariocart all the best games were by developers like rare who won't be able to licence their games to Nintendo at this point. There really aren't many must have and fondly remembered games , I'm betting they just couldn't get enough of the good ones to make it attractive to consumers. Add to that it didn't sell very well compared to the competition so the market is much smaller. Also, the graphics have aged very badly. The SNES,pc engine, neogeo and megadrive sprite based gfx are almost timeless but early 3d just looks horrible nowadays, especially on modern TV's. The emulation hardware will be more expensive and the software will be tricky to get 100%. So no, I don't think it will happen anytime soon.

Awesome project! The composite video looks amazing and because it uses real chips it is superior to even the MiSTer in that regard. Giving it some design thoughts: might be advantageous to put the cartridge port at the back but with a 90 degree socket. That way the cartridge would lay on top. An hdmi micro/mini socket could also fit on the back panel. That would make this thing perfect IMO.

No man, you did good. I'm in the exact same boat. At the end of the day I *know* this would end up on a shelf or in its box. The MiSTer is 100% as good as this, and as it already has RGB / HDMI it's already better. The only thing you're "missing out" on is using real carts, but lets be honest - we're just going to use an Everdrive N8 anyway haha. I honestly don't know who this is for. The ONLY appeal is the real CPU/GPU, as the output is laughably composite only. If there's RGB down the line, it'll cost a pretty penny for sure and even then it'll only be catching up to the MiSTer. Don't regret not buying this.

@andrewlwatts Жыл бұрын
RGB (actually component) separates the video signal into three channels - Y (Luma), Pr (Red - Y), and Pb (Blue - Y), while Composite composes them into a single signal. RGB/component gives you better color reproduction than composite and stops some visual artifacts like dot crawl. There's also S-Video (not an option here) that separates the signal into two channels - Chroma (color) and Luma (brightness) that sits in between in video quality.
