Madness are of course rightly known as the Nutty Boys and their catalogue is massively upbeat and fun. However, this doesn't mean that they can't produce songs with a different tone and message - a great example is "One Better Day" which tells the tale of two people who have fallen on hard times. The official video is quite sad but without sacrificing the band's usual humour.

Ahh someone that knows em. Yes the nutty boys. Played in the Dublin in Camden. Even did their first single there. In 1982 madness was all every kif from. Bogner to Dundee to Norwich to Newport wanted to here. They were a bigger influence on style and music than the police or specials or Bob Marley or the exploited. Madness were the best thing ever in 1982

My all-time favourite single. Madness have made a lot of songs with serious topics: Grey Day (depression), Cardiac Arrest (yes, that), One Better Day (homelessness), House of Fun (for all its jollity, it's about a nervous kid buying condoms for the first time), Embarrassment (bringing 'shame' to the family for a mixed race relationship), and Razor Blade Alley (contracting STD/STI from a prostitute) - just to name a few!

I bought this on 45rpm EP when it was released. I learnt the lyrics ~40 years ago and still remember them all. lol I love the Yiddish style violins towards the end.

Love this band! Yes, the Nutty Boys rule! I wish they came in concert in the US....they were at Coachella in California a few years back and they loved them.

I saw Madness in concert last year and they are still a great night out. They were supported by another band from that era that you might enjoy, Squeeze. Try Up The Junction, Cool For Cats or Tempted.

I've seen THE SPECIALS twice and THE SELECTOR PAULINE BLACK signed my CDs to my then one year old son Strummer clash now 16 year's old Bad Manners Stranger Cole The SKATALITES The AGGROLITES The Beat are all ska band's that I've managed to cross off my bucket list of band's to see before they bury me 12 feet under ground!!! @@hanierfamily yep the Dandy Livingstone original is great , but I think the Specials had a little more bite to it, SKA in Britain in the late 70's revival fused with punk and had a bit more punch from the 60's and early 70's....my dad got into SKA and Reggae when the likes of Dandy came to the UK ...is SKA big in the US at all?

Why don't you try something from their post 1992 works. We are London, from the liberty of Norton foliate. Or can't touch us now, from the album of the same name. Followed Madness for decades, since conception. Night Boat to Ciaro is a track they finish their gigs with these days, a wilder very early days track which was more furious, like embarrassment, one step beyond etc..

That's why madness are still touring because they are excellent musicians and not afraid to change. Just look at Gene Vincent compared to Elvis. Both good musicians but Elvis changed to suit the times. Unfortunately when Gene played the uk he got ripped off.
