I get a sense of connection with this series myself, as a veteran whose MOS was artillery observer. Trust me, in combat, 600 seconds is an eternity for backup, especially given the numbers against her. And mind you, this fight happens before she's OP, she's using a standard operating computational jewel. Tanya is sociopathic, and is pragmatic to her core. It's what caused her to rise the corporate ranks, but also what caused her death. If God exists, this Being X doesn't sound like one. Not omnipotent, complaining about people's lack of faith in a system they supposedly created, complaining about being overworked, etc etc. Not the sound of an all-knowing, omnipotent being. Was it dumb for him to mock and trash talk possibly God? Sure. But Being X has some qualities that sound either petty or fallible. A running theme throughout the series is Tanya actually trying to impress her superiors enough to get an easy job, but doing too well of a job, and so she's given more frontline responsibilities. And yes, when I saw this show when it aired, I didn't realize it was an Isekai until episode 2. As soon as "Being X" was talking about reincarnation, I went "oh damn.... this is Tanya!"
@Djorgal

Yeah, lots of people reacts with surprise that even when "God" appears in front of Tanya, she doesn't believe. I think it's reasonable to doubt it. Sure, it's supernatural and it pretends to be God, but it doesn't make it so. And even though Tanya may be evil, this Being X is morally reprehensible as well. For some reason, it appears that it needs faith and is willing to extort it, so I'm left wondering if that self-proclaimed God is worthy of worship.

So it's never explained in the anime version, but the laugh here at 10:33 actually comes from combat drugs (that was a common thing back then in our world during world war for German soldiers as well) that she just used after receiving the order of not retreating. She's too young /small in body for the drug dosage so they have a pretty heavy side effect on her personality during use. She may be a lot of things, but she isn't a warmonger or a complete psycho that laugh at the idea of fighting an enemy bataillon.
@willpina

It's not explained because it isn't part of the Anime, it is part of the LN. The Anime is an adaptation, not a transcript of the novels. Sonzai Ekusu is also quite different from the LN, there are a lot of parts that were omitted for simplification and also to make them more appealing to general audiences.

People are so quick to label Tanya evil, it's really sad but the mistranslation of the Title really didn't help. Fact is she is a true Lawful and rational character, she doesn't go out of her way to commit evil, but follows the rules to a T. As for kurst and harald, they were useless insubordinate soldiers that said they're only choice was victory or death. So she sent them to the pillbox to die and got 2 other soldiers out of the pillbox that survived in stead.

It isn't explained at all in the anime but there are a number of spells mages use in combat. In ep 1 when she climbed to 10k m in the air she was using a spell that created oxygen for her to breathe and in ep 2 when she was about to engage the enemy she used a spell that created an effect similar to the various hard drugs soldiers used in WW1 made them rather fearsome and fearless in combat.

a few details the anime never gets into but actually applies to this world a bit... no.1 Tanya isn't actually all that "strong" in magic. there are people in this world who are freaking magical monsters. Tonya herself has one defining feature to her magic which is she is insanely efficient in her magical power usage. One of the things that constantly awes those around her is how much she can get done with the little bits of magic she can squeeze out of herself. Tonya, recognizing her shortcomings does a lot of magical exercises to increase her control over magic and expand her magical capacity. to some extent it works, and while she remains at best an average mage for magical "strength" she does gain a tremendous amount of magical capacity/endurance which combined with her extreme efficiency in casting magic makes her nearly unparallel in magical endurance. it was her magical capacity/endurance that caught the eye of the scientist at the end of this episode. no.2 the computational jewels (the thing that cracked and blew up) are a magical/mechanical technology that has some basic features. they store magic spells as a formula, allowing a mage to cast them quickly, assisting the mage in controlling those magic spells, and to a degree strengthening those spells over what the mage normally could perform. The mages don't "need" the jewels to cast magic, but they make a lot of things easier and more convenient, especially in battle where every moment counts and you might need to cast magic while injured, or desperate. Every nation has different techs and philosophies on how those jewels should work and perform. And on the whole, the more complex the jewel the more spells and better efficiency you can use them at (or even faster you can cast them). Imperial (German/ Tanya's nation) Jewels are renowned for their complexity, meaning imperial mages often are more flexible in combat with a wider range of spells they can use, and needing less magic to use them. That said, imperial jewels don't have the highest output of raw power, due to the complexity they're limited somewhat on the strength of the spells you can create. Soviet jewels on the other hand are renowned for thier brutish efficiency, they can only store a few spells but they focus on strengthening them greatly, meaning of course soviet mages are troublesome to deal with due to the fact they can just brute force their way through. there is more worldbuilding the anime sort of glazes over but those concepts haven't been introduced yet, so i'll not cover it lest i start spoiling. As for the world setting, this is obviously an alternate world, where WW1 didn't happen. This world closely resembles pre-WW1 with the system of alliances and the like. and the war and tech that develop all happens in the 1920s and 30s, so the tech more closely resembles the military tech of the in between era between ww1 and ww2. the "Empire" which Tonya is a part of is of course closely analogous with pre WW1 Germany. These aren't Nazis. As for Tonya, and the controversy with the title. People often object to the English title of the anime due to the fact Tonya is essentially an ultra capitalist Ayn Rand "enlightened self interest" devote. However just because she's a machine of cold hard logic, doesn't mean she's not morally reprehensible. She has no emotional or psychological issue with killing others, zero actual empathy for others, and extremely low affect to the pain and suffering of others, in essence she's a psychopath. A functional and rational psychopath, who'd clearly be more on the lawful evil side of a DND alignment chart, but definitely a psychopath. in an ethical sense she truly is "evil" or at the most charitable, "selfish". The word evil also has other connotations, but one thing I'd like to point out. She lacks any faith. In a traditional sense, faithless people are often called "evil" by the faithful. so I don't think there is anything wrong with the English title of this anime.

Yes! I see people trying to resume Tanya's character as only a pragmatic individual but in reality she is a very cold, selfish and manipulator person. She will do whatever it takes to achieve her goals, lawfully if she can... If she can't do that, she will bend the rules to make her action seem right. She is your average psycho unable to form emotional connection with the people around her.

The problem is it misleads normies. Tanya is actually a complex character and she does develop attachment to her men (at least in the anime) she does want peace. She has no moral problems with killing but she doesn't like it because it's unproductive. In a stable, peaceful society she would be a company CEO or politician not a soldier. When people hear evil, most people imagine Jack the ripper, or drug lords or something similar not a character like Tanya.

@@markcarpenter6020 Yes but that doesn't mean she isn't evil. One example of that is the attack on the city the imperial army did using tactics created by Tanya using an awful plan to not be recognized as a war crime. That killed a lot of civilians. Tanya may want peace but that isn't for the good of humanity, it is entirely for a selfish reason so that way she will have a longer life and get revenge on Being X. She cares about her men because they're useful to her, or else she will do what she did to Harold and his friend. I love Tanya's character but people need to stop trying to change reality, the anime version of Tanya is evil.

10:49 Insanity indeed. The whole show is insane. That is what makes it so entertaining to me. One of best shows to watch reactions. Tanya in this episode was 9 years old and the cute and childish voice from the end of episode is how Tanya actually sounds. But on battlefield she deepens her voice to sound like more of authority. It all shows the ability of her voice actress Aoi Yuuki.

I feel like the characterization of Tanya is summarized in this episode, with an oft-ignored line, "war is an unproductive, and therefore evil, act." Tanya is not evil, nor is she insane. She's just operating on a blue-and-orange morality system, rather than a black-and-white one. She basically never lies, because lying is inherently unproductive compared to selective truth-telling or even accidental over-truth-telling. Not because lying is emotionally wrong, but because it creates inefficiencies in the system it is a bad thing to do.

The salaryman that would become Tanya did not decide to fire the slacker. That decision came from the higher ups and the saleryman only had the job to convey this to the person in question. Sure proto-Tanya didn't have any empathy for the guy, but he was just the messenger. Something that the anime either failed to mention or straight up changed is the reason for Tanya's insanity here. In this world mages have various ways in which they can manipulate their own body, including magic that boosts their physical abilities (which explains how she could beat up the other soldier more than twice her size), reaction times, suppressing fear and more. When Tanya was all alone and supposed to hold of an entire unit of mages, she panicked from fear, so she used spells to suppress her fear and dampen her ability to feel pain... but because of her panic, she accidentally overdid it. So she essentially overdosed on anti-fear and anti-pain magic, and ended up totally out of her mind. This is not her "real" self coming through: This is her under a shitload of the mind-altering effects. The anime also forewent showing Tanya getting seriously injured even before the self destruct. In novel and manga, the enemy mages didn't miss most of their shots. They hit her repeatedly, to the point that she had to shrink her defensive shell to only her vital organs, leading to her legs and arms being riddled with bullet holes. Also unlike in the anime, in the paper mediums, mages can fly - albeit not very well - with only their own magic, even without any item like computation orbs or flight gear, which explain how Tanya was able to survive falling from such height, after she blew up her computation orb.

Fun fact as far as I know the very first isekai was actually an American cartoon. In the 1980s dungeons and dragons made a cartoon about a group of kids elementary school to high school age that get transported into another world and given magical weapons as they search for a way home. Lol I grew up watching that and they recently officially made the big bad from that cartoon an official DnD character in the new rules so I remembered it.

In one book, a dark elf ends up in World War 2) Of all the anime in this genre, this is perhaps the best. Who would I compare Tatyana with (by the way, her name is like the daughter of the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas 2, I even have a Nikolaev ruble, left over from my great-grandfather, who fought “for the Tsar, for the homeland, for the faith” in the First World War). Considering that the revolution happened before World War I (in this alternative history), Tanya is probably one of the White Guards who left for the West after the Civil War. I think Tatyana have a lot in common with Commirar Cain from Warhammer 40,000). He will remember the moment that he was depicted on propaganda posters with a bolt pistol. Although he always carried a laser pistol. As they say, “I just wanted to save my head and then it started.”
