Story Of Madmaheshwar- The Panch Kedar pilgrimage is Madhyamaheshwar (also known as Madmaheshwar), located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. According to Hindu mythology, the story of Madhyamaheshwar is linked to the Pandavas from the Mahabharata.
After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought absolution for the sins of killing their relatives. They were advised to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva. However, Shiva, unhappy with the bloodshed and deception during the war, avoided the Pandavas by transforming himself into a bull (Nandi) and hiding in the Garhwal region.
The Pandavas continued their search for Shiva, and Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, recognized him in the form of a bull at Guptakashi. The bull then dived into the earth, and different parts of Shiva's body appeared at different places. It is believed that Shiva’s navel surfaced at Madhyamaheshwar, making this place sacred.
The temple of Madhyamaheshwar is thus dedicated to the navel (nabhi) of Lord Shiva. The journey to reach Madhyamaheshwar is also considered challenging, involving a trek through scenic but rugged Himalayan terrain, which is part of what makes the pilgrimage so revered.
