Speaking as a fan of 35 years, this tune is one of the shining lights of their work.. Suggs was wrong when he said Mad Not Mad was a polished turd. It was their last great album as far as I'm concerned.

upon first listen i really didn’t like this album, but after listening to it some more, especially after having a bit of a tumble with my overall mood, i understand it and enjoy it a lot more, without discarding it just because of how downbeat it is still don’t like sweetest girl though.. might just be me but that single spot was wasted

Personally, for me, Norton Folgate was the one of the weakest of Madness's albums with the possible exception of "The Madness"). In fact, it was the only one that I didn't like. I very much liked "Mad, not mad".

Listening to it now. Good album, sort of bland sound mix and unfortunately a few of the songs don't really rise up above the bland energy. Madness definitely has better albums before and after. This one's an excellent track. Best song on the album is a cover: Sweetest Girl. They sound a bit tired. Effects of the album/tour/album/tour grind showing up here? imho
